It was a winter afternn when, rushing t attend the final shw f my art schl degree, I caught the heel f my bt n the edge f a pavement. Suddenly, I was flying thrugh the air. If the past tw years studying phtgraphy had taught me anything, it was an appreciatin f hw things can change in a thusandth f a secnd. Light, shadw, clurs, all are in a cnstant state f flux (不断的变动)— as is life. And since crash-landing nt my left shulder, I have been living thrugh the truth f this wisdm.
That day, dctrs diagnsed a cracked bne. It was nly the next mrning when, instinctively, I tried t capture sme spectacular sunlight streaming int my kitchen, that I had t face the harsh reality: I culd n lnger lift my camera, let alne use it. Later that week, a hspital appintment cnfirmed my wrst fear — the arm needed ttal rest.
Sn, I became cantankerus and impatient. I culdn't travel, I culdn’t g anywhere much. Surfing nline, I came acrss the cncept f gratitude interventins and their rle in bsting md and wellbeing. A Califrnian psychlgist, Snja Lyubmirsky, has pineered research int using a daily phtgraphy practice as a tl fr enhanced gratitude. Her instructins are simple, but nt necessarily easy. Take phtgraphs thrughut the day f things that are central t wh yu are. Take at least five phts a day. Initially, it felt like a demanding task. But reading hw participants assigned t the gratitude interventins had experienced enhanced psitive emtins, I decided t persevere.
Pain frced me t slw dwn, because capturing a single iPhne pht was painful. And, yet, the struggle t find anything t feel grateful abut, and then t recrd it, started t dramatically imprve bth my md and my images. I began t phtgraph the mst bring details f my days, frm my breakfast cup t a red pepper reflected in the windw. Despite everything, I fund I culd find magic in the rdinary. "Life seems repetitive and bring when yu dn't ntice the uniqueness f each mment and the cnstant subtle changes that are ging n all arund yu, " write Andy Karr in a wnderful bk n phtgraphy. I agree, but dn't just take my wrd fr it — experience it fr yurself.

That peple ften experience truble sleeping in a different bed in unfamiliar surrundings is a phenmenn knwn as the “first-night” effect. If a persn stays in the same rm the fllwing night, they tend t sleep mre sundly. Yuka Sasaki and her clleagues at Brwn University set ut t investigate the rigins f this effect.
Dr. Sasaki knew the first-night effect prbably has smething t d with hw humans evlved. The puzzle was what benefit wuld be gained frm it since perfrmance might be affected the fllwing day. She als knew frm previus wrk cnducted n birds and dlphins that these animals put half f their brains t sleep at a time s that they can rest while remaining alert enugh t avid predatrs. This led her t wnder if peple might be ding the same thing. T take a clser lk, her team studied 35 healthy peple as they slept in the unfamiliar envirnment f the university’s Department f Psychlgical Sciences. The participants each slept in the department fr tw nights and were carefully mnitred with techniques that lked at the activity f their brains. Dr. Sasaki fund, as expected, the participants slept less well n their first night than they did n their secnd, taking mre than twice as lng t fall asleep and sleeping less verall. During deep sleep, the participants’ brains behaved in a similar manner seen in birds and dlphins. On the first night nly, the left hemispheres f their brains did nt sleep nearly as deeply as their right hemispheres did.
Curius if the left hemispheres were indeed remaining awake t prcess infrmatin detected in the surrunding envirnment, Dr. Sasaki re-ran the experiment while presenting the sleeping participants with a mix f regularly timed beeps (蜂鸣声) f the same tne and irregular beeps f a different tne during the night. She wrked ut that, if the left hemisphere was staying alert t keep guard in a strange envirnment, then it wuld react t the irregular beeps by stirring peple frm sleep and wuld ignre the regularly timed nes. This is precisely what she fund.
28. What did researchers find puzzling abut the first-night effect?
A. T what extent it can truble peple. C. What circumstances may trigger it.
B. What rle it has played in evlutin. D. In what way it can be beneficial.
29. What d we learn abut Dr. Yuka Sasaki ding her research?
A. She fund birds and dlphins remain alert while asleep.
B. She fund birds and dlphins sleep in much the same way.
C. She gt sme idea frm previus studies n birds and dlphins
D. She cnducted studies n birds’ and dlphins’ sleeping patterns.
30. What did Dr. Sasaki d when re-running her experiment?
A. She analyzed the negative effect f irregular tnes n brains.
B. She recrded participants’ adaptatin t changed envirnment.
C. She expsed her participants t tw different stimuli.
D. She cmpared the respnses f different participants.
31. What did Dr. Sasaki find abut the participants in her experiment?
A. They tended t enjy certain tnes mre than thers.
B. They tended t perceive irregular beeps as a threat.
C. They felt sleepy when expsed t regular beeps.
D. They differed in their tlerance f irregular tnes.

Back in 1964, in his bk Games Peple Play, psychiatrist Eric Berne described a pattern f cnversatin he called "Why Dn't Yu — Yes But", which remains ne f the mst annying aspects f everyday scial life. The persn adpting the strategy is usually a chrnic cmplainer. Smething is terrible abut their relatinship, jb, r ther situatin, and they cmplain abut it endlessly, but find sme excuse t dismiss any slutin that's prpsed. The reasn, f curse, is that n sme level they dn't want a slutin; they want t be validated in their psitin that the wrld is ut t get them. If they can "win" the game — dismissing every suggestin until interlcutrs(对话者) gives up in annyance — they get t feel pleasurably righteus(正当的) in their anger and excused frm any bligatin t change.
Part f the truble here is the s-called respnsibility/fault fallacy(谬误).When yu're feeling hard dne by — taken fr granted by yur partner, say, r bliged t wrk fr a stupid bss — it's easy t becme attached t the psitin that it's nt yur jb t address the matter, and that ding s wuld be an admissin f fault. But there's a cnfusin here. Fr example, if I were t discver a newbrn at my frnt dr, it wuldn't be my fault, but it mst certainly wuld be my respnsibility. There wuld be chices t make, and n pssibility f aviding them, since trying t ignre the matter wuld be a chice. The pint is that what ges fr the baby n the drstep is true in all cases:even if the ther persn is 100% in the wrng, there's nthing t be gained, lng-term, frm using this as a justificatin t evade respnsibility.
Shuld yu find yurself n the receiving end f this kind f cmplaining, there's a clever way t shut it dwn — which is t agree with it. Psychtherapist Lri Gttlieb describes this as "ver-validatin". Fr ne thing, yu'll be spared further cmplaining, since the ther persn's mtivatin was t cnfirm her beliefs, and nw yu're cnfirming them. But fr anther, as Gttlieb ntes, peple cnfrnted with ver-validatin ften hear their cmplaints afresh and start arguing back. The cncept that they're utterly pwerless suddenly seems unrealistic, nt t mentin rather annying — s they're prmpted instead t generate ideas abut hw they might change things.
"And then, smetimes, smething magical might happen, " Gtlieb writes. The ther persn "might realize she's nt as trapped as yu are saying she is, r as she feels. " Aviding respnsibility feels cmfrtable, but turns ut t be a prisn;whereas assuming respnsibility feels unpleasant, but ends up being freeing.
32.What is the characteristic f a chrnic cmplainer,accrding t Eric Berne?
A. They are angry abut their ill treatment and feel bitter twards whever tries t help.
B. They are habitually unhappy and endlessly find fault with peple arund them.
C. They cnstantly dismiss thers' prpsals while taking n respnsibility fr dealing with the prblem.
D. They lack the basic skills required fr successful cnversatins with thers.
33.What des the authr try t illustrate with the example f the newbrn n ne's drstep?
A. Peple tend t think that ne shuld nt be held respnsible fr thers' mistakes.
B. It is easy t becme attached t the psitin f verlking ne's wn fault.
C. Peple are ften at a lss when cnfrnted with a number f chices.
D. A distinctin shuld be drawn between respnsibility and fault.
34.What des the authr advise peple t d t chrnic cmplainers?
A. Stp them frm ging further by agreeing with them.
B. Listen t their cmplaints attentively and sympathetically.
C. Ask them t validate their beliefs with further evidence.
D. Persuade them t clarify the cnfusin they caused.
35.Which f the fllwing is the best title fr the passage?
A. What is the respnsibility/fault fallacy fr chrnic cmplainers?
B. Hw can yu avid dangerus traps in everyday scial life?
C. Wh are chrnic cmplainers and hw t deal with them?
D. Why shuld we stp being a chrnic cmplainer and assume respnsibility?
