Smetimes it seems anti-pllutin and recycling effrts are a lng rad t nwhere. That’s hw engineer Tby McCartney felt until visiting India in 2016. While n the trip, he wrked with a grup filling hles n rads by cmbining waste plastics, diesel (柴油) fuel, and fire. Plastic has been used t cnstruct rads in India since the turn f the century—and McCartney realized the idea culd be applied t rad cnstructin in ther cuntries, “t slve tw wrld prblems: plastic waste, and n the ther side the pr quality f rads we have t drive n tday.”
Upn returning hme t Sctland, he started experimenting, melting dwn varius cmbinatins f cnsumer plastics n his kitchen stve (炉子). After ging thrugh ver 500 different cmbinatins f waste plastics, he fund materials that wrked and funded a cmpany named MacRebur t start building their plastic-imprved rads.
In MacRebur, waste plastics are brken dwn int small pieces and replace 20% f the il-based bitumen (沥青) that is used n traditinal rads. Mre imprtantly, the mixed material is up t 60% strnger, up t three times lnger-lasting, and has huge envirnmental benefits. Accrding t McCartney, each mile f rad laid with his cmpany’s prduct uses almst 1.2 millin single-use plastic bags r 80,000 plastic bttles.
McCartney is sure that plastics in rads will nt wash back int ur rivers and ceans when it rains. Since the plastic is safely sandwiched between stne and bitumen, it can’t easily reenter the envirnment. “All ur plastics are heated t 180℃,” says McCartney. “They then fully calesce with the remaining bitumen in the rad, s there is n micr-plastic present in any f ur rads.”
“At the end f the day plastic is a great prduct” McCartney says. “It lasts lng, which is a prblem if it’s a waste prduct, but nt a prblem if we want it t last.”

Imagine yu’re lking at yur cmpany-issued smartphne and yu ntice an e-mail frmLinkedIn: “These cmpanies are lking fr prfessinals like yu!” Yu aren’t necessarily searching fr a jb, but yu’re always pen t pprtunities, s ut f curisity, yu click n the link. A few minutes later, yur bss appears at yur desk. “We’ve nticed that yu’re spending mre time n LinkedIn lately, s I wanted t talk with yu abut yur career and whether yu’re happy here,” she says. It’s an awkward scene. Emplyee turnver has always been expensive fr cmpanies, but in many industries the cst f lsing gd wrkers is rising, wing t tight labr (劳动力) markets. Thus cmpanies are strengthening their effrts t predict which wrkers are at high risk f leaving s that managers can try t stp them. Methds range frm electrnic mnitr t examining emplyees’ scial media activities.
Sme f this wrk may be a reasn t cause emplyees t quit. In general, peple leave their jbs because they dn’t see pprtunities fr prmtin r grwth, r are ffered a higher pay. These reasns have held steady fr years.
New research cnducted by CEB, a Washingtn-based technlgy cmpany, suggests that what really affects wrkers is their sense f hw they’re ding cmpared with ther peple in their grup, r with where they thught they shuld be at a certain pint in life.
Sme cmpanies, like Credit Suisse, deal with emplyees wh might quit in a specific way: call these emplyees t tell them abut jb vacancies (空缺) within the cmpany. In 2023, Credit Suisse lwered the number f emplyees leaving by 1% and mved 300 emplyees, many f whm might therwise have left, int new psitins. Credit Suisse estimates that it saved $75 millin in rehiring and training csts.
Frward-thinking interventin is a better way t deal with emplyees’ wandering eyes than waiting fr smene t get an ffer and then making a cunterffer.
    12. What is LinkedIn accrding t the text?
    A. A well-knwn pst ffice.B. An entertainment website.
    C. A ppular nline celebrity.D. A prfessinal scial netwrk.
    13. What des the authr want t stress in Paragraph 2?
    A. What the result f lsing utstanding wrkers is.
    B. Where emplyees can land a mre satisfying jb.
    C. Whether cmpany rules becme stricter than befre.
    D. Why cmpanies attempt t identify ptential quitters.
    14. Which f the fllwing may lead t wrkers leaving their jbs accrding t CEB?
    A. Limited interactin in the grup.B. A sense f being undervalued.
    C. Pr interpersnal relatinships.D. A lack f rewarding scial life.
    15. Which may best describe the measures Credit Suisse tk?
