A study that identified buzzwrd (流行词) adjectives that culd be features f AI-written text in peer-reviewed reprts suggests that researchers are turning t ChatGPT and ther artificial intelligence (AI) tls t evaluate thers’ wrk.
Since its release in Nvember 2022, ChatGPT has been used t write a number f scientific papers, in sme cases even being listed as an authr. Out f mre than 1,600 scientists wh respnded t a 2023 Nature survey, nearly 30% said they had used generative AI t write papers and arund 15% said they had used it fr their wn literature reviews and t write grant (拨款) applicatins.
The authrs f the study, psted n the arXiv preprint server n 11 March, examined the extent t which AI chatbts culd have mdified the peer reviews f cnference prceedings submitted t fur majr cmputer science meetings since the release f ChatGPT.
Their analysis suggests that up t 17% f the peer-reviewed reprts have been substantially adjusted by chatbts — althugh it’s unclear whether researchers used the tls t cnstruct reviews r just t edit and imprve written drafts.
The idea f chatbts writing referee reprts fr unpublished wrk is “very shcking” given that the tls ften generate misleading r invented infrmatin, says Debra Weber-Wulff, a cmputer scientist at the HTW Berlin — University f Applied Sciences in Germany. “It’s the expectatin that a human researcher lks at it,” she adds. “AI systems ‘hallucinate (产生幻觉)’, and we can’t knw when they’re hallucinating and when they’re nt.”
