T bring the Olympic spirit t develping natins in the late 1990s, the Olympic Cmmittee allwed a small number f “wild card” athletes t jin the Games. Digital reading seems t have a great advantage ver print because it is paperless, s it saves trees and transprt. Teenagers ften have a bad reputatin, with parents saying they struggle t get thrugh t them, and get cnfused by teenage slang. But many f the cmmn beliefs abut teenagers are myths. They aren’t all lazy and rude, as a new reprt suggests.
A study f 184 teens has shwn hw their adlescent friendships prepare them fr parenting. The grup was fllwed fr ver 30 years, starting frm the age f 13. Each year, grup members selected their clsest friend t take part in the study with them. Attending a lab in their chsen pairs, the friend asked fr advice n a prblem, and respnses were scred in relatin t fur cre aspects f empathy (同情): emtinal supprt, instrumental supprt, emtinal engagement, and interpretatin f their friend’s prblem.
When members f the grup began having children, they were asked different questins relating t their parenting style. This came in the frm f 12 hypthetical (假设的) situatins where their child expressed a negative emtin, and they said hw they’d respnd. Their respnses were labelled either supprtive r nn-supprtive. The results shwed ne imprtant crrelatin—thse wh had been mre empathetic teens, made mre supprtive parents.
The study als explred hw much empathy participants received frm their wn parents. Unsurprisingly, thse with emtinally supprtive parents appeared naturally mre empathetic twards their friends, cntinuing t emulate their upbringings int adulthd.
Althugh the teens with unsupprtive parents smetimes became harsh parents, this wasn’t always the case. Sme were able t break cycles f pr empathy, and despite difficult upbringings, were still able t demnstrate keen empathy in their adlescent friendships.
Dr. Jessica A. Stern, the study authr, cncludes “Adults ften underestimate the imprtance f teens being able t spend time with their friends. But experiences in clse, supprtive friendships as a teenager are actually really imprtant fr healthy develpment.
