Animal rights grups say that deer-related accidents are actually caused by hunters wh scare the deer nt rads. While that claim is hard t cnfirm, this ne isn’t: the number f deer-related car accidents can’t cmpare with the 200 hunting-related human deaths every year. This year, my tw ldest sns asked me t sign them up fr pian lessns. Fr certain reasns, I decided it wuld als be a gd time fr me t take up the pian again, after 30 years.
As a child, I learned nt just the pian, but the cell. I played in tw rchestras and sang in the schl chir. N ne frced me t d any f it, but it wasn’t quite a free chice either. When yu are the apprval-addicted daughter f an ver-invested mther, n ne needs t apply frce. My mm and I were well matched partners in the dance f unspken expectatin and apprval-seeking. I did her frcing fr her.
Fr my mther, my musical industriusness wasn’t s much abut achievement as identity. She was American by birth, and after marrying my university prfessr father and mving t Lndn, she spent a decade wrking t be accepted int the impatient, fraught wrld f British intellectual sciety.
In this envirnment, a diligent daughter lugging a giant cell was a tiny amunt f cultural capital, a ticket t belnging. As much as anything culd, music made me int the persn my mther needed me t be, s that she culd be the persn she needed t be, in rder t escape wh she actually was.
And fr my part, althugh I never truly believed that my mther’s lve was cnditinal, I did have the suspicin that there was a perfrmance- related bnus in there.
It was flish t think that taking up the pian at the same time as my wn children wuld be emtinally uncmplicated. Or perhaps the cmplicatin was exactly why I sught it ut. Smehw, the pian lessns turn me int bth my childhd self, seeking my mther’s apprval, and int my mther herself, putting the same high expectatins n my wn children.
My mther was lucky in that I was temperamentally (性情地) suited t the rle she assigned me. My sns are nt s much s. They are rambunctius and restless, nt wired fr lengthy sessins f sitting still and reflecting well n me.
Uncnditinal lve may be at the defining heart f parenthd, but smetimes it can feel impssible t accmmdate uncnditinal lve t the wrldly practices f day-t-day parenting. The whle jb seems set up fr cnditinality: It wuld be dishnest t pretend that we have n stake in wanting ur children t reflect ur wn values and preferences.
I’m disappinted when my sns wn’t play their rle in the script I have written fr them, but deep dwn, I’m als a little thrilled. They are maddeningly, glriusly resistant t the pressure. A secret part f me is delighted by their raging demands fr full persnhd — beynd my prjectins and hpes and fears. By the life they claim.

Muntain chickadees (山雀) have sme f the strngest spacial memries in the animal kingdm. New research reveals the genes invlved and sheds light n hw a changing climate may influence the evlutin f this particular skill.
In a new study, researchers at the University f Clrad Bulder and the University f Nevada, Ren identify nearly a hundred genes assciated with the birds’ spacial memry, r ability t recall the lcatins f bjects. The paper als suggests a ptential balance may exist between having a slid lng- term memry and being able t quickly remve ld memries t frm new nes.
Taylr, the directr f CU Bulder’s Muntain Research Statin and his assciates at the University f Nevada, Ren, lead by bilgist prfessr Vladimir Pravsudv, designed a nvel technique t assess the spacial memry f wild muntain chickadees. They hung varius feeder grups in Califrnia’s Sierra Nevada muntains, each with eight seed-filled bird feeders. Each feeder has a gate equipped with a radi frequency reader capable f detecting a tag placed n chickadees by researchers. The scientists then cnfigured (设定) each gate t nly pen t specific birds, frcing the chickadees t remember which feeders wuld pen t them. Pravsudv and his team then cunted hw many times each chickadee landed n the wrng feeders befre they recalled the right ne.
Using bld samples, the CU Bulder team sequenced (测定序列) the whle genme f 162 tagged chickadees, resulting in the largest database ever cllected fr examining the genetic basis f chickade’s cgnitive ability. The team discvered 97 genes invlved in chickadee spacial learning and memry by cmparing the birds’ genmes t their perfrmance n the feeder test.
The findings culd help bilgists better understand the evlutin f spacial memry in animals, including humans. “Chickadees are impressive birds,” said Sctt Taylr. “They can remember tens f thusands f lcatins where they stre fd acrss an entire winter and a new set f thse the next winter. Their spacial memry is much mre develped than many ther birds that dn’t have t have this strategy t survive cld winters.”
28.What d we knw abut muntain chickadees’ spacial memries?
A.They are linked with a hundred relevant genes.B.They maintain a gd balance in lcating bjects.
C.They are cnsidered pwerful in the animal wrld.D.They might accunt fr the slw change f climate.
29.What can a radi frequency reader d in the test?
A.Lwer the errr rate f the chickadees.B.Cunt the times each chickadee failed.
C.Cllect the fd infrmatin f a feeder.D.Identify the chickadee landing n a feeder.
30.What des paragraph 4 fcus n abut the study?
A.Bld sampling.B.Genes invlved.
C.Ability cmparing.D.Data gathered.
31.What des Sctt Taylr imply in the last paragraph?
A.Chickadees pssess amazing evlutinary capability.
B.Many ther birds shuld imprve their spacial memry.
C.Fd strage is vital t the survival f animals in winter.
D.Chickadees’ spacial memry carries them thrugh winter.

A study led by UC Riverside (UCR) atmspheric scientists predicts that unchecked carbn emissins will frce trpical rains t shift nrthward in the cming decades, which wuld prfundly impact the regins near the Earth's equatr.
The nrthward rain shift is caused by cmplex atmspheric changes. These changes are driven by carbn emissins, which in turn influence the frmatin f trpical cnvergence (汇集) znes. Thse znes are essentially atmspheric engines that drive abut a third f the wrld’s rainfall, which Antny P. Thmas, a prfessr f climate change and sustainability at UCR reprted in a paper published in the jurnal Nature Climate Change.
Trpical regins n either side the equatr, such as central African natins, nrthern Suth America, and Pacific island states wuld be the mst affected. Majr crps in these regins include cffee, cca, palm il, bananas, sugarcane, tea, manges, and pineapples.
Trpical rainfrests can have as much as 14 feet f rain a year. “The rainfall change is enrmus,” Antny said. “It's a very heavy rainfall regin. S, a small shift will cause big changes in the ecnmy f the scieties. It will affect many regins.”
Antny and his clleagues used advanced cmputer mdels t predict the atmspheric influence f carbn dixide emissins frm cntinued burning f fssil fuels and ther surces.” This climate mdel included many cmpnents f the atmsphere, cean, sea ice, and land. All these cmpnents are interacting with each ther,” he said. “Basically, we try t simulate the real wrld. 【答案】36.F 37.E 38.G 39.D 40.A
36.根据空前句“Maybe yu are prbably getting an earful (训斥) frm yur inner vice.(也许你可能听到了内心训斥的声音)”提到你可能从内心的声音中听到了长时间的数落;空后“Here are several ways t change yur self- talk script and t use yur inner vices t perfrm better.(这里有几个方法来改变你的自我对话脚本,用你内心的声音来表现得更好。)” F项中的“ negative cmments in yur head”与空前句中的“ an earful frm yur inner vice”相呼应,且其中的“ make it difficult fr yu t succeed”与空后句中的“ perfrm better”相呼应。 因此,F选项“Often, negative cmments in yur head make it difficult fr yu t succeed(通常,你头脑中的负面评论会让你很难成功)”衔接上下文。故选F。
37.根据后文“And when yur inner vices start t fill with wrds f frustratin and discuragement, pause the cnversatin as yu cnsider ways t change it.(当你内心的声音开始充满沮丧和沮丧时,暂停谈话,考虑改变它的方法)”中提取的关系词“And”可知,设空处与空后句构成并列关系。空前句“In high- pressure situatins, self- talk is ften critical. Instead f thinking deliberately and lgically, ur inner vices are caused by emtin. E选项“S yur first step is t listen critically t what yu are saying t yurself(因此,你的第一步是批判性地倾听你对自己说的话)”符合语境。故选E。
38.根据空前内容“One effective way t manage stress is t create psychlgical distance. This can be achieved by using secnd- r third- persn prnuns when referring t the situatin. Asking yurself,“ Why are yu feeling s stressed?” is ne way t create the psychlgical distance yu need t regulate emtin.(管理压力的一个有效方法是创造心理距离。这可以通过使用第二人称或第三人称代词来实现。问自己:“为什么你感到这么有压力?”是一种创造心理距离的方法,你需要这种距离来调节情绪)”提到应对压力的一个有效方法是创造心理距离,并举例说明“问自己‘为什么你感到压力如此之大?’”是一种创造调节情绪所需的心理距离的方法。因此,设空处位于段尾,应能承接上文,与空前句提到的创造心理距离的方法相关,G选项“This way yu might find yur task an interesting challenge instead f a threat(这样你会发现你的任务是一个有趣的挑战而不是威胁)”说明了使用该方法的好处,且其中的“ This way”指代的正是空前句中的“Asking yurself, “Why are yu feeling s stressed?””。故选G。
40.根据本段内容“Demeaning r negative self- talk is nly ging t increase yur stress and hld yu back. Instead, speak cmpassinately t yurself — just as yu wuld t a friend. Recreate negative messages t include psitive cntent. “I am nt gd at this.” can be changed t“ Relax. Yu are prepared fr this.” “I dn’t knw what t say.” can be replaced by“ Remember t smile and ask gd questins.”(贬低或消极的自言自语只会增加你的压力,阻碍你前进。相反,你应该同情地对自己说话——就像对朋友说话一样。重新创造负面信息以包含积极内容。“我不擅长这个。可以改成“放轻松。”你已经准备好了。”“我不知道该说什么。可以用“记得微笑,问好问题”来代替)”可知,本段建议人们不要进行贬低性的或消极的自我对话,而要像对待朋友那样对自己说积极的话,A选项“Treat yurself as a friend(把自己当成朋友)”能很好地概括本段主旨。故选A。
