There were years when I ignred the call f Algnquin, caught up in the busyness f life-graduate schl, and raising yung children. But as time passed, my children grew lder, and the call f Algnquin grew luder. With the supprt f my family, I finally heeded that call again, and started planning t take part in ne f ur family trips there.
My family’s expertise in the utdrs has been invaluable fr such trips. But, as the trip gt clser, my husband hurt his leg. And suddenly, I was faced with managing the first part f the trip as the nly adult. Culd I drive my daughters, alne, t Algnquin’s remte nrth bundary t meet my dad? Culd I handle the cane? Culd I carry the cane?
I had driven acrss Canada, alne, in my twenties, well befre Ggle Maps. But I feared carrying a cane. Plus, lifting it nt my shulders seemed impssible fr smene f my strength.
    高三英语 第 3 页 共 8 页
But Algnquin was calling me. I channeled the fearless independence f my yunger self. With guidance frm YuTube, I mastered the technique f lifting the cane nt my shulders. When the spring cmes, peple in Rme smetimes eat vignarla fr celebratin. Vignarla is a vegetable stew (炖菜) mixed with all things green and new. It nce marked the start f the new seasn after the hungry gap f late winter. But in a time when frzen peas are available all year rund, the dish’s amazing spring freshness n lnger means as much.
Our mdern fd system has been able t supply us with the freshness f spring all year rund, but befre refrigeratin (冷藏) and mdern methds f agriculture, even butter and eggs were seasnal fds. Hwever, hw ften d yu ever taste smething truly fresh? If yu lk clsely, yu’ll likely ntice much f the prduce at yur lcal supermarket isn’t quite as fresh as yu thught. I recently met a British farmer wh prduces salad greens. He tld me he can taste a huge difference between a leaf that is a day ld and ne that is three days ld and that, by five days, the taste is greatly dulled, despite the leaves still lking green and bright. Because f this, the average shpper is nne the wiser in regard t the freshness f prduce. The same ges fr much f the fd yu buy. The label says “fresh” but what this actually means is smething clser t “nt rtten (腐烂的).”
Our entire fd supply is based n the idea f “fresh” and “keeping things fresh” . But t keep things fresh is a kind f cheat, because smething can nly truly be cnsidered fresh when it has just been taken ut f the grund r has just been cked. The “fresh” fd and drink in ur supermarkets has ften been n a surprisingly lng jurney in the glbal cld chain befre it reaches us. Many refrigerated fds can be labeled as “fresh” even if they are weeks ld, and fruit can still be “fresh” after being irradiated (辐照) r after having received a wax cating.
It may be impssible t measure true freshness in fd, but yu knw it when yu taste it. A cuple f years ag, a friend served me a simple dish f biled ptates that were s fresh that every ther ptat I’d ever eaten seemed tasteless in my memry.
    28. What is the authr’s purpse in mentining vignarla?
    A. T talk abut a ppular Rman dish.
    B. T say that ld dishes dn’t matter nw.
    C. T shw the impact f mdern fd system.
    D. T cmplain abut using frzen peas in cking.

    29. What can we learn frm paragraph 2?
    A. Supermarkets nly sell vegetables that are truly fresh.
    B. Many cnsumers can’t tell whether the fd is fresh r nt.
    C. Supermarkets ften teach shppers hw t chse fresh prduce.
    D. Farmers can find little difference between truly fresh and “fresh” greens.
    30. Why des the authr say “t keep things fresh is a kind f cheat” in Paragraph 3?
    A. Because the fd industry ften mislabels ld fd as “fresh” .
    B. Because it’s impssible fr the mdern fd system t keep fd fresh.
    C. Because the glbal cld chain makes it difficult t track the fd freshness.
    D. Because it ften takes a lng time befre “fresh” fd reaches the lcal supermarket.
    31. Accrding t the passage, what’s the mst reliable way t tell whether fd is fresh r nt?
    A. Taste it. B. Check it. C. Smell it. D. Ck it.
    D
A Sumatran rangutan (猩猩) named Rakus has amazed researchers by treating a cheek wund with a medicinal plant. Sumatran rangutans are a critically endangered species, with nly abut 14,600 left in the wild. The primates can nly be fund in the nrthern tip f the island f Sumatra in Indnesia. Their numbers have drpped due t the widespread change f rainfrests int il palm plantatins and ther agricultural develpment. Als, despite being legally prtected, the animals are ften captured fr fd r t be kept in husehlds as status symbls. Since females give birth t just ne infant at a time every eight r nine years, their ppulatins are likely t be affected by even very lw levels f hunting.

    A. He rarely ate plants as his fd. B. He used liana t treat his wund.
    C. He has already been 35 years ld. D. He used liana t fight with anther rangutan. 33. What did Rakus d after he applied the healing juice?

    C. He tk additinal rest t assist his recvery.
    D. He was mre aggressive twards ther rangutans.
