Dr. Helena Hrder frm the University f Gthenburg in Sweden, wh led the research, said, “These findings are exciting because it’s pssible that making peple’s cardivascular (心血管的) system fitter in middle age culd delay r even stp them frm getting dementia.”
In the research, 191 wmen with an average age f 50 did a bicycle exercise test until they were very tired t find ut their peak cardivascular capacity. The average peak wrklad was 103 watts. Out f these, 40 wmen qualified as highly fit, achieving a capacity f 120 watts r mre. Meanwhile, 92 wmen were categrized as mderately fit, and 59 were cnsidered t have a lw level f fitness, with a peak wrklad f 80 watts r less, r their tests were stpped due t health issues.
These wmen were later mnitred fr dementia six times in the next frty years. During this time, 44 wmen gt dementia. Only 5% f the highly fit wmen gt dementia, while 25% f the medium-fit wmen and 32% f the lw-fit wmen gt it.
“Nevertheless, this study des nt establish a causal relatinship between cardivascular fitness and dementia; it nly indicates a crrelatin,” Hrder nted. “Further research is necessary t determine if imprved fitness culd psitively influence the risk f dementia and t identify the mst critical perid in ne’s life fr maintaining a high fitness level.” She als acknwledged the study’s limitatins, including a small sample size and the fact that all participants were frm Sweden, which may limit the generalizability f the findings.
