    Ugandan student’s study and adaptatin f traditinal Chinese craft helps build bridges thrugh art. With its balanced, runded pt and cups, the tea set seems like Chinese ceramic (陶瓷) at first glance. But clser inspectin f its pattern reveals an ancient Ugandan design. “My prjects always aim t jin sme aspects f Chinese and Ugandan culture tgether,” says the tea set’s creatr, Ocen Rbert.
    In 2015, Rbert arrived in China frm the East African natin t pursue a higher educatin in ceramic arts at Jingdezhen Ceramic University in East China’s Jiangxi prvince. The Ugandan is als enrlled in a PhD prgram fcusing n design, with his art pieces sld at natinal-level exhibitins in China.
    He says, “I lve it here nt nly because f its safety, but the raw materials and the prductin techniques fr ceramics here are als amng the best in the wrld.” During his time in China, Rbert was given many pprtunities t participate in ceramic prductin, exhibitins and even access t experts-all helping t grw the space where he culd express his creativity.
    T deepen his understanding and passin fr traditinal Chinese culture, Rbert spends mst f his free time in lcal museums’ culture and histry sectins. He als gets t knw Chinese prfessinals inside and utside the ceramic wrld. “I wuld lve t slidify my career as an artist here while helping t link Uganda and China,” Rbert says.
