Yu might have heard the saying “the silence was deafening”, but did yu knw that yu might actually be able t hear silence, which is suppsed t be the absence f sund? Nw researchers think that we might actually be able t hear silence. These findings nw finally deal with the questin f whether we can hear silence, which they say is smething that has baffled the philsphers fr years.

But surprisingly, what ur wrk suggests is that nthing is als smething we can hear.” The team used adapted versins f auditry illusins (听觉错觉) t create new versins in which the riginal sund was replaced by mments f silence. What it did say was that the silence-based illusins and sund-based illusins prduced the same effect.
Chaz Firestne, an assistant prfessr f psychlgical and brain sciences, said, “Philsphers have lng debated whether silence is smething we can literally perceive (感知), but there hasn’t been a scientific study aimed directly at this questin. Our apprach was t ask whether ur brains treat silence the way they treat sunds.” Thrugh a series f experiments using the apprach, they fund we culd get the same illusins with silence as we gt with sunds, which prved that we actually heard silence.
Ian Phillips, a c-authr f the study, said, “There is at least ne thing that we hear that isn’t a sund, and that is the silence that happens when sunds g away. The kinds f illusins and effects seem t be unique t the auditry prcessing f a sund, and we als get them with silence, suggesting we really d hear absences f sund t.”
