As wildfires have intensified in recent years, scientists have begun t catalg the ways the massive events influence weather — but s far, all have lked at either enrmus r relatively small scales.
But during 2018’s destructive fire seasn in Califrnia — at the time, the wrst n recrd — Jiwen Fan started t wnder: Culd the ever mre frequent and intense fires raging in the western United States affect weather nt just right next dr, but as much as 1500 miles dwnwind?
Majr weather patterns in the U.S. tend t travel frm west t east alng with the prevailing winds. Fan nticed that just a few days after Califrnia’s Carr Fire kicked ff in mid-July — shckingly early in the expected fire seasn — a massive days-lng strm struck the High Plains states like Wyming and Clrad with flding rains, baseball-sized hail, and 90-mile-an-hur gusts. The strm caused ver $100 millin in damages. Was it pssible the tw were cnnected?
Her team had the exact right tls t investigate the questin. First, they dug thrugh 10 years f weather and fire data t find examples f ther big cnflagratins (大火) ccurring right befre majr strm events. The pairing was actually quite rare. That’s because strm seasn in the Central U.S. is centered arund early summer; in the past, that seasn was winding dwn by the time wildfire seasn increased in August and September. But wildfires have been igniting earlier and earlier, pushed frward by climate change-driven drught and heat. Since 2010, the team fund several big central strms that cincided with majr Western fires.
They fcused n a 2018 strm. Using a weather mdel that added in the effects f heat and smke emitted frm the burns, they simulated days-lng strm event in several different ways. As the real situatin had been, with massive fires burning in the West; as if thse fires didn’t exist; and anther set f experiments that included and excluded the effect f sme smaller lcal fires that had been burning at the time.
The differences were dramatic: The cmbined impact frm the faraway western fires and the lcal nes bsted the ccurrence f heavier rainfall — where mre than abut 0.8 inches f rain fell in an hur — by 38 percent. The utbursts f big hail, with hailstnes larger than tw inches — nearly the size f a baseball— happened 34 percent mre in the fiery cnditins. But the far-ff fires had a much larger effect.
“The impact is very significant,” says Fan. “That was a little surprising.”
63. What’s the study f Jiwen Fan and her team mainly abut?
A. The effect f cnflagratins n the weather f ther areas.
B. The scale f all the cnflagratins.
C. The number f all the cnflagratins that happened in 2018.
D. The cause f the Califrnia’s Carr Fire.
64. Why was it rare fr Fan’s team t pair big cnflagratins with majr strm events?
A. Because they were in lack f labr t dig thrugh all the data.
B. Because strm seasn in the Central U.S. isn’t in line with the wildfire seasn.
C. Because wildfires usually take place in the early summer.
D. Because wildfires are pushed frward by big strms.
65. Hw did Fan and her team cnduct their study?
A. They invited ther experts t d experiments with them.
B. They interviewed a lt f lcal peple and analyzed the data they cllected.
C. They simulated strm event in different ways by using a weather mdel.
D. They bserved the real situatins and calculated thrughly.
66. What des the last sentence “That was a little surprising.” imply?
A. The number f the big wildfires was beynd the team’s expectatin.
B. The size f the hailstnes was definitely incredible.
C. The ccurrence f heavy rainfall shcked Fan’s team.
D. The cnflagratins did have great effect n the ccurrence f strm in ther areas.
