On a cld mrning in May, I received a fascinating email frm a high schl friend, inviting me t a 10-day all-female surfing adventure in Prtugal. The ffer was irresistible, and I instantly knew my answer was yes.
The trip seemed simple enugh. Ten wmen, ranging frm 30 t 45 years ld, all strangers, will gather n the Prtuguese cast t embrace the challenge f surfing the Atlantic waves.
As a travel enthusiast, I quickly sught permissin frm my bss fr this nce-in-a-lifetime jurney.
Thrugh my 33 years, I’ve bserved a cmmn adult tendency: we ften limit urselves t refinding skills we already pssess. There’s a certain pride in imprving ur expertise, becming increasingly knwledgeable in ur chsen fields, yet unintentinally, this fcus ften leaves ther skills undevelped and leads t neglecting ther areas f ptential grwth.
Tw days later, I arrived in Ericeira, a charming surf twn, where I met my surfing grup. Despite ur different persnalities and backgrunds, we were all united in a persistent desire t challenge urselves, learn, tackle and grw.
The shres at Ericeira, where the beginners learn t surf, are shallw and cvered with slippery rcks. They make fr sfter waves but are difficult t navigate (驾驭).
Guided by ur amazing caches, tgether, we faced the waves. Smetimes, it pured with rain, and the waves crashed arund us, but we were still ut there. And with every slip and fall, wrds f encuragement filled the air.
Hnestly, I prbably spent mst f my days frzen t the bne, but that didn’t matter because a new level f genuine jy and persnal achievement had been unlcked.
Learning a new skill taught me the humbleness that can cme frm ding badly at smething new, and the pride that develps when yu finally manage t grasp smething yu’ve been wrking n.
While surfing might nt be my calling, trying it ut inspired me t take mre risks in life, t step utside f my cmfrt zne and t never stp believing in myself. Yu never knw what yu’re capable f if yu dn’t g ut there and try.

Ask any readers wh their favrite fictinal character in a nvel is and yu’ll likely get a detailed explanatin abut the belved character that they admire. It might even sund like they’re talking abut a persn they knw.
In a study, researchers lked at the brains f a grup f peple ver nine days. Half f the grup read the nvel Pmpeii, and half didn’t. After examining, researchers fund the readers’ brains shwed heightened cnnectivity in sme areas. This is likely because the brain imagines the mvement and emtins f the character they read abut in the bk. Even thugh the participants were then asked nt t read the nvel, they kept this heightened cnnectivity. We call that a "shadw activity", almst like a muscle memry. S even after yu’ve finished a bk, yur brain keeps thse benefits fr sme time afterwards.
It has been suggested that peple wh read a lt f fictin becme mre empathic (being able t understand anther persn’s feelings), because fictin is a simulatin (模仿) f scial experiences, in which peple practice and imprve their interpersnal skills. Increase f empathy is imprtant fr peple because empathy is psitively related t creativity, perfrmance at wrk and cperative behavirs.
Besides, reading imprves "Thery f Mind". It is "the ability t understand that thers have mental states that are different frm ne’s wn." Of varius activities, reading nvels has been fund t imprve this ability, while watching televisin prgrams r mvies has been fund t d just the ppsite — a reduced understanding f thers and weaker cgnitive (认知的) develpment verall.
Maybe we shuld put mre f a pririty n nvel-reading. And many readers believe that reading a nvel is far better and mre meaningful than watching any mvie. As David Kidd f the New Schl study said, “Fictin is nt just a simulatr f a scial experience; it is a scial experience.”
16.Which f the statements is true accrding t Paragraph 2?
A.When they finish a bk, the brain cnnectivity disappears.
B.The participants in the study all read the nvel Pmpeii.
C.Reading nvels increases cnnectivity in ur brain.
D.Reading nvels helps enhance ur memry greatly.
17.What d we knw abut nvel readers frm Paragraph 3?
A.They tend t be emtinal in scial experiences.
B.They are mre likely t be innvative and cperative.
    C.They have pr interpersnal skills.
D.They are mre sensitive t thers’ views.
18.What’s the effect f watching TV r mvies?
A.It distinguishes yur views frm thse f thers.
B.It cntributes t yur cgnitive develpment.
C.It reduces yur empathy fr thers a lt.
D.It changes yur verall mental states.
19.What des the underlined wrd "pririty" in the last paragraph mean?
    A.Preference.
    B.Authrity.
    C.Expsure.
    D.Evaluatin.

    C.Nvel-reading is a "shadw activity"

When I think f the hardest mments f my life, irnically many have turned ut t be blessings. The mst severe ne was being pretty much kicked ut f my. PhD prgram at the University f Gergia in 2016.
The prgram in Gergia turned ut nt t be the right fit fr me despite my best effrts. The whle year was riddled with exhaustin, insecurity, fear, and exclusin. I was in therapy myself fr mst f the year t cpe, and the nly thing that made it tlerable was a lt f supprt frm my family and friends.
I was utterly devastated when I went back hme; it felt like my career was ver. Fast frward t tday, hwever, and I can see that getting driven ut f the Gergia prgram was ne f the best things that ever happened t me. In 2017, when I transferred t a dctral prgram in San Dieg, I began t thrive and nw my business is ding exceptinally well. I am deeply grateful I studied in San Dieg and happy that I didn’t stay in Gergia. It was great that I was driven ut! As the saying ges, "What seems like gd r bad news nw can turn ut t be the ppsite in the future."
Irnically, the research and writing training frm the University f Gergia significantly helped me develp my academic, prfessinal, and persnal writing. I wrked hard in Gergia and it paid ff: The learning and grwth I experienced were incmparable.
As my persnal example demnstrates, life is a ttal rllercaster. Every nw and then yu are able t discver a new high, a ceiling-breaking mment, whereas in ther mments yu may feel like yu’re falling deeper and deeper int hell. While these experiences can be incredibly tugh, they present us with valuable pprtunities t trust life and cultivate persnal grwth and learning.
