In 1852, Crumpler mved t Charlestwn, Massachusetts, t begin her medical career as a nurse. In the early 1850s, there was n frmal schl where ne culd becme licensed t practice nursing. Even s, Crumpler assisted several dctrs in Bstn fr eight years. They in turn supprted her applicatin t the New England Female Medical Cllege, where she was awarded a state-funded schlarship.
Crumpler wrked hard at her studies but had t take a leave f absence after tw years t attend t her sick husband, wh unfrtunately passed away in 1863. Mnths later, Crumpler returned t cmplete her final term but was nearly refused after sme faculty members expressed wrry regarding the amunt f time it was taking her t cmplete her cursewrk and were hesitant t let her cme back. Luckily, with several f the schl’s spnsrs supprting her, Crumpler finally received a “Dctress f Medicine” frm cllege, and began seeing patients in and arund her huse, treating them regardless f their ability t pay.
In 1883, Dr. Crumpler published a bk based n jurnal ntes she kept during her years f practice. A Bk f Medical Discurses, specifically aimed at wmen and the care f their children, is believed t be the first medical text written by an African American authr. Many cncepts that are central t the human experience are abstract, such as relatinships, ideas, and time---things we can’t directly see r tuch. We cmmnly use cncrete language t talk and think abut these things, ften thrugh metaphrs.
Using metaphrs is far mre than a petic device f factual statements. A study cnducted at Purchase Cllege fund that metaphrs can frame peple’s perspectives, thereby shaping their reasning and subsequent actins. Fr example, describing the effrt t stp climate change as a “war” rather than a “race” caused peple t feel mre urgency abut reducing emissins.
Anther example is the lightbulb metaphr cmmnly used t describe new ideas, suggesting that new thughts appear suddenly like a light switch being turned n. Hwever, this metaphr implies that new ideas cme effrtlessly and are accessible nly t a select few geniuses, such as Isaac Newtn, wh suppsedly develped his thery f gravity frm a sudden insight abut a falling apple. It may lead peple t questin their capability t generate news ideas, and as a behaviral cnsequence, peple may underestimate the rle f hard wrk and cntinuus learning in bringing abut change.
An alternative way t describe ideas is by cmparing new thughts t seeds that fall n fertile grund and---if cared fr---will grw and develp ver time. Different frm the lightbulb metaphr, the seed metaphr implies an understanding that generating new ideas is a labrius prcess, which requires time and effrt. It als suggests that anybdy can be the cultivatr f ideas as lng as they put their mind t it.
The subtle effects f metaphrs shw hw pwerful language can be, even thugh we ften dn’t realize it. Wh’d have thught a simple use f a lightbulb metaphr culd prfundly affect hw we understand the cncept f innvatin? Given the nature f ur metaphrical minds, it is wrth asking: are ur metaphrs suitable? We we it t urselves and thers t use metaphrs apprpriately. These chices---cnscius r nt---can be cnstructive r destructive.
    28. What des the study find abut metaphrs?
    A. They make language mre petic.
    B. They help clarify abstract cncepts.
    C. They may cause cnflicts between peple.
    D. They can shape peple’s minds and behavir.
    29. What des the underlined wrd “underestimate” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
    A. Evaluate.B. Overlk.C. Emphasize.D. Acknwledge.
    30. Hw des the seed metaphr differ frm the lightbulb metaphr?
    A. It stresses the imprtance f natural talent.
    B. It indicates cnsistent effrts f individuals.
    C. It leads t peple’s dubt abut their creativity.
    D. It simplifies the prcess f cultivating new ideas.
    31. What is the purpse f the last paragraph?
    A. T call n peple t use metaphrs prperly.
    B. T present the ptential limitatins f metaphrs.
    C. T reveal the difficulty f understanding metaphrs.
    D. T urge peple t reflect n the cncept f innvatin.

Awe experiences typically invlve the perceptin f smething incredibly vast r pwerful. These are ften encunters with nature---such as lking at a brad view f muntains r up at the billins f stars in the night sky. “Awe is the feeling f being in the presence f smething vast that ges beynd yur understanding f the wrld,” said Dacher Keltner, a psychlgist at the University f Califrnia, Berkeley.
At the University f Chicag’s Human Nature and Ptentials Lab, research has shwn that children ver the age f fur can perceive and respnd t awe-inspiring experiences. This early sense f awe influences their mtivatin fr learning and self-perceptin. When expsed t awe-inspiring visuals, such as vast natural scenes r natural disasters, children feel a “small self” cmpared t their feelings after viewing everyday nature imagery, which makes them mre mtivated t explre things that interest them and t understand things in the wrld that they hadn’t learned much abut yet.
While awe is a highly persnal experience, evidence suggests that it has significant scial effects. In ne experiment, participants wh were asked t stand staring at tall trees fr a minute were mre likely t help thers than thse wh lked at a building, suggesting that being in an awe-inspiring envirnment increases mrality and reduces feelings f self-centeredness.
“This is especially critical in the age f scial media,” said Dr. Keltner. “We are at this cultural mment f self-center, criticism, and entitlement (优越感); awe gets us ut f that. It des this by helping us get ut f ur wn heads and realize ur place in the larger cntext, ur cmmunities,” he explained. “Might awe cause peple t becme mre invested in the greater gd, giving mre t charity, vlunteering t help thers, r ding mre t reduce their impact n the envirnment? Our research wuld suggest that the answer is yes.”
    32. What is the first paragraph mainly abut?
    A. The ways f understanding nature.
    B. The definitin f awe experiences.
    C. The significance f awe experiences.
    D. The effect f nature n human perceptin.
    33. What d we knw abut children wh experience awe?
    A. They may lse cnfidence in themselves.
    B. They tend t perfrm better in their studies.
    C. They will knw mre abut natural disasters.
    D. They are mre interested in explring the wrld.
    34. What can be inferred abut awe accrding t Dr. Keltner?
    A. It helps peple develp critical thinking.
    B. It can imprve peple’s physical health.
    C. It encurages peple t reflect n ur culture.
    D. It has a psitive impact n peple’s behavir.
    35. Which can be a suitable title fr the text?
    A. Awe Perceptin in Early Childhd
    B. Awe’s Rle in the Age f Scial Media
    C. The Pwer f Awe Drives Us Out f Self-center
    D. Awe-Inspiring Experiences Push Peple t Learn

Accrding t neurscientist Shirley Mueller, cllecting feeds the pleasure center f the brain, but withut the drawbacks f alchl, gambling, r nictine.
36 Mre than 100,000 years ag, ur ancestrs searched fr crystals, shells, and ther bjects just as seeking fr fd. In mdern times, while sme peple cllect as a statement f wh they are, thers cllect as an investment r a surce f pleasure.
“While the mtivatins t cllect are varied, 37 ” says Brandn Schmeichel, a cmic bk cllectr and a psychlgy prfessr. That distinguishes cllecting frm string up. In terms f it, stuff is btained indiscriminately (不加区分地). Instead f creating a sense f self-wrth, the behavir typically makes thse wh are accustmed t it feel bad abut themselves.
“ 38 Yu have t figure ut where yu can find the desired items, what they’ re wrth, and hw yu will rganize and display yur cllectins,” Mueller says. “Thse activities stimulate areas f the brain invlved in executive functining, skills that include wrking memry, multitasking, and impulse-cntrl.”
On a physilgical level, research shws that tangible bjects have unique effects n brain functins. Visualizing bjects stimulates many areas f the brain at the same time. Each bject is assciated with a persn, experience, r mment in time. In that way, cllectins act as a physical time machine. 39 “This srt f cllecting facilitates ne’s recall abut the past,” Schmeichel says.
Cllecting als seems t hit fundamental psychlgical needs. “Cllectrs ften reprt that the friendship f ther cllectrs is ne f the mst rewarding aspects f cllecting,” Schmeichel reprts in Leisure Sciences. Interacting with sellers, ther cllectrs, r even admirers f yur cllectin can als serve as a fundatin fr relatinship-building. 40
    A. Every item is a signal fr yur memry.
    B. Cllecting requires attaining knwledge.
    C. they typically center arund develping a mre psitive sense f self.
    D. Of curse, cllecting is nt a new phenmenn.
    E. It als functins as a way that actually desn’t cst much.

As a graduate student in Chicag, Andria was given the much exhausting jb f cllecting survey data as part f an academic research prject. Each time she apprached a passer-by, she thught she wuld be tld hw annyed they were. Yet the bad respnses 41 came. Many mre peple were 42 t answer the questinnaires than she had 43 .
Was it pssible, she wndered, that mst f us are wrng abut whether peple want t respnd t ur requests? Over the fllwing decade, she cnducted multiple studies that 44 this was indeed the case: under many circumstances, peple are ften mre likely t 45 than we assume.
