A recent survey f 2,000 Americans reveals the average shpper wastes $1,493.93 n fd per year. That’s almst a fifth f their grcery bill after every shpping trip. One tenth f respndents claim they “never” purchase fd they dn’t end up eating, while three in 10 say this is smething they “always” d.
Half f respndents prefer t head t the grcery stre alne, and when they d, half are mre likely t stick t their list and 36% are less likely t buy fd they dn’t want r need.
Keeping the list in mind is imprtant, as 38 percent are mre likely t let fd be wasted if it wasn’t riginally n their shpping list. Seven in 10 add that when they g t the stre n an empty stmach, they’re mre likely t buy fds they wn’t eat. S they dn’t d that that way. Sme respndents appear t be in a wasteful cycle when it cmes t fd waste. Nearly half usually buy and end up wasting the same fd every mnth because they think they’ll get arund t eating it.
“We can all d better t limit fd waste by sticking t grcery lists and, when we get hme, priritizing eating ur fds that are perishable, like fruits, vegetables, and dairy prducts” says Avcad C-Funder and CMO Mark Abrials in a statement.
Three-quarters feel guilty abut thrwing away uneaten fd because it’s a waste f mney — and 48 percent feel the same, due t the harm fd waste causes t the envirnment. “When it cmes t fd waste, nbdy is perfect,” Abrials adds. “But in rder t cnsider ur envirnmental impact, nt t mentin wasted mney, we think it’s essential t be thughtful abut everything we purchase — whether that’s fd, mattresses r ther gds.”
