When we’re angry, we ften lk fr ways t blw ff steam - a vent (发泄) sessin with a friend, a lng run, r even a few runds f bxing are cmmn ptins. But, accrding t new research, this actually isn’t the best way t cpe with anger. These activities can have the ppsite effect.
A study published in Clinical Psychlgy Review shws that mindfulness activities, such as yga, meditatin, and deep breathing, are much mre effective in reducing anger. Sphie Kjærvik, an expert at Virginia Cmmnwealth University, led the study at Ohi State University. She was inspired by the rise in ppularity f rage rms, which prmte smashing things as a way t cpe with anger. “I wanted t disprve the thery f expressing anger as a way f cping with it,” she said.
Kjærvik and her team analyzed ver 150 studies invlving 10,189 participants f different backgrunds. The analysis was guided by the Schachter-Singer tw-factr thery, which states that emtins are guided by physilgical arusal (激活) and cgnitive assessment.
Kjærvik wanted t see hw arusal levels affect peple’s abilities t cpe with anger. The team analyzed activities that increased arusal, such as hitting a bag, jgging, cycling, and swimming, versus arusal-decreasing activities.
They discvered that mindfulness activities like deep breathing, relaxatin, meditatin, slw-flw yga, prgressive muscle relaxatin, and taking a timeut all decreased anger levels.
“I think it’s really imprtant t break the myth that if yu’re angry yu shuld blw ff steam - get it ff yur chest,” says Brad Bushman, a prfessr at Ohi State University. “Venting anger might sund like a gd idea, but there’s nt a shred f scientific evidence t supprt catharsis (宣泄) thery. T reduce anger, it is better t engage in activities that decrease arusal levels.”
While these findings might cntradict ppular instincts, the best apprach is t use the same strategies we adpt t cmbat stress. “Prgressive muscle relaxatin and general relaxatin might be as effective as mindfulness and meditatin,” Kjærvik says. “The same strategies that wrk fr stress als wrk fr anger.”

C.Arusal Increase: Mindfulness Activities Outperfrming Venting
D.Managing Emtins: Physical Activities as an Effective Apprach
Vast plains f slar panels can help nature mre than clean energy: As ppulatins f crucial pllinatrs (虫媒) decline, develpers have been seeding the grunds f their slar arrays (阵列) with native wildflwers. Nw a five-year study published in Envirnmental Research Letters, cnfirms that this apprach bsts the pllinatrs’ abundance and diversity —— with spillver benefits fr surrunding farms.
Frm 2018 thrugh 2022, Argnne Natinal Labratry landscape eclgist Lery J. Walstn and his clleagues regularly visited tw such arrays cvering hectares (公顷) each in suthern Minnesta. The scientists recrded the number and kinds f pllinatrs the wildflwers attracted and fund ppulatins f bees, beetles, butterflies, mths, and mre had increased n-site —— even as they cntinued declining elsewhere in the U. Further big lsses wuld be disastrus fr ecsystems and agriculture: 75 percent f Nrth American plant species rely n pllinatrs.
The federal gvernment’s energy gals require several millin hectares fr slar energy, with mre than 80 percent f the prjects planned fr frmer agricultural land; seeding it this way culd help save endangered pllinatrs.
During their study, Walstn and his team watched gldenrd sldier beetles bm as their namesake flwer, gldenrd blmed arund the arrays. As ther flwers blmed,a symphny f insects appeared. Native bees saw the mst stunning grwth, with their ppulatin increasing 20 times by the study’s end. Mnarch butterflies als increased in number and fluttered their dtted wings acrss the sites. Twice as many bees visited sybean fields clse t the slar sites as fields farther away, making the nearby plts’ gains cmparable t thse f neighbring land enrlled in cnservatin prgrams.
The apprach’s efficacy in ther parts f the cuntry— such as the desert Suthwest — remains t be seen. Nevertheless, as Walstn says, at least in the Midwest, “if yu plant it, yeah, they’ll cme.”
