Mats Malm, the permanent secretary f the Swedish Academy, which rganizes the prize, said at a news cnference in Stckhlm that Han was receiving the hnr “fr her intense petic writing that bravely discusses histrical events and expses the fragility f human life.”
Han, 53, was brn in 1970 in Gwangju, Suth Krea. Her father was als a nvelist, but much less successful. The family struggled financially and mved frequently. In a 2016 interview with The Times, Han said her childhd experience “was t much fr a little child, but I was all right because I was surrunded by bks.”
When Han was 9, her family mved t Seul just mnths befre the Gwangju uprising (起义), when gvernment army fired n crwds f prtesters, killing hundreds.
The event shaped her views n humanity’s capacity fr vilence, Han said in the 2016 interview. She als recalled seeing images f peple wh lined up t dnate their bld t thse wh were injured in the uprising.
“It was like tw unslvable riddles imprinted n my mind: Hw can humans be s vilent, and hw can humans be s nble?” she said. “When I write nvels, I find myself always returning t the theme f what it means t be human.”
Han studied literature at Ynsei University in Krea, and her first published wrks were pems. Her first nvel, “Black Deer,” which came ut in 1998, was a mystery abut a missing wman. In the 2016 interview, Han said it was arund that time that she develped the idea fr a shrt stry abut a wman wh becmes a plant, which she eventually develped int “The Vegetarian.”

Researchers have develped a rapid Raman spectrscpy-based methd(拉曼光谱算法) fr detecting and quantifying early bacterial infectin in crps.
Due t the increasing demand fr glbal fd supply and security, there is a grwing need t imprve agricultural prductin systems and increase crp prductivity. Glbally, bacterial pathgen infectin(细菌病原体感染) in crp plants is ne f the majr cntributrs t agricultural prductin lsses. Climate change als adds t the prblem by quickening the spread f plant diseases. Hence, develping methds fr rapid and early detectin f pathgen-infected crps is imprtant t imprve plant disease management and reduce crp lss.
The breakthrugh by researchers ffers a faster and mre accurate methd t detect bacterial infectin in crp plants at an earlier stage, as cmpared t existing techniques. Traditinally, plant disease diagnsis invlves a simple visual inspectin f plants fr disease symptms and severity. “Visual inspectin methds are ften ineffective, as disease symptms usually shw nly at relatively later stages f infectin, when the pathgen lad is already high, and treatments are limited. Hence, new methds are required fr rapid and early detectin f bacterial infectin. The idea wuld be like having medical tests t identify human diseases at an early stage, instead f waiting fr visual symptms t shw, s that early interventin r treatment can be applied,” says MIT Prfessr Rajeev Ram, wh is a c-crrespnding authr n the paper.
“We have develped a quantitative Raman spectrscpy-based algrithm that can help farmers t identify bacterial infectin rapidly. The develped diagnstic algrithm makes use f Raman spectral bimarkers and can be easily carried ut in clud-based cmputing and predictin platfrms. It is mre effective than existing techniques as it enables accurate identificatin and early detectin f bacterial infectin, bth f which are critical t saving crp plants that wuld therwise be destryed,” explains Gajendra Pratap Singh, scientific directr and c-lead authr.
The develpment f this rapid and nninvasive methd culd imprve plant disease management and have a transfrmative impact n agricultural farms by efficiently reducing agricultural prductin lss and increasing prductivity.
28. What’s the significance f develping the Raman spectrscpy-based methd?
A. It quickens the spread f plant diseases.
B. It cntributes t agricultural prductin lss.
C. It can detect early bacterial infectin in crps.
D. It can imprve plant disease management and reduce crp lss.
29. Hw des the authr explain the newly develped methd in paragraph3?
A. By listing figures.
B. By giving examples.
C. By making a cmparisn.
D. By making an assumptin.
30. What des the advantage f the new methd indicate?
A. Nip in the bud.
B. N pains, n gains.
C. Mre haste, less speed.
D. All that glitters is nt gld.
31. Which is the best title f the text?
A. The Way t Increase Crp Prductivity.
B. The Imprtance f Detecting Bacterial Infectin.
C. Reasns fr Develping Raman Spectrscpy-based Methd.
D. New Methd fr Early Detectin f Bacterial Infectin in Crps.

Here’s a quick quiz. Persn A des a favr fr yu. Persn B asks yu t d a favr fr him. Wh d yu tend t like mre? Surprisingly, the answer is Persn B.This quirk (怪癖) f human nature is knwn as the Ben Franklin Effect.
Benjamin Franklin came acrss the phenmenn in 1736 when serving as a clerk t the Pennsylvania Assembly. A pwerful member didn’t care fr Franklin and threatened t make life miserable fr him. What t d? Instead f winning him ver with sweet talk, Franklin asked if he culd brrw a rare and valuable bk the man wned. This request altered the man’s attitude and paved the way fr their friendship. Franklin’s takeaway: “He that has nce dne yu a kindness will be ready t d yu anther, than he whm yu yurself have bliged.”
Several studies have cnfirmed this. But hw can we explain the Ben Franklin Effect? Sme psychlgists refer t cgnitive dissnance (失调). It’s difficult t hld tw cntradictry thughts at the same time. It makes us uncmfrtable. We reslve this tensin by changing ur mind. “I dn’t like Je, but I am ding him a favr,” we might think. “S maybe I d like him.”
While cgnitive dissnance explains a lt, it alne desn’t explain the Ben Franklin Effect. One 2015 study fund that it was, rather, the affiliative (亲和的) mtive that the requests cnvey. That is, we humans want t maintain gd relatins with ther humans, and ne way t achieve this is by ding favrs fr thers. This explains a lt abut altruistic behavir. We like being useful and, by extensin, we like thse wh give us the pprtunity t d s. It’s in ur genes.
Yet there is much we still dn’t knw abut the Ben Franklin Effect. Des it apply equally acrss cultures? Is there a pint beynd which asking a favr makes yu less, nt mre likable? Asking t brrw a bk is ne thing; asking t brrw a car is anther.
32.Why des the authr mentin Benjamin Franklin’s experience?
A.T illustrate a dilemma in making chices.B.T suggest a way f striking up friendships.
C.T stress the imprtance f strategic requests.D.T intrduce the rigin f the Ben Franklin Effect.
33.What is a reasn fr peple’s tendency t like thse asking fr favrs?
A.Reducing the tensin caused by scial cntact.
B.Increasing the chance f getting help in return.
C.Aviding the discmfrt frm cnflicting thughts.
D.Establishing a cperative cmmunity f shared trust.
34.What des the underlined wrd “altruistic” prbably mean in paragraph 4?
A.Selfless.B.Implite.C.Aggressive.D.Respnsible.
35.What des the authr think f the Ben Franklin Effect?
A.It makes little sense.B.It applies t mst cultures.
C.It has situatinal limitatins.D.It has great practical significance.
