When I was nine, my best friend nearly chked t death n a gbstpper, a type f hard candy. After several attempts, she cughed up the candy. I haven’t had a gbstpper since and I have carried with me a fear f seeing that scene again. Sadly, as I discvered this week, lightning can strike twice.
I was getting ff a tube train in Lndn when I nticed a wman cughing. I slwed dwn, watching her carefully. I had learned that cughing is rarely a sign that smething is terribly wrng. Suddenly, the wman stpped cughing, her eyes widened and she bent ver.
When I went ver t ask if she was OK, she lked up at me, panicked, and pinted t her back. I started hitting her back and screaming fr help. Despite having watched a few vides, I was terrified that I wuldn’t be able t crrectly perfrm the Heimlich, a first-aid methd, and that I wuld have t walk away with guilt fr her death. But it was just the tw f us, alne at an undergrund statin; if I didn’t try t help, n ne wuld. Thankfully, much like with my friend, after a few sharp hits, whatever had been stuck in her thrat came lse. She thanked me, almst embarrassed, and walked up t the lift. I fllwed behind her, shaking, with tears in my eyes.
By the time we reached the lift, we had bth calmed dwn. She tk my hands and thanked me again, befre disappearing. She might have been fine withut my hurried hits n her back—I may nt have actually saved her life—but at least she knew that smene, a virtual stranger whm she wuld never see again, cared.
This experience als taught me abut the bystander effect, where peple assume that thers will help, leading t inactin. I get it: the fear f making things wrse, especially if yu have n medical training, is real. Research suggests that when a “medically cmpetent” persn is assumed t be available during an emergency, direct help frm thers is far less likely t ccur. Smetimes, thugh, regardless f wh else culd be nearby, it may be useful t get invlved. S it was with the cughing wman n the tube.
4. Hw did the friend’s chking incident affect the authr?
A. She lived with a sense f guilt.
B. She realized the imprtance f first aid.
C. She deepened her understanding f the bystander effect.
D. She develped a fear f witnessing similar events.
5. What did the authr d t help the wman n the tube?
A. She relieved the wman’s cughing.
B. She walked the wman up t the lift.
C She perfrmed first aid by hitting the wman’s back.
D. She fund a “medically cmpetent” persn fr her.
6. Which situatin can be described as the bystander effect?
A. Yu vlunteered t help an ld man carrying a heavy bag.
B. Yu asked yur brther wh is a dctr t save a dying wman.
C. Yu walked away after the rescue men asked yu t leave the scene .
D. Yu avided invlvement when seeing an injured lady n the rad.
7. What can we learn frm this passage?
A. A gd turn deserves anther.B. Every clud has a silver lining.
C Actin speaks luder than inactin.D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Yu might text yur friend a white lie t get ut f ging t dinner, exaggerate yur height n a CV nline t appear mre attractive r invent an excuse fr yur bss ver email t save face.
Scial psychlgists have lng wndered where peple tend t lie the mst — that is, in persn r thrugh sme ther cmmunicatin medium. A 2004 study was amng the first t investigate the cnnectin between deceptin (欺骗) rates and technlgy. Jeff Hancck’s team had 28 students reprt the number f scial interactins they had thrugh face-t-face cmmunicatin, the phne, instant messaging and email ver seven days. Students als reprted the number f times they lied in each scial interactin.
The results suggested peple tld the mst lies n the phne and the fewest thrugh email, which is bradly in line with a “feature-based mdel”. Accrding t the mdel, specific aspects f a technlgy — whether peple can cmmunicate back and frth smthly, whether the messages are fleeting and whether cmmunicatrs are distant — predict where peple tend t lie the mst.
When Hancck cnducted his study few students had a Facebk accunt. The iPhne was in its early stage. What wuld his results lk like nearly 20 years later?
In a new study, I recruited (招募) 250 peple and studied interactins frm mre frms f technlgy. The participants recrded their scial interactins and number f interactins with a lie ver seven days, acrss face-t-face cmmunicatin, scial media, the phne, texting, vide chat and email. The results shw peple seem t lie accrding t the “feature-based mdel”.
There are several pssible explanatins fr these results. Phne and vide chat, fr example, might make deceptin less cstly t a scial relatinship if caught. Deceptin rates might als differ acrss technlgy because peple use sme frms f technlgy fr certain scial relatinships. Fr example, peple might nly email their clleagues (同事), while vide chat might be a better fit fr mre persnal relatinships.
Peple ften believe just because we use technlgy t interact, hnesty is harder t cme by. Nt nly is this perceptin (看法) misguided, but it is als unsupprted by enugh evidence. The belief that lying is cmmn in the digital age just desn’t match the data.
8. What des the authr intend t d in the first paragraph?
A. Reveal the tendency f peple t tell lies n scial media.
B. Intrduce the tpic f technlgy’s rle in peple’s telling lies.
C. Demnstrate the increasing ppularity f scial media.
D. Illustrate peple’s ways f scial interactins.
9. What d the studies by Hancck and the authr have in cmmn?
A. Their participants were all students.
B. They bth aimed t reduce deceptin rates.
C. Their results were bth cnsistent with a certain mdel.
D. They analyzed the same kind f scial relatinships.
10. What can be inferred frm paragraph 6?
A. Scial media users tend t lie mre.
B. Clse peple are mre likely t lie t each ther.
C. Lying can greatly influence friendships.
D. Deceptin rates can be reduced by using technlgy.
11. What des the authr think f peple lying in scial interactins?
A. It is unacceptable amng friends.
B. It wrsens interpersnal relatinships.
C. It desn’t happen as frequently as expected.
D. It is in line with advances in technlgy

After tracking flwers n a prairie (草原) in Minnesta fr 21 years, scientists reprted that the plants reprduce mre successfully in the year fllwing a carefully cntrlled burn. Understanding the relatinship between prairie plants and fire is imprtant fr preserving this ecsystem which is becming rapidly smaller, says Stuart Wagenius, a cnservatin scientist.
Fire prvides an additinal advantage fr the narrw-leaved purple cneflwer (紫锥花), as Wagenius and his clleagues say. T really blm (开花), they need a little help: Enter the fire. Between 1996 and 2016, Wagenius says his team tracked nearly 8,000 purple cneflwers n the Staffansn Prairie Preserve. In 9 f thse years, they cnducted cntrlled burns ver 400 times. “In the summer after a burn, many mre plants flwer,” Wagenius says. “It is just a huge flwering festival.”
Purple cneflwers and many ther prairie plants were previusly knwn t blm energetically after fires. Hwever, the researchers said that fire als stimulated purple cneflwers t blm at the same time in the summer after a burn. This meant that instead f being uncnnected, the purple cneflwers were surrunded by ptential mates and went n t prduce nearly duble the number f seeds cmpared with ther years. Wagenius says it’s nt yet clear exactly hw fires signal the flwers t get busy.
The new findings may help the peple wh manage prairies t better understand the different ways that fire affects the plants grwing in these habitats, said Kathryn Yurknis, a grassland eclgist wh was nt invlved in the research. Hwever, Yurknis added, it remains t be shwn hw the fires influence the purple cneflwer ppulatin. “This paper implies that making mre seeds wuld mean mre seeds wuld land n the sil and enter the ppulatin f plants — but they dn’t actually examine that step,” she said. “I’d be curius t see whether this actually translates t mre purple cneflwers.”
12. What is the basis fr the research?
A. Prairies are easy t disappear.B. Plants n a prairie are diverse.
C. Fire relates psitively t prairie plants.D. Withut fire, flwers wn’t blm.
13. What des the authr intend t cnvey with figures cited in paragraph tw?
A. Wagenius’s team was cmmitted indeed.
B. Samples f flwers were rich in number.
C. Time spent n the research was lng.
D. The findings were relatively cnvincing.
14. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A. The result f plants being uncnnected.
B. The influence f fires n prairie plants.
C. The prcess f prairie plants’ grwing after fires.
D. The reasn fr plants’ blming at the same time.
15. What is Kathryn Yurknis’s attitude t the research finding?
A. Uninterested.B. Prejudiced.C. Objective.D. Oppsed.
