Peple in daily life usually wash their prduce befre eating t remve pesticide residues (农药残留物). But are yur fruits and vegetables really clean enugh t eat? Nw, 14-year-ld Sirish Subash frm Gergia has wn the 2024 3M Yung Scientist Challenge fr inventing an AI-based handheld pesticide detectr that is very accurate in detecting pesticide leftvers n fd. The ninth grader at the Gwinnett Schl f Mathematics, Science and Technlgy in Snellville has received the title “America’s Tp Yung Scientist”.
Nw in its 17th year, the challenge supprts middle schl students wh think creatively and apply science, technlgy, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) principles t make inventins. When the finalists are chsen, they are paired with a 3M scientist wh guides them ver the summer t help take their ideas frm just cncepts t mdels.
Sirish spent fur mnths cmpeting against nine ther finalists. The finalists had t cmplete a series f interactive challenges and were evaluated n their innvatin, applicatin f STEM, as well as their ability t inspire thers.
“This year’s Yung Scientist Challenge finalists have shwn an incredible ability t develp creative slutins t sme f the wrld’s mst pressing challenges,” Trie Clarke, the chief public affairs fficer, said in the press release. “I am beynd impressed and inspired by their intelligence and their scientific minds.”
Tw ther finalists included secnd-place winner Minula Weerasekera frm Beavertn, Oregn wh develped a real slutin fr string energy lnger and third-place winner William Tan frm Scarsdale, New Yrk wh develped a useful AI smart artificial reef (礁) t prtect bidiversity underwater.
It was reprted that Sirish’s jurney t winning the award came frm watching his mther washing vegetables and fruits and warning him t always d s. He wndered whether washing actually made a difference. And he tested the device n mre than 12,000 fd samples including strawberries, apples, tmates and spinach. The device wrks by shining light n the surface f the prduce and measuring the wavelengths that bunce back.

Micrplastics are inescapable. In the human bdy, they’ve shwn up in bld and lungs. Nw, scientists have als discvered the tiny pllutants in brain tissue, specifically the lfactry bulb (嗅球) that sits abve the nse. They shared their findings n Mnday.
Humans have tw lfactry bulbs lcated in the frebrain, which are cnnected t each nasal cavity (鼻腔) by the lfactry nerve. Olfactry bulbs help detect and prcess smells, passing infrmatin frm the nse t the brain. Micrplastics have been fund in human brains, accrding t recent research that has nt yet been peer-reviewed.
The new findings raise cncerns amng researchers that the lfactry pathway might allw micrplastics t access the brain and ptentially reach brain areas beynd the lfactry bulb.
Fr the study, the team sampled lfactry bulb tissue frm 15 patients. The patients in the study had died at ages ranging frm 33 t 100. Eight f the samples cntained micrplastics, r bits f plastic less than five millimeters lng. The researchers fund 16 ttal plastic fibers and particles (微粒) made f sme chemical substances. The mst cmmn was a type f plastic that’s used widely in clthes, furniture, rugs, packaging and mre.
The micrplastics the researchers fund are “much smaller than thse f several ther studies that have determined the presence f micrplastics in human rgans, such as kidneys, liver, etc,” study c-authr Luis Fernand Amat-Lurenc says. The findings dn’t cme as a surprise t the team, cnsidering the cmmn presence f micrplastics. In additin, the nse’s jb is t prevent dust, particles and ther substances frm reaching the lungs, s it makes sense that nasal tissue wuld als capture tiny plastics.
But it remains unclear whether micrplastics can reach the brain via the lfactry pathway. The ptential cnsequences f having micrplastics in the human bdy are als mstly unknwn, thugh sme studies suggest they culd be harmful t human health. The particles are there, but we dn’t knw anything abut what they’re ding.

A.It helps find and deal with smells.B.It clears the air’s dust and particles.
C.It cnnects the nasal cavities t the lungs.D.It prevents micrplastics frm entering the brain.
9.What might shw the existence f micrplastics in human brains?
A.The very sticky bld in human brains.B.The sensitivity f the lfactry pathway.
C.The detectin f micrplastics in the lungs.D.The presence f micrplastics in the lfactry bulb.
10.What was the main finding f the study in paragraph 4?
A.The size f the micrplastics.B.The age range f the patients.
C.The variety f micrplastics fund arund.D.The universality f micrplastics in the samples.
11.What can we infer abut the prbable results f micrplastics?
A.They require further research.B.They are well understd and dcumented.
C.They have nthing t d with human health.D.They have been prven t cause significant harm.
