It was my birthday, and I was celebrating it as I had fr years: by watching the meter shwer (流星雨). But this year was different. At 23, I was away frm my family fr the first time. I was wrking n my graduate degree in medicine as I had planned t d fr the past 15 years. But nw, watching the meter shwer, I began t questin that path.
In the weeks since starting my degree, I had met peple in areas I had never cnsidered — neurscience, archaelgy, and even astrphysics. Culd my lifelng lve fr astrnmy be mre than a hbby? Shuld I stick t my lng-standing plans r turn t the unknwn?
Then anther event helped me make a decisin: a slar eclipse (日食). I fund a quiet spt in a valley. The anticipatin built as the Mn gradually slid in frnt f the Sun. Finally, the wrld arund me became dark. The water was still, the birds became nisy, and the sunset surrunded me. I knew what I had t d. I gave up medicine t pursue previusly unimagined ptins.
Nw, n my final year f my Ph. D. prgram in astrnmy, I realize that my expsure t the night sky grwing up gave me a great gift. It ffered me a universal view: Facing ur vast universe, ur individual needs, desires, and insecurities becme insignificant, bringing humanity tgether. It liberated me frm allwing earthly wrries, shame, r self-dubt t stand in the way f pursuing new dreams.
I created a prject called Dark Energy Explrers, a prject that gets the public invlved in real cutting-edge astrnmical research. Nw, it’s a cmmunity f 17,000 vlunteers frm 140 cuntries. During this year’s meter shwer, I’ll be presenting my research at the Internatinal Astrnmical Unin cnference. The little girl inside me wh watched the meter shwer frm the backyard can’t wait t watch the same bits f rck and ice flash acrss the Suth African sky.

Researcher Jesse Ddge did sme math n the amunt f energy AI chatbts use. “One query (查询) t ChatGPT uses abut the same amunt f electricity as lighting ne electric lamp fr abut 20 minutes,” he says. “S, yu can imagine with millins f peple using smething like that every day, that adds up t a really large amunt f electricity.”
Ddge has been studying hw artificial intelligence cnsumes energy. T generate its answers, AI uses far mre pwer than traditinal Internet uses, like search queries r clud strage. And as AI gets mre cmplicated, it needs mre energy t perate. In the U.S., a majrity f that energy cmes frm burning fssil fuels like cal and gas which are primary drivers f climate change.
Mst cmpanies wrking n AI, including ChatGPT maker OpenAI, dn’t disclse their emissins. But, last week, Ggle released a new sustainability reprt. Deep within the 86-page reprt, Ggle said its greenhuse gas emissins rse last year by 48% since 2019. It wes that rise t its data center energy cnsumptin and supply chain emissins.
“As we further integrate AI int ur prducts, reducing emissins may be challenging,” the reprt reads. Ggle has the gal f reaching net-zer emissins by 2030. Since 2007, the cmpany has said its cmpany peratins were carbn neutral (碳中和的) because f the carbn ffsets (碳补偿) it buys t match its emissins. But, starting in 2023, Ggle wrte in its sustainability reprt that it was n lnger “maintaining peratinal carbn neutrality due t financial pressure”. The cmpany says it’s still pushing fr its net-zer gal in 2030.
“Ggle’s real mtivatin here is t build the best AI systems that they can,” Ddge says. “And they’re willing t pur a tn f resurces int that, including things like training AI systems n bigger and bigger data centers all the way up t supercmputers, which causes a large amunt f electricity cnsumptin and therefre CO2 emissins.”
Micrsft has taken its climate pledge ne step further than Ggle, saying it will be carbn negative by 2030. Hwever, it t is facing difficulty because f its fcus n AI.
    28. What is mainly talked abut in Paragraph 3?
    A. AI’s great demand fr energy.B. AI’s scientific imprvement.
    C. The pwerful functin f AI.D. The cmplicated peratin f AI.
    29. Why des Ggle change its prmise t maintain peratinal carbn neutrality?
    A. It is becming less imprtant.B. The cst might be t large.
    C. It ges against the whle plan.D. The aim has nearly been achieved.
    30. What des the underlined wrd “pledge” in the last paragraph prbably mean?

A newly engineered type f sil can draw water ut f thin air t prvide plants with water and manage cntrlled release f fertilizer (肥料) fr a cnstant supply f nutrients.
Supprting this exciting smart sil system is a hydrgel (水凝胶) material. In experiments, the sil cntaining hydrgel led t the grwth f larger, healthier plants, cmpared t regular sil, all while using less water and fertilizer. The technlgy is als universal enugh t be adpted acrss a wide range f climates, frm dry regins t temperate areas.
Agriculture tday accunts fr 70% f glbal freshwater withdrawals and up t 95% in sme develping cuntries as ur glbal ppulatin cntinues t rise. The U. N. Fd and Agriculture Organizatin (FAO) emphasizes the imprtance f imprving irrigatin (灌溉) efficiency, adpting water-saving technlgies and prmting crps with lwer water ftprints t ensure sustainable fd prductin and water resurce management.
Meanwhile, traditinal farming methds, especially irrigatin and fertilizing, face significant difficulties. As climate change intensifies and water resurces becme increasingly rare, the need fr mre efficient and sustainable irrigatin practices has never been mre urgent. Additinally, cnventinal fertilizatin techniques ften result in t much nutrient expsure, reducing nutrient uptake efficiency and causing envirnmental pllutin, and farmable land degradatin.
“The lack f water cupled with a grwing ppulatin has an immediate impact n fd security,” said Yu, prfessr f Materials Science in the Cckrell Schl. “This new class f hydrgels ffers a slutin t meet the pressing needs f water and efficient nutrient uptake in mdern sustainable agriculture.”
In experiments, plants rted in the hydrgel sil saw a 138% increase in crp length cmpared t a cntrl grup in regular sil. And the imprved sil can achieve 40% water savings, significantly reducing the need fr frequent irrigatin and ensuring strng crp develpment.
This research builds n previus discveries invlving hydrgels that can pull water frm the atmsphere and make farming mre efficient. The prject will cntinue, and the researchers’ next mves invlve integrating different types f fertilizers and lnger field tests.
    32. What is special abut the smart sil?
    A. It prvides air t regular sil.B. It can absrb water frm the air.
    C. It creates fertilizer with air.D. It can be used all ver the wrld.
    33. What is a challenge traditinal farming methds face?
    A. The shrtage f fertilizer.B. The lack f qualified seeds.
    C. The decrease f labr frce.D. The inefficient irrigatin methds.
    34. What des Prfessr Yu think f the new system?
    A. It is impractical.B. It is simple.
    C. It is time-cnsuming.D. It is far-reaching.
    35. What can be the best title fr the text?
    A. Smart Sil Can Water and Feed Itself
    B. Hydrgel Will Take the Place f Sil
    C. Mdern Agriculture Is Facing Drught
    D. Smart Sil Is Apprved fr Prmtin
