He was an American jurnalist wh wrte influential bks and articles abut China in the 1930s.
He actually spent time with the Chinese Red Army and listened t their stries and bserved their day-t-day lives. He als cnducted interviews with Ma Zedng and ther leaders. His bk Red Star ver China brke idelgical bundaries by telling the stries f the Chinese cmmunist mvement frm the inside.
Cmplete the table t rganise yur wn speech abut anther persn wh has helped t increase understanding between tw cuntries.
Gd mrning, everyne. Tday I’m ging t intrduce a great man wh devted his life t practising medicine fr the peple f China – Dr Nrman Bethune. He was brn in 1890, in Canada. He was a cmplicated persn wh was bth very creative and very stubbrn. He was als very hard-wrking, and wanted t make a difference in the wrld. In fact, he invented r imprved numerus surgical prcedures and surgical instruments. Hwever, it was in China that he wuld break natinal bundaries by becming ne f the few Western dctrs t help the Chinese in their wartime struggle. His cntributin t the welfare f the Chinese peple was nt nly unusual, but immense.
Having married a wealthy wman, Bethune had nce enjyed a luxurius lifestyle in Canada. Hwever, his scial cnscience develped during the 1930s, with a visit t the Sviet Unin and time as a surgen during the Spanish Civil War. In January 1938, he left Canada again, this time t help the sldiers in China’s Eighth Rute Army. It was n easy jurney. Travelling thusands f kilmetres, he did nt reach Yan’an until the end f March. By June, he was wrking at the frnt. He sn saw that the medical situatin fr the trps and lcal peple was bad. There were nt enugh medicines r surgical instruments, and the medical staff were nt well trained.
Bethune wrked hard t help the wunded and train his staff, even inventing medical equipment that was suitable fr guerilla warfare in China. The pace at which Bethune wrked can be seen in a battle during April 1939, when he perfrmed 115 peratins in nly 69 hurs. The Chinese, thugh they smetimes fund Bethune difficult because f his stubbrnness, admired him greatly because f his ceaseless hard wrk and his dedicatin t helping the Chinese peple. But tragedy struck when Bethune cut himself while cnducting an peratin. He sn cntracted bld pisning and died n 12 Nvember 1939.
Dr Nrman Bethune had wrked tirelessly as a surgen, teacher and hspital administratr fr the Chinese peple. Their struggle became his wn. Althugh he was nt Chinese, he sacrificed his life fr them. In December 1939, Chairman Ma Zedng wrte an article “In Memry f Nrman Bethune”, as a tribute t Bethune, and called n the Chinese peple t learn frm his example. Dr Nrman Bethune remains the greatest inspiratin fr anyne wh believes that we must fight alngside thers fr justice – even if they are frm a different natin t ur wn.
