The wild ppulatin f African penguins, native t Suth Africa and Namibia, has declined by75% ver the past 20 years, accrding t the Assciatin f Zs and Aquariums, mstly due t the fact that they have great difficulty filling their stmachs. The vast majrity f peple in the UK have access t a smartphne. Therefre, they try t access TikTk, YuTube, Netflix, and pretty much any ther kind f digital media they culd pssibly want, at any time. As ne pster put it n Twitter: "Can’t seem t sleep. Let’s see if the bright light f my phne cntaining all the infrmatin in the entire wrld held inches away frm my face fr the next 15 minutes manages t help me fall int a peaceful sleep."
In thery, being able t access infrmatin r entertainment s easily means we shuld never be bred. But as the University f Trnt’s Katy Y. Y. Tam and Michael Inzlicht explred in a new paper, published in the Jurnal f Experimental Psychlgy: General, switching between lts f different nline cntent culd be making us mre, nt less, bred.
After an initial study, which cnfirmed that peple are mre likely t rapidly switch between shrtfrm vides when they feel mre bred, the team cnducted further experiments t understand hw digital scrlling (滚屏) impacts bredm.
In the first experiment, participants in the n-switching cnditin watched a ten-minute, unskippable vide; thse in the switching cnditin were prvided with seven five-minute vides they culd skip whenever they wanted. After the ten minutes were up, they reprted hw bred they felt. Thse wh culdn’t switch between vides reprted being significantly less bred than thse wh culd, and als rated their experience as mre satisfying, engaging, and meaningful. These results were repeated in a further study, in which sme participants culd switch back and frth in time during ne vide and thers had t watch it in ne g.
Next, the team tk their experiment t the mre naturalistic setting f YuTube. After selecting a vide at least nine minutes lng, sme participants were again tld they culd skip back and frth, while thers were tld that they had t watch the vide thrugh. Again, participants were less bred in the n-switching cnditin, thugh there was n difference in satisfactin, attentin, r meaningfulness.
Overall, the results suggest a great difference between what we think will help with ur bredm and what actually makes us bred. It feels paradxical: if smething feels bring, then it makes sense that we’d jump t smething else; but, in reality, this desn’t seem t d the jb.

Cmbining artificial intelligence (AI) with tday’s envirnmental cntrl systems culd reduce energy cnsumptin fr indr agriculture by 25%, ptentially helping t feed the wrld as its ppulatin rises, Crnell University engineers have fund.
The wrld ppulatin is expected t grw t 9.7 billin by 2050, accrding t the United Natins. This grwth, cmbined with climate change and urbanizatin, requires fixes fr the disadvantages in the wrld’s present fd prductin systems, the researchers said.
Indr farming methds, such as plant factries with artificial lighting, are less sensitive t climate change, but are energy-intensive (能源密集型的) and require careful resurce management t be sustainable. "Existing envirnmental cntrl systems are nt smart enugh," said Fengqi Yu, a prfessr in energy systems engineering at Crnell University.
By using AI techniques like deep reinfrcement learning and cmputatinal ptimizatin (最优化), the scientists analyzed lettuce grwn in indr farms within diverse places.
AI reduces energy use by ptimizing lighting and climate regulatin systems. Energy use drpped t 6.42 kilwatt hurs per kilgram f fresh weight (energy needed r used t prduce ne kilgram f indr-grwn lettuce) frm 9.5 kilwatt hurs per kilgram f fresh weight, in places that use nn-AI technlgy. The researchers fund that fr warmer areas, such as Dubai r the suthern U. S. , AI reduced energy usage t 7.26 kilwatt hurs per kilgram f fresh weight, dwn frm 10.5 kilwatt hurs per kilgram f fresh weight.
Lw ventilatin (通风) during light perids (16 hurs f simulated sunlight) and high ventilatin during dark perids (8 hurs f simulated night) prvided an energy-efficient slutin fr ptimal indr CO2 levels fr phtsynthesis, xygen fr respiratin (呼吸) and plant grwth, and balanced ther ventilatin requirements.
"This is a very similar cncept t smart hmes," Yu said. "We want t be cmfrtable at hme while reducing energy use; s d crps. This wrk fcuses n a smart system t make fd prductin ptimal, sustainable and lwer the carbn ftprint. That’s what AI des very well. We can save quite a bit if we use AI t ptimize the artificial lighting and ther energy systems carefully."
12.What’s the finding f Crnell University engineers?
A.AI can help in the fight against climate change.
B.AI can greatly lessen indr farming energy use.
C.AI can help keep the wrld ppulatin under cntrl.
D.AI can upgrade the existing fd prductin systems.
13.Hw is paragraph 5 mainly develped?
    A.By listing examples.
    B.By analyzing figures.
    C.By giving explanatins.
    D.By making cmparisns.
14.What’s Yu’s attitude twards the applicatin f AI in indr agriculture?
    A.Unclear.
    B.Uncaring.
    C.Favrable.
    D.Dubtful.
15.Where can the text mst prbably be read?
    A.In a science reprt.
    B.In an intrductin t AI.
    C.In a bilgy textbk.
    D.In an educatin magazine.
