In all the time I' ve spent in China, I' ve had my share f emtinal crises. I can't remember which ne it was in particular, but I d remember hw my adpted"aunt" Li nce tk care f me, tucking me up(掖好被角) in an armchair in her Chengdu apartment, bringing me a cup f green tea, peeling and cutting fruit fr me, chatting abut unrelated matters as she prepared ne f her wnderful Sichuanese suppers. Like many Chinese peple, particularly thse f the lder generatin, she didn't shw her lve fr me by hugging r requesting emtinal utpurings, but thrugh fd and ver-cncern.
It tk me a while t becme used t this way f expressing affectin. At first I fund it brusque and bssy:“Have sme prridge! Drink sme sup! Put n sme mre clthes!” But ver time I came t understand what it meant. A grup f Chinese scientists have develped a kind f micr-rbt pwered by in (离子) exchanges t remve micr-plastics and nanplastics (MNPs) frm water, accrding t Jinan University, ne f its develpers.
The rbt is 20 t 100 micrns in diameter, thinner than a human hair. It has an innvated means f btaining energy and can wrk withut additinal energy input.
The research, published in the jurnal Science Advances, states that MNP pllutin in nn-marine waters pses a great threat t the glbal ecsystem. Hwever, existing strategies ften fail t remve the ultra-small plastic particles thrughly. Seeking a better slutin, scientists designed the micr-rbts t remve MNPs frm water, taking their inspiratin frm flr-sweeping rbts. "Flr-sweeping rbts can wrk autnmusly n a planned rute and sweep the garbage near them, s we thught there culd be a similar kind f rbt t clean garbage in the water," said Wang Jizhuang, ne f the leading researchers.
The self-prpelled(自动推进) rbts can interact with surrunding particulates during their mvements, accmplishing the dynamic remval f MNPs in their path. Meanwhile, the absrptin f plastics in the water prduces a flw arund the rbts, thus pushing them t mve autnmusly withut ther energy input. They can als be simply cllected and cntrlled precisely thrugh a prgrammable magnetic field, accrding t Wang.
In their research, the rbts were cnfirmed t shw a remval efficiency f mre than 90 percent during 100 cntinuus missins t remve MNPs with varius cmpsitins, sizes and shapes in the water. It is estimated that every liter f sewage nly needs abut 5 millin micr-rbts t clean up the MNPs in the water, which is very easy t achieve in practice.
The grup has set further research gals, such as finding ways fr the newly-develped rbts t cllect MNPs and degrade them at the same time. It is hped that the develpment f the self-prpelled rbts, with the advantages f affrdable cst and minimal secndary pllutin, will make them suitable fr industrial applicatins, prviding an appealing strategy fr the remval f the ultras-mall plastic particles n a large scale.
    8. What is the micr-rbt able t d?
    A.T clean waste water.
    B.T exchange plastic particles.
    C.T generate energy.
    D.T degrade MNPs.
    9. What inspired Wang t invent this micr-rbt?
    A.Existing strategies.
    B.Flr-m pping rbts.
    C.Pllutin in waters.
    D.Threat t the ecsystem.
    10. Which f the fllwing is NOT a drive frce fr the micr-rbt?
A.A flw prduced when absrbing plastics.
    B.Interactin with particulates arund it.
    C.A prgrammable magnetic field.
    D.The dynamic remval f MNP.
    11. Which factr makes the micr-rbt suitable fr industrial applicatins?
    A.Secndary pllutin.
    B.A minimal size.
    C.Lw cst.
    D.High efficiency.
New research suggests yung children dn't seek help in schl, even when they need it. Our research suggests that children begin t cnnect asking fr help with lking incmpetent in frnt f thers. Their cncern abut reputatin may have significant cnsequences, particularly when it cmes t educatin. If they are afraid t ask fr help because their classmates are watching, learning will suffer.
T learn mre abut hw children think abut reputatin, we applied a classic technique frm develpmental psychlgy. We crafted simple stries and then asked children questins abut these scenaris(设想) t allw kids t shwcase their thinking.
Acrss several studies, we asked 576 children, ages fur t nine, t predict the behavir f tw kids in a stry. One f the characters genuinely wanted t be smart, and the ther merely wanted t seem smart t thers. In ne study, we tld children that bth kids did prly n a test. We then asked which f these characters wuld be mre likely t raise their hand in frnt f their class t ask the teacher fr help.
The fur-year-lds were equally likely t chse either f the tw kids as the ne wh wuld seek help. But by age seven r eight, children thught that the kid wh wanted t seem smart wuld be less likely t ask fr assistance. They were specifically thinking abut hw the characters wuld act in frnt f peers. They culd still imagine situatins in which the kid wh wanted t seem smart wuld seek help: when assistance culd be sught privately (n a cmputer rather than in persn), children thught bth characters were equally likely t ask fr it.
Given ur findings, it seems quite pssible that when children themselves are the nes struggling, they, t, might avid seeking ut help if they are cncerned abut reputatin. If s, this reluctance t seek help when thers are present culd seriusly slw academic prgress.
Hw can we help children vercme these barriers? Teachers culd give children mre pprtunities t seek assistance privately. They shuld als help students perceive asking questins in frnt f thers as nrmal, psitive behavirs. If seeking help is understd as a cmmnplace classrm activity, kids may be less likely t think f it as indicating ne's ability.
    12. Why are yung children unwilling t seek help accrding t the research?
    A.T shwcase their critical thinking.
B.T shw a strng belief in themselves.
C.T avid being seen as lacking abilities.
D.T display initiative in their schlwrk.
    13. Which methd was adpted in the research?
    A.Data analysis.
    B.Questinnaires.
    C.A sample survey.
    D.Scenari simulatin(模拟).
    14. What are kids f seven mst likely t d?
A.Asking the teacher fr assistance in class.
B.Writing an email t smene t seek help.
C.Pretending t be incmpetent amng peers.
D.Admitting their mistakes in frnt f friends.
    15. What might be the best title fr the text?
A.Why kids are afraid t ask fr help
    B.What slw kids' academic prgress
