Dave McNee met Claudia Mandekic 14 years ag. When she tld McNee hw hard it culd be t get students excited abut math, her favurite discipline, he made a surprising suggestin: “Why nt thrw in smething they enjy, like sprts?” The idea f mixing basketball and mathematics gt its first sht in 2011, when the nw clleagues — wh had launched a tutring nn-prfit — were invited t run a summer-schl prgram fr kids wh’d failed Grade 9 math at Gerges Secndary Schl.
When the students shwed up fr their first day, they weren’t exactly excited. Over the next few hurs, Mandekic and McNee gave the kids techniques t imprve their shting while als helping them calculate their field-gal percentage — which, in turn, taught them abut fractins and decimal (分数和小数) pints. At the end f the game, the winning team was determined based n which grup had the highest ttal percentage and had dne the mst efficient math. “When the bell rang, they were s fixated n cllecting their data and figuring ut which team wn that they didn’t leave,” says Mandekic. “I realized we might be nt smething.”
The classes, later named BallMatics, sn spread t ther schls. “I was terrible at math,” says Duglas, wh enrlled in a fast-track summer prgram. “But nce I started BallMatics and realized the sprt I lved was directly tied t math, it made me a lt better at it. Every time I played basketball, I was thinking abut math.”
Almst any math prblem, McNee and Mandekic realized, can be taught n the curt. Kids can learn hw t navigate an X-Y grid t find their next shting spt r absrb the basic principles f trignmetry based n the angle at which they release the ball. In 2019, McNec and Mandekic established a private high schl called Uchenna Academy. At the schl, kids with tp basketball skills can study all subjects, train at their sprt and wrk part-time helping ut with the BallMatics afterschl prgrams.
Duglas, nw 20 and earning a degree in educatin believes the schl’s cmmitment t academics is the key reasn it’s been a winner. “If we didn’t d ur wrk, we weren’t playing at the game,” he says, adding that caches wuld bench kids wh didn’t keep up in class. “At Uchenna, we were student athletes, nt athlete students.”

A recent study has fund that using wd fr cnstructin instead f cncrete and steel can reduce emissins. But Tim Searchinger at Princetn University says many f these studies are based n the false fundatin that harvesting wd is carbn neutral (碳中和). “Only a small percentage f the wd gets int a timber (木料) prduct, and a part f that gets int a timber prduct that can replace cncrete and steel in a building,” he says. Efficiencies vary in different cuntries, but large amunts f a harvested tree are left t be divided int parts, used in shrt-lived prducts like paper r burned fr energy, all f which generate emissins.
In a reprt fr the Wrld Resurces Institute, Searchinger and his clleagues have mdelled hw using mre wd fr cnstructin wuld affect emissins between 2010 and 2050, accunting fr the emissins frm harvesting the wd. They cnsidered varius types f frests and parts f wd ging twards cnstructin. They als factred in the emissins savings frm replacing cncrete and steel.
Under sme circumstances, the researchers fund significant emissins reductins. But each case required what they cnsidered an unrealistically high prtin (一部分) f the wd ging twards cnstructin, as well as rapid grwth nly seen in warmer places, like Brazil. In general, they fund a large increase in glbal demand fr wd wuld prbably lead t rising emissins fr decades. Accunting fr emissins in this way, the researchers reprted in a related paper that increasing frest s between 2010 and 2050 wuld add emissins equal t rughly 10 percent f ttal annual emissins.
Ali Amiri at Aalt University in Finland says the reprt’s cnclusins abut emissins frm rising demand are prbably crrect, but the stry is different fr wd we already harvest. “Bsting the efficiency f current harvests and using mre wd fr lnger-lived purpses than paper wuld cut emissins,” he says. “We cannt just say we shuld stp using wd.”
9. What is wrng with previus researches accrding t Searchinger?
A. They gt wrng statistics.B. They were applied in limited cuntries.
C. They included t many factrs.D. They used an incrrect cncept.
10. What des paragraph 2 mainly talk abut?
A. The prcess f the new research.B. The backgrund f the new study.
C. The challenge f the new research.D. The achievements f the new study.
11. When will the emissins drp ff greatly accrding t the new study?
A. When the rising glbal demand fr wd is cmpletely met.
B. When the increasing frest harvests are widely restricted.
C. When a high prtin f wd is used fr glbal cnstructin.
D. When wd is fully efficiently emplyed fr lasting purpse.
12. What is Ali Amiri’s attitude tward the new result?
A. Favrable.B. Dubtful.C. Objective.D. Critical.
