DRINKS TO KEEP YOU COOLAS THE WORLD HEATS UP!
Given all the heavy weather-related new swirling arund these past few weeks, I thught it might be helpful t write abut smething that culd bring the temperature dwn a little. Fr mnths, I’ve been researching the drinks that peple in ht places use t cl dwn. I’m ging t share fur f my favrites that have been getting me thrugh the warmer days in my air cnditiner-free apartment.
    Limnana
I’ve rarely seen a lemnade that I didn’t want t get my hands n, but this ne is next-level. The recipe I used, frm tw Egyptian American sisters, is simple, luxurius, and easy t make vegan (subbing ccnut milk fr whle). If yu’re a fan f caipirinhas r mjits, this drink is their tart, bittersweet, wrkday-friendly cusin.
    Mang Lassi
Am I ging t lie and tell yu that I’ve made a mang lassi in my dingy blender that can barely turn ice cream int milkshake? N. I haven’t. What I have dne is drive dwn the street and purchase a crate f them frm ne f my favrite restaurants. But if I were ging t attempt these, I’d prbably start with the recipe frm Tea fr Turmeric (by a Pakistani American fd blgger whse recipes rarely miss).
    Mint Tea
Haters will say a ht drink desn’t belng n this list. T thse peple, I say: I believe in science. And while Red Drink is ften assciated with Juneteenth (六月节), it’s versatile and cling enugh t be cnsumed all seasn lng. I’m a Ribs-girly, s the versin I turn t again and again is this ne, frm Bryant Terry’s Afr-Vegan ckbk. But the pssibilities fr this drink are endless, and the recipes are everywhere.

Ging int my Ph.D. prgram, I knew I lved t cmmunicate science t the public as much as I liked ding science. But the few times I presented t brader audiences, I fund myself struggling t explain hw my research might be applied in the real wrld and why it cunts.
The prblem came t a head 5 years int my Ph.D. when I tk a trip t Maine. Many fellw travelers excitedly shared stries abut the latest bks they’d cnsumed. I culd vividly recall every detail f the papers piling up back in the lab, and yet I culdn’t remember the last bk I had read fr fun. I fund myself mstly talking abut my research. As I struggled t cnvey its brader relevance, I nticed that the enthusiasm in my vice faded away with each new cnversatin. “Is my Ph. D. killing my passin fr science?” I thught.
When I returned hme, I reslved t dedicate mre time t reading fr pleasure, and my brther had recmmended a science fictin bk, which blew me away by the scientific technlgies and plts crafted within a wildly imaginative stryline. It was like nthing I had ever read befre.
I kept reading science fictin after I finished my Ph.D. But I still hadn’t gtten back t cmmunicating science t the public until a clleague invited me t speak at a pp culture cnventin (大会), where I gave a speech abut the science behind the classic fictin bk Dune by Frank Herbert.
When the day came t present, I was vercme with anxiety and nervusness until I was n the stage and saw the bright-eyed, curius attendees. After I finished, I was verwhelmed with questins and cmments that spilled ver beynd the given time. It suddenly ccurred t me that this was my path back t science cmmunicatin. I’m glad science fictin helped me prfessinally, fueling my ability t cmmunicate the wnders f science t brader audiences.

Frm the swinging rhythms f the 1950s t the auttuned hks f tday, pp music has undergne a remarkable transfrmatin. But what exactly has changed, and hw can we measure it?
Researchers identify tw majr “meldic (旋律的) revlutins” in pp music histry: ne in 1975 and anther in 2000. These pivtal mments mark significant shifts in the structure and cmplexity f hit meldies. Interestingly, these musical milestnes aren’t perfectly in line with the revlutins in harmny and tne clr, suggesting that different aspects f music may evlve at different rates.
During these revlutins meldies have generally becme simpler, bth in terms f pitch (音高) and rhythm. Mdern pp hits tend t use a smaller range f ntes and simpler rhythmic patterns cmpared t thse frm the 1950s and 60s. At the same time, there was a dramatic increase in “nte density” — the number f ntes squeezed int each secnd f music. This means that while tday’s pp meldies might be simpler in structure, they’re ften delivered mre rapidly, creating a sense f energy and urgency that wasn’t as cmmn in earlier decades.
There are several interesting pssibilities fr what is happening. One thery suggests that as ther aspects f music prductin — like cmplex electrnic beats and richly layered instrumentatin — have becme mre sphisticated, meldies have had t simplify t maintain a balance. Anther explanatin pints t the changing landscape f music cnsumptin. In an era f streaming and scial media, where listeners can skip t the next sng in secnds, there may be mre pressure t create tunes that grab attentin instantly. This culd favr simpler, mre repetitive meldies that are easy t remember and sing alng t.
Relatinships between different musical features have als becme strnger in recent years. Fr example, in pst-2000 pp hits, meldies with mre ntes per secnd tend t be less cmplex in terms f pitch variety. This suggests that mdern pp sngwriting may be fllwing stricter patterns than in the past.
    28. What d the underlined wrds “pivtal mments” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Revlutinary appraches.B. Turning pints.
    C. Significant achievements.D. Histrical events.
    29. What change has taken place in pp music ver the years?
    A. Denser ntes.B. Bigger range f pitch.
    C. Mre cmplex rhythms.D. Mre diverse tne clrs.
    30. Which f the fllwing may cntribute t the revlutin f pp music?
    A. The difficulty in creating catchier tunes.B. The cnventinal patterns t enjy music.
    C. The cnvenience f switching between sngs.D. The need t balance increasingly intense beats.
    31. What’s the purpse f the text?
    A. T prve a viewpint.B. T remve sme dubts.
    C. T illustrate a principle.D. T analyze a phenmenn.
    D
Gldfish may seem like simple creatures swimming in a glass tank, but they pssess a rather cmplicated navigatin system, as discvered by researchers at the University f Oxfrd. Led by Dr. Adelaide Sibeaux, the study aims t shed light n ur understanding f hw fish, and ptentially humans, estimate distances using what culd be described as an internal GPS.
Writing in the jurnal Prceedings f the Ryal Sciety B, Sibeaux and clleagues reprt hw they created a tank in their experiment with 2 cm-wide black and white vertical stripes (垂直条纹) n the walls, cnnected by similar stripes acrss the flr. The team trained nine gldfish t swim a set distance f 70 cm and then return t their starting pint when waved at. The experiment aimed t investigate hw the fish wuld estimate this distance withut any gestures, under different patterns.
Over multiple trials, the gldfish averaged a swim distance f 74 cm, give r take 17 cm, when presented with the vertical 2 cm-wide stripes. Hwever, when the stripe pattern was altered t either narrwer vertical stripes, checked patterns, r hrizntal stripes (水平条纹), the fish’s behavir changed significantly. Narrwer vertical stripes led them t verestimating the distance by 36%, while hrizntal stripes resulted in highly incnsistent estimatins.
Accrding t the researchers, the results indicate that gldfish estimate distances by visually streaming the apparent mtin patterns f bjects in the envirnment (called ‘ptic flw’). Many terrestrial (陆地上的) species are knwn t use ptic flw t estimate distance, but gldfish appear t prcess the infrmatin differently. Terrestrial animals, including humans, estimate distances by measuring hw the angle between their eye and surrunding bjects changes as they travel. Gldfish, n the ther hand, appear t use the number f cntrast changes experienced en-rute.
“This study is grundbreaking because, despite knwing that fish respnd t gemetric infrmatin regarding directin and distance, we dn’t knw hw they estimate distances,” Prfessr Clin Lever, althugh nt invlved in the study, said, “it’s exciting t explre fish spatial mapping because fish navigatin evlved earlier and better than mst mammals.”
    32. Why did Dr. Adelaide Sibeaux cnduct the study n gldfish?
    A. T test hw accurate gldfish’s internal GPS can be.
    B. T create an advanced navigatin system fr humans.
    C. T uncver hw an inbuilt GPS helps calculate distances.
    D. T explre the relatinships between gldfish and humans.
    33. What can we learn abut the experiment?
    A. Peple gestured the gldfish thrughut the experiment.
    B. Gldfish tended t underestimate distances with hrizntal stripes.
    C. The tank was decrated with clrful backgrund patterns.
    D. The tank setting change caused the gldfish’s misjudgment.
    34. Hw des the authr present the results f the study in paragraph 4?
    A. By giving definitin.B. By ffering examples.
    C. By making cmparisn.D. By analyzing statistics.
    35. What attitude des Prfessr Clin hld twards the study?
    A. Objective.B. Ambiguus.C. Disapprving.D. Favrable.
