Lacquer is a natural paint harvested frm a pisnus tree that is native t China, Japan and Krea. Once dried, it is remarkably resistant t water, acid, and, t a certain degree, heat. It is cllected between June and Octber. A wrker can generally handle 400—500 lacquer trees and gather up t 75kg in ttal per year.
After the milky liquid is cllected, it is gently heated t remve water and impurities. Purified lacquer can then be applied t the surface f nearly any bject made frm wd, bamb, clth r metals. Once cated with a thin layer f lacquer, the bject has t be placed in a warm place t dry. Usually, lacquer ware requires thirty r mre catings.
While items cvered with lacquer have been fund in China since the New Stne Age, lacquer ware with cmplex decratin made its first appearance during the Warring States Perid (475—221 BC).
Since then, lacquer ware as an art frm has develped alng tw distinct paths in China: surface decratin and lacquer carving. Surface decratin usually takes the frm f painting. Carved lacquer ware, which cmbines the skills f painting and carving, is a unique Chinese achievement in lacquer art and is als lacquer art in its purest frm.
