T test the design, the team 3D-printed their 1. 1×0. 6 centimeter material. They laded each with sme drug and stuck them inside the cheeks f three beagles, dgs with a similar inner cheek lining t humans. Fr cmparisn, they als delivered the drug t beagles via a pill and via injectin. After three hurs, the team fund that drug plasma cncentratins (血药浓度) in the dgs with the patch were mre than 150 times higher than thse in the dgs that tk a pill.
Besides, 40 healthy human vlunteers self-applied water-filled patches t see hw well they wuld stay n while talking, mving and using their muthwash. After 30 minutes, nly five f the 40 patches had fallen ff, which the study authrs write was because f imprper placement r handling. Mst vlunteers said they had a preference fr a patch ver injectin fr daily, weekly and mnthly applicatins.
Thugh the patches need further testing t determine hw repeated use affects patients, the researchers cnclude that their technique is simple and easily self-applicable by patients. Next, the team wants t bring their suctin-cup design t market. They will have t cnduct mre tests befre starting human clinical trials.

Airbrne (空气传播的) chemicals fund in cmmn fssil fuels are interfering with the pllinatin prcess, new research shws — t the extent that it’s changing the way a flwer smells. And while this might have a minr impact n peple wh like t stp and smell the flwers, the effect n insects — which can n lnger find flwers t land n, especially at night — is cncerning, experts say.
A kind f insect called hawk mth, which Jeff Riffell, a bilgist frm the University f Washingtn, and his clleagues studied, detects the pleasant smell f flwers frm ver a kilmeter away. One f their favrites is the pale evening primrse. In the fields in eastern Washingtn State, the research team bagged the flwers t cllect samples f their scent. In the labratry, they islated the individual chemicals that made up the smell.
The team discvered that certain scent chemicals that mths are attracted t degrade (分解) in the presence f NO3, a strng pllutant that is frmed frm the emissins f cars, cal-fired pwer plants and ther industrial surces. NO3 builds up in the air at night because it is destryed by sunlight. In labratry experiments, tw mth species struggled t fly t the evening primrse scent when expsed t NO₃ levels typically seen at night in cities. When the researchers went back int the field and treated the scent frm bth real and artificial flwers with NO₃, wild mth visits drpped by abut 70%. “The flwers nly blm nce per night, ” Riffel said. “Withut their pllinatrs, there can be a huge change in the plant cmmunity. ”
Regardless, there is nw a cncern fr pllinatrs like mths t becme unable t fulfill their ecsystem duties. Riffell nted that abut 75% f ver 240, 000 dcumented flwering plants need insect interventin — and that abut 70 species f pllinatrs are endangered r threatened.
“In recent years, there has been a grwing interest in ‘sensry pllutin’, ” said Riffell. This pllutin, which arises frm human activity, can change wildlife behavir, he said. Nise pllutin, fr example, has been shwn t impact birdsng and may be linked t an increase in whale strandings(搁浅). Light pllutin, meanwhile, can cnfuse a range f animals including migratry birds and sea turtles.
    12. What d the airbrne chemicals mst affect?
    A. The way flwers smell. B. Peple wh like smelling flwers.
    C. Insects that find flwers t land n.D. The prcess f cllecting flwer scents.
    13. What des the underlined wrd “islated” mean in paragraph 2?
    A. Cmbined.B. Separated.C. Identified.D. Preserved.
    14. Why d the mths land less n flwers?
    A. Scent chemicals break dwn.B. Sunshine damages the scents.
    C. Flwers blssm nly ne time.D. Vehicles release varius pllutants.
    15. What des the passage mainly talk abut?
    A. Hawk mth can nt lcate flwers.
    B. Human activity causes sensry pllutin.
    C. Air pllutin changes the way flwers smell.
    D. Light pllutin destrys the wildlife’s habitats.

    【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“In the fields in eastern Washingtn State, the research team bagged the flwers t cllect samples f their scent. In the labratry(在华盛顿州东部的田地里,研究小组把花装在袋子里,收集它们的气味样本。在实验室里)”以及后文“the individual chemicals that made up the smell(构成花香的单个化学物质)”可知,研究小组先是收集气味,然后在实验室里分离出了构成花香的单个化学物质。故划线词意思为“分离”的意思。故选B。

    【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Airbrne (空气传播的) chemicals fund in cmmn fssil fuels are interfering with the pllinatin prcess, new research shws — t the extent that it’s changing the way a flwer smells.(一项新的研究表明,在普通化石燃料中发现的空气传播的化学物质正在干扰授粉过程——在某种程度上,它正在改变花朵的气味)”结合文章主要讲述了空气传播的化学物质干扰授粉过程,改变了花的气味,所以文章主要讨论的是空气污染改变了花的气味,故选C。
