The pattern f these methyl grups changes as we age, which is believed t increase cellular aging. “Sugars are linked t wrsened health and early disease pssibly mre than any ther fd factr.” c-authr Elissa Epel, a prfessr at the University f Califrnia, said in a statement.
Epel and her clleagues analyzed fd recrds f 342 wmen ver three days. The team then scred each wman’s diet based n hw clsely it fllwed varius established diets: While nutrient-rich diets were tied t slwed aging, added sugars seemed t cntrl the effect. In the study, wmen wh cnsumed higher amunts f added sugars shwed signs f faster cellular aging cmpared t thers, even if they ate ther healthy diet. “Added sugars” refer t sugars that are added t fd during prductin such as thse in sugared drinks and baked gds, as ppsed t the naturally ccurring sugars fund in milk, fruits and vegetables. The new study is ne f the first t demnstrate a link between added sugar cnsumptin and cellular aging, the authrs said.
The team calculated the participants’ ages by lking at the DNA methylatin f cells with samples. These data shwed the links between diet and cellular aging, but they were nly a tip f the iceberg. In fact, mre research is needed t assess hw fllwing these diets might affect aging in the lng run.
