I lved t argue. My fixatin n being right had been a mainstay in my life and had ften stirred up truble in my family; there were mments when my marriage became strained and my kids grew distant. The lngest fight I had was with my parents, and it dragged n fr nearly a year.
My habit seemed immrtal. Until an afternn with my granddaughter pened my eyes t the impact my behaviur was having n the peple arund me. We were playing a bard game when she made a mve that brke the rules. I crrected her, but she ended up making the same mistake again. I read the rules ut lud and asked if she gt it this time. She smiled at me and shk her head. “Grandpa, why are yu s stubbrn?” she asked. “It’s just a game. We’ re here t have fun, aren’t we?” Smething abut her wrds really hit hme. We weren’t there t be right, we were there t enjy urselves — hw t mve the pieces was merely a backdrp. What truly mattered was ur bnd and the mments we shared.
A few days later, my sn came ver fr dinner. During the meal, he shared a viewpint that struck me as baseless. Typically, I wuld have launched myself headfirst int a heated debate with him. But this time, as I parted my lips t respnd, I fund myself ppping a frkful f pie int my muth instead, enjying it quietly. My tlerance surprised me, but what really tk my breath away as I listened t him was a newfund desire t understand him. This experience brught me a jy that far surpassed (超出) the fleeting satisfactin f winning an argument.
In hindsight (事后想), my drive t win hadn’t really been abut seeking the truth, but abut shwing I was better than everyne else. By letting g, I gained way mre than I ever did by pushing back. Nw I recgnise that arguing at the dinner table is much like deciding t drink an extra cup f cffee. It is a matter f self-discipline. I had always understd this cncept in thery, but it tk a seven-year-ld’s interventin fr me t apply it.

Tday’s teaching methds priritize creative prblem-slving ver traditinal frmulas and equatins, but these changes may be critical fr the next generatin. Math might be a cnstant in schl, but hw it’s taught has changed dramatically in recent years. One primary mtivatin fr thse changes - including the 2010 passage f the Cmmn Cre math educatinal standards - is t prepare students fr a mre unpredictable and cmplex future.
Hwever, fr many parents, helping their kids with hmewrk has becme frightening, as mdern methds seem unfamiliar frm what they learned in schl. A 2021 survey shwed mre than half f parents feel hpeless when trying t help their kids with hmewrk.
Cmmn Cre represents that the first time a cmprehensive set f math standards is being taught acrss the United States, says Maria Klawe, president f Math fr America, a nnprfit dedicated t helping math and science teachers. Klawe says these standards dn’t just fcus n frmulas and equatins. Cmmn Cre math emphasizes “prblem-slving, cllabratin, and embedding cncepts in real-life examples,” she says.
Mstly gne are the days when teachers wuld lecture at the frnt f the classrm while students quietly tk ntes. Nw, teachers present a few cncepts, and then students wrk tgether t slve prblems in different ways, Klawe says. The gal is t help kids develp skills they’ll need t navigate a wrld filled with challenges - like climate change, pandemics, and geplitical cnflicts, says Dawun Jyung, a middle schl math teacher at Metrplitan Expeditinary Learning Schl in New Yrk City.
Befre Cmmn Cre math, “answers were valued ver prcess,” says Jyung. But when that apprach is used, “students are unable t apply the cncepts t real-wrld prblems r unable t slve very highly cmplex math prblems,” she says. Under Cmmn Cre, the fcus has shifted. Nw, even mistakes are part f the learning prcess. “When students make a mistake r they struggle, parents see it as a negative thing,” Jyung says. “As math educatrs, we believe prductive struggle is actually gd. That’s where learning happens.”
28. What is a driving frce behind the changes in math educatin accrding t the text?
A. Maintaining teachers’ mtivatin t teach math.
B. Enhancing students’ critical thinking capability.
C. Helping parents with their children’s hmewrk.

In the Mnarch Butterfly Bisphere Reserve, millins f mnarch butterflies find shelter in the yamel fir frests after a tugh migratin frm Canada and the United States dwn t Mexic fr the winter. Nw, as rising temperatures, drughts, and disease threaten the frests f the mnarch reserve, scientists are hping t help these trees migrate.
“We’re ding smething different,” says Sáenz-Rmer, a researcher f the reserve. “If we dn’t d this, the trees in the mnarch reserve are ging t die.” By 2090, the reserve’s frest habitats are expected t deterirate, as temperatures warm. Using a technique called assisted migratin, researchers might be able t mve these trees t the nearby vlcan.
Frests mve naturally; they shift in many directins and elevatins as climate changes. Assisted migratin helps the frest mve mre quickly than it wuld d s naturally. Yu cllect seeds frm a place with a specific climate, like the mnarch reserve, and mve them t an area that will have a similar climate in the future, explains Sáenz-Rmer.
The experiment began in 2017, when Sáenz-Rmer and his team gathered seeds frm yamel fir trees in the Mnarch Butterfly Bisphere Reserve at varius altitudes. Fr tw years, the plants grew in a shade huse and then fr anther year in a nursery at arund 9,800 feet t help them adjust t the altitude. Then, in 2021, they wrked with the lcal cmmunity t plant the seedlings under “nurse plants”, which prtected them frm difficult cnditins. In 2023, six years after planting the seeds, they fund that at tw f thse heights, 11,800 and 12,400 feet, nearly 70 percent f the seedlings had survived even at the higher elevatin.
“These types f experiments are tremendusly imprtant,” says Sally Aitken, wh wasn’t invlved in the study. Hwever, assisted migratin utside f a tree’s nrmal range cmes with cncerns, Aitken says. Oyamel firs dn’t nrmally grw at this height n Nevad de Tluca’s slpes. Mving a species culd have unintended eclgical fallut fr ther species present in that ecsystem.
Fr nw, in Mexic, Sáenz-Rmer hpes this new study cnvinces cnservatinists and gvernment fficials that assisted migratin can establish new ptential wintering sites fr the mnarch butterflies.
32. What des the underlined wrd “deterirate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Frm.B. Expand.C. Wrsen.D. Melt.
33. What can we learn abut assisted migratin frm the experiment?
A. It has achieved sme intended targets.B. It expands the species f nurse plants.
C. It takes way t much time and effrt.D. It saved mnarch butterflies wrldwide.
34. What might assisted migratin lead t accrding t Aitken?
A. Presence f new species.B. Change f the lcal weather.
C. Reductin f Oyamel firs.D. Disturbance f the ecsystem.
35. What des Sáenz-Rmer suggest Mexican fficials d?
A. Build mre natural reserves fr the mnarch butterflies.
B. Supprt assisted migratin t prtect mnarch butterflies.
C. Learn mre relevant knwledge abut insect cnservatin.
D. Cnvince cnservatinists t establish bservatinal centers.
