    The evidence, published yesterday in the Jurnal f Zlgy, centers n a ppulatin f breeding (繁殖) frgs in Italy. It seems that, a few years ag, these creatures had suddenly escaped frm their hme five days befre an earthquake struck their breeding grund.
    The frgs’ ability t sense the earthquake is nt fully understd, but 96 percent f male frgs escaped and returned a day after the danger had passed. This discvery baffled Dr. Rachel Grant, wh hadn’t set ut t learn abut frgs’ reactins t earthquakes, but t study the effect f the lunar cycle n them. She nw believes that frgs may be able t sense sme signs and use them as an early-warning system fr earthquakes.
    Frgs are nt the nly creatures brn with an unusual pwer t predict natural disasters. In 2004, elephants in Thailand made lud nises befre the tsunami hit, while bats in Sri Lanka flew arund in anxiety befre the disaster.

She calls it her "grit scale (量表)."

Peple wh finished cllege scred higher n the grit scale than peple wh quit befre graduatin. Peple wh went t graduate schl after cllege scred even higher.
    She then did anther study with cllege students. Duckwrth wanted t see hw intelligence and grit influenced perfrmance in schl. S she cmpared scres n cllege-entrance exams, which measure IQ, t schl grades and scres n the grit scale. Students with higher grades tended t have mre grit. That’s nt surprising. Getting gd grades takes bth smarts and hard wrk.
    But sme peple cunter that this grit means success. Amng thse peple is Marcus Crede, a prfessr at Iwa State University in Ames. He recently pled the results f 88studies n grit. Tgether, thse studies tested nearly 67, 000 peple. And grit did nt predict success, Crede fund.
