The 97-year-ld btanist, Margaret Bradshaw, is the chief caretaker f Teesdale’s rarest flwers. “Everything abut Teesdale is unique,” says Bradshaw with pride — and the authrity f smene wh has just written a 288-page bk n the subject. Bradshaw has been recrding rare plants here since the early 1950s and has witnessed great decreases. Her data was the first t prve that — and the need t d smething abut it.
The main reasn fr the decrease f these plants is an unusual ne. The number f sheep in Teesdale had been reduced by half by 2000, as the uplands were generally believed there were t many sheep. As a result f her findings and her wrk with farmers wh herd the land — as well as Natural England, which manages it — sheep numbers are increasing and the timing f herding is being carefully managed. This has led t the partial recvery f sme plants.
At 93, she set up Teesdale Special Flra Research and Cnservatin Trust t recrd rare plants. A keen hrse rider, at 95, she did a 55-mile hrse jurney acrss Teesdale, raising almst $ 10,000 fr the Trust. When asked abut the secret t lngevity, “Just keep ging,” she says.

The last wrds f her bk speak t this endless lss. “This is ur heritage, this unique plant species, mine and yurs,” she writes. “In spite f trying, I have failed t prevent its decrease, nw it is up t yu.”

Scientists nce cnsidered sleep t be like a shadw getting drawn ver a windw between the brain and the utside wrld: when the shadw is clsed, the brain stps reacting t utside stimuli (刺激).

While they were sleeping, participants were repeatedly asked t frwn r smile. All f them respnded accurately t at least 70% f these tips. Overall respnse rates were higher fr all participants during REM (rapid eye mvement) sleep, when the deepest sleep ccurs but the brain remains quite active, than during ther sleep stages.
This study is part f a larger advance in the field f sleep research, says Mélanie Strauss,a cgnitive scientist in Brussels. Researchers are mving away frm mnitring sleep mainly with EEG (脑电图) and twards “fine grained” appraches that cmbine EEG with varius tasks and stimuli — a strategy that culd help t cast light n specific diseases r cnditins, she says.

A. By mving their face and eyes.B. By repeating the questins.
C By prviding accurate answers.D. By talking abut their dream.
14. What can we learn abut the participants in the latest study?
A. They like sleeping in the daytime. B. They remember their dreams clearly.
C. They d exactly as they’re tld during sleep. D. They shw higher respnse in the deepest sleep.
