A typical exercise at WriteGirl is mic and rant, a 30-secnd sessin befre writing fr each girl. As a vehicle fr teens t get their ideas ut, it empwers girls t explre anything meaningful t them. “Nt the flwery language, r rather, cmplicated expressins that sund skillful, but mre f the natural, this is what I’m thinking and what I’m feeling.” Taylr said.
Sansa’s mentr Danyella Wilder is attracted by the lng-term nature f mentring at WriteGirl. What d yu get when yu paint a pair f eyes n a cw’s rump (臀部)? The answer is that yu’ll get an apprach t scaring predatrs (捕食者) away. This simple trick is called the “i-cw” slutin. The eyes painted n cws’ rumps can trick certain predatrs, such as lins and lepards.
An experiment by Australia and Btswana cmpared hw predatrs reacted t herds that had eye paintings n their rumps, nes that had “xs”, and sme withut any paintings at all. Over a fur-year perid, researchers fund that 15 ut f the 835 unpainted cws were killed by predatrs, 4 f the 543 cws with “xs” died, but every single ne f the 683 animals with eye paintings n their rumps was still alive.
Neil Jrdan, a bilgist in Australia, first came up with the methd. While watching a lin hunting a deer, he nticed smething interesting. “Lins usually mve slwly and quietly t their prey, get clse and jump n them. But when the deer nticed the lin and the lin realized it had been seen, it gave up n the hunt,” he said. Later, he wrked with a lcal farmer t test his idea ver a perid f 10 weeks, and like the mst recent results, all f the cws with painted eyes survived.
Despite the psitive results, Dr. Jrdan says the methd isn’t a sure slutin. He says if farmers painted eyes n the backsides f all their cws, predatrs might finally figure ut that the eyes aren’t real. Therefre, further research shuld be dne t prve whether it is effective.
In spite f this, he’s still hping that the “i-cw” will becme a widely used technique t at least reduce predatr’s attacks. “I think the farmers are just happy with this,” Dr. Jrdan says. “After all, all they need is a paint pt, paint brush and a little bit f artistic talent.”
8. What is “i-cw” slutin intended fr?
A. Prtecting cws frm being attacked.B. Leading predatrs t the farm.
C. Training cws t ntice predatrs.D. Recgnizing cws quickly.
9. What d we knw abut the experiment in paragraph 2?
A. Mst f the unpainted cws were killed.
B. The cws with “eyes” n the rump survived.
C. A small number f cws with “xs” survived.
D. Mre than twenty painted cws were killed.
10. What might be a cause f the “i-cw” slutin’s failing t wrk?
A. Predatrs perceive the tricks.
B. Predatrs get clse t the cws.
C. There is mre than ne predatr.
D. The farmers lack basic painting skills.
11. Why des Dr. Jrdan think that farmers will favr his methd?
A. It is a widely recgnized apprach.B. It fllws their traditinal practice.
C. It is easy and cheap t carry ut.D. It has prved the mst effective.
D
Scientists are pr frecasters f the future. But tw trends can be cnfidently predicted. First, the wrld will get mre crwded. There will be mre than 9 billin peple by 2050. Secnd, the wrld will get warmer and sme gvernments wn’t priritize the lng-term measures needed t deal with climate change, even thugh science ffers us a rad map t a lw-carbn future.
That’s why we shuld be prmters f new technlgy — withut it the wrld can’t prvide the fd and sustainable energy needed fr an expanding ppulatin. But we shuld als be cautius, as new technlgies, such as AI, may be hard t cntrl.
AI will undubtedly becme mre intrusive (侵入) in the future. Recrds f ur mvements, health and financial transactins will be stred in the clud. The data may be used fr justifiable reasns, such as prtein flding and drug develpment, r t warn us f initial health risks, but its availability t Internet cmpanies is already shifting the balance f pwer frm gvernments t glbal-scale crpratins.
Actually, it’s beynd Earth that AI has the mst enrmus ptential. Humans may have established bases beynd Earth by the year 2100. But dn’t ever expect mass emigratin (移民) frm Earth. It’s a false belief that space ffers an escape frm ur prblems. Dealing with climate change n Earth is a piece f cake cmpared t terrafrming (将……地球化) Mars.
Nevertheless, we shuld cheer n these brave human space adventurers. They’ll be ill-adapted t a Martian habitat, s they’ll have a super mtive t redesign themselves. It’s they, nt thse f us adapted t life n Earth, wh will pineer the pst-human era. If pst-humans make the shift frm flesh and bld t fully artificial intelligences, they wn’t need an atmsphere r even gravity, s it’s in deep space — nt even n Mars — that nn-bilgical “brains” may develp pwers that we can’t imagine. They may end up being mentally different frm us. AI culd jump-start a huge emigratin and thus ever mre cmplex intelligence spreads thrugh the universe.
But let’s refcus frm the science fictin f the far future clser t the here and nw. This century is special. It’s the first, in Earth’s 4.5-billin-year histry where ne species — urs — hlds the planet’s future in its hands. Our intelligence culd initiate billins f years f pst-human evlutin, even mre amazing than that which led t us. On the ther hand, humans culd cause bilgical, envirnmental r cyber catastrphes that freclse all this ptential.
If science is t save us, we need t think glbally, sensibly and lng-term — empwered by science, but guided by values that science alne can’t prvide.
12. Why des the authr mentin the tw trends in the first paragraph?
A. T respnd t gvernment’s decisins.
B. T shw scientists’ knwledge and skills.
C. T highlight the challenges t scientists.
D. T present a call fr scientific advances.
13. What can be learned abut AI accrding t this passage?
A It can put an end t climate change.
B. It can make mass human emigratin pssible.
C It can cause ptential risks frm big cmpanies.
D. It can bring abut the cmpetitin amng natins.
14. Which f the fllwing statements will the authr prbably agree with?
A. Pst-humans will repeat the histry f humans.
B. Cmplex intelligence will destry the universe.
C. Fully artificial intelligences may inhabit uter space.
D. Nn-bilgical brains may invite unfreseen disasters.
15. Which wuld be the best title fr the passage?
A. Is it pssible t predict the future?
B. Culd science and technlgy save us?
C. Is it difficult t emigrate t uter space?
D. Will artificial intelligence replace humans?

Nameless Faces
Fr abut a year, my vyage t and frm wrk each day included a ten-minute walk thrugh the heart f dwntwn area. As with mst large cities, the hmeless ppulatin in my city ften gathered n dwntwn crners, asking pedestrians fr their spare change. Like many busy citizens, I had learned t ignre the nameless faces begging fr mney each day. But wh wuld have thught that the first persn t change the way I viewed humanity wuld be a cmpletely stranger? My verall utlk n peple tk a 180-degree turn in less than ten minutes.
I remember hw particularly cld the weather had been that day. I saw ne man sitting against a building, hlding a white cup in frnt f him. His shaky vice reached ut t me as I hurried past.
“Spare sme change?” he asked. “I wuld really appreciate it.”
I didn’t even bther lking up at his nameless face. “Srry n mney n me tday,” I made a lie as usual quickly, my eyes fixed n the grund ahead.
Just a few feet past him, I slipped n the icy pavement and fell hard. I lay there fr several mments, stunned and wndering if I had brken my leg.
“Are yu all right?” A vice came frm abve me. I lked up and it was the man I had just rushed past, cncern written n his face. He reached dwn, trying t ffer help. “Yu shuld get that checked by a dctr. This bus ges past the hspital,” he said, pinting t the bus sign abve me.

A mix f emtins swelled within me — gratitude fr his help, embarrassment fr my earlier ignrance, and anxiety abut getting t wrk n time. Fr a mment, I met his gaze, unsure f what t say. Then, a sudden realizatin crssed his face.
