The sun rises ver the Crdillera muntain ranges in the Philippines, lighting up the

Sme peple use their brains t create art. Others use them t slve math prblems.

The brain has tw halves called hemispheres(半球). Althugh the left and right sides
lk similar, they cntrl different functins. The left side management n the right side
f the bdy, and the right side des the ppsite. This has led sme peple t suggest that
the tw halves are specialized. This became a very ppular idea abut hw the brain wrks.
    But it isn’t really true.
The idea f left and right brains began with neurscientist Rger Sperry in the 1950s.
He studied hw the tw sides cmmunicate thrugh a bundle f nerve fibers (神经纤维)
called the crpus callsum. Dctrs fund that cutting this cnnectin culd help with
epilepsy (癫痫). This surprising result led Sperry t wrk with patients wh had gtten
    their crpus callsum cut.
Sperry asked these vlunteers t cver ne eye at a time. Then he shwed them a
series f wrds. Peple culd nly recall wrds they viewed with their right eyes, nt their
left. When shwn bjects, peple culd draw things they saw with their left eyes, but
culd nt describe them in wrds. These results suggested that the ability t use and
understand language is based in the left side f the brain. Sperry’s research changed ur
    understanding f the brain.
Tday, we have advanced tls like MRI that help us see hw the brain wrks.
“Brain imaging shws that everything is intercnnected,” says Michelle Ellefsn, a
neurscientist, wh wrks at the University f Cambridge in England. “The thinking nw
is that althugh there may be ne area largely respnsible fr sme srt f skill, it desn’t
    wrk n its wn.”
    S next time a test r a friend tells yu that yu’re “left-brained” r “right-brained”,
remember: Yu have yur whle brain t thank fr all the amazing things yu can d.
