she wasn’t weak, and that changed her whle mindset,” her father said.
In preparing fr the 24-hur race, Milla trained 20 hurs a week fr 90 days, ding exercise in the gym fr 4

It turns ut that humans aren’t the nly nes taking mathematics tests. A grup f cgnitive (认 知 的 )
scientists are training bees t perfrm simple additin and subtractin (减法).
Fr the experiment, the scientists lured individual bees with sugar water. “She flies back t the hive, gives it
t the ther bees, and tw minutes later she’ll cme back and d it again,” Dyer said, a scientist frm RMIT
University in Melburne, Australia. They taught and tested 14 bees ver the curse f the experiment — ne bee
    at a time.
T learn the rules, a bee first wuld be shwn cards printed with a number f shapes in ne f tw clrs:
blue, if they were suppsed t add ne t the shapes n the card, r yellw, if they were meant t subtract ne
shape. Then, the bee wuld chse an answer t the prblem by flying t ne f tw presented slutins. If it chse
well, it fund itself near a slutin f delicius sugar water. If it chse prly, hwever, it wuld be punished with
a bad-tasting drink. The researchers fund that each bee picked the crrect answer in bth additin and subtractin
trials abut 70percent f the time.
Dyer said, “Prblem-slving requires bth lng-term memry and shrt-term memry. Lng-term memry
allws the bees t remember that blue and yellw equate t separate mathematical rules. Shrt-term memry lets
them recall the actual numbers in a particular prblem.”
“It is assumed that humans are very cmplex, and there’s a decreasing level f cmplexity ging away frm
humans,” said Muth, an animal cngnitin researcher wh wasn’t invlved in this study. But in fact, cmplex
awareness, like the mathematical prblems slved by bees, can be made up f relativlely simple cmpnents.
That desn’t explain why bees might have evlved the ability t figure ut mathematical prblems, thugh.
One pssibility is that bees didn’t evlve t d additin and subtractin. They just evlved t be smart enugh t
    7 / 11

    figure it ut.
Dyer said that bserving a tiny animal with a brain that has less than a millin neurns (神经元) learn a very
cmplex task makes him think, “Ww, what can humans achieve?”
46.What are the scientists training bees t d in the experiment?
A.Flying n blue and yellw cards.
    B.Adding shapes t different cards.
C.Slving simple mathematical prblems. D.Tasting water f tw flavrs.
47.What wuld happen if the bees chse the wrng answer t the prblem?
A.They wuld be punished with a bad-tasting drink. B.They wuld be treated with sugar drink.
C.They wuld be permitted t leave the hive.
48.What rle des memry play in prblem-slving?
A.Lng-term memry plays a bigger part.
D.They wuld be given a beautiful shape card.
    B.Lng-term memry cntributes t recalling.
    C.Shrt-term memry facilitates remembering.
D.Shrt-term memry is as imprtant as lng-term memry.
49.What can we learn frm the passage?
A.Bees are as cmplex as man in many aspects.
B.Bees are by nature gd at mathematics.
C.Cmplex awareness can cnsist f simple cmpnents.
D.Bees learn t slve maths prblems under certain pressure.
50.What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A.Human achievements can be limitless. B.Human brains deserve gd study.
    C.Humans must fully develp neurns.
    D.Humans are gd at bservatin.
    D
Is frgiveness against ur human nature? T answer ur questin, we need t ask a further questin: What is
the essence f ur humanity? Fr the sake f simplicity, peple cnsider tw distinctly different views f humanity.
The first view invlves dminance and pwer. In an early paper n the psychlgy f frgiveness, Drll (1984)
made the interesting claim that humans’ essential nature is mre aggressive than frgiving allws. Thse wh
frgive are against their basic nature, much t their harm. In his pinin, frgivers are cmprmising their
well-being as they ffer mercy t thers, wh might then take advantage f them.
The secnd view invlves the theme f cperatin, mutual respect, and even lve as the basis f wh we
    8 / 11

are as humans. Researchers find that t fully grw as human beings, we need bth t receive lve frm and ffer
lve t thers. Withut lve, ur cnnectins with a wide range f individuals in ur lives can fall apart. Even
cmmn sense strngly suggests that the will t pwer ver thers des nt make fr harmnius interactins. Fr
example, hw well has slavery wrked as a mde f scial harmny?
Frm this secnd viewpint f wh we are as humans, frgiveness plays a key rle in the bilgical and
psychlgical integrity f bth individuals and cmmunities because ne f the utcmes f frgiveness, shwn
thrugh scientific studies, is the decreasing f hatred and the restratin f harmny. Frgiveness can break the
cycle f anger. At least t the extent the peple frm whm yu are estranged accept yur lve and frgiveness and
are prepared t make the required adjustments. Frgiveness can heal relatinships and recnnect peple.
As an imprtant nte, when we take a Classical philsphical perspective, that f Aristtle, we see the
distinctin between ptentiality and actuality. We are nt necessarily brn with the capacity t frgive, but instead
with the ptential t learn abut it and t grw in ur ability t frgive. The actuality f frgiving, its actual
apprpriatin in cnflict situatins, develps with practice.
51.What is Drll’s idea abut frgiveness?
A.Peple shuld ffer mercy t thers.
B.Aggressive peple shuld learn t frgive.
