France, which prides itself as the glbal innvatr f fashin, has decided its fashin industry has
lst an abslute right t define physical beauty fr wman. Its lawmakers gave preliminary apprval last week t a law that wuld make it a crime t emply ultra-thin mdels n runways. The parliament als agreed t ban websites that “incite excessive thinness” by prmting extreme dieting.
Such measures have a cuple f uplifting mtives. They suggest beauty shuld nt be defined by lks that end up impinging n health. That’s a start. And the ban n ultra-thin mdels seems t g beynd prtecting mdels frm starving themselves t death –as sme have dne. It tells the fashin industry that it must take respnsibility fr the signal it sends wmen, especially teenage girls, abut the scial tape –measure they must use t determine their individual wrth.
The bans, if fully enfrced, wuld suggest t wman (and many men) that they shuld nt let thers be arbiters f their beauty. And perhaps faintly, they hint that peple shuld lk t intangible qualities like character and intellect rather than dieting their way t size zer r wasp-waist physiques.
The French measures, hwever, rely t much n severe punishment t change a culture that still regards beauty as skin-deep-and bne-shwing. Under the law, using a fashin mdel that des nt meet a gvernment-defined index f bdy mass culd result in a $85,000 fine and six mnths in prisn.
The fashin industry knws it has an inherent prblem in fcusing n material adrnment and idealized bdy types. In Denmark, the United States, and a few ther cuntries, it is trying t set vluntary standard fr mdels and fashin images that rely mre n peer pressure fr enfrcement.
In cntrast t France’s actins, Denmark’s fashin industry agreed last mnth n rules and sanctins regarding the age, health, and ther characteristics f mdels. The newly revised Danish Fashin Ethical Charter clearly states:“ We are aware f and take respnsibility fr the impact the fashin industry has n bdy ideals, especially n yung peple.” The charter’s main tl f enfrcement is t deny access fr designers and mdeling agencies t Cpenhagen. Fashin Week, which is run by the Danish Fashin Institute. But in general it relies n a name-and –shame methd f cmpliance.
Relying n ethical persuasin rather than law t address the misuse f bdy ideals may be the best step. Even better wuld be t help elevate ntins f beauty beynd the material standards f a particular industry.
24. Accrding t the first paragraph, what wuld happen in France?
A. Physical beauty wuld be redefined.B. New runways wuld be cnstructed.
C. Websites abut dieting wuld thrive.D. The fashin industry wuld decline.

The decisin f the New Yrk Philharmnic t hire Alan Gilbert as its next music directr has
been the talk f the classical-music wrld ever since the sudden annuncement f his appintment in 2009. Fr the mst part, the respnse has been favrable, t say the least. “Hray! At last!” wrte Anthny Tmmasini, a sber-sided classical-music critic.
One f the reasns why the appintment came as such a surprise, hwever, is that Gilbert is cmparatively little knwn. Even Tmmasini, wh had advcated Gilbert’s appintment in the Times, calls him “an unpretentius musician with n air f the frmidable cnductr abut him.” As a descriptin f the next music directr f an rchestra that has hithert been led by musicians like Gustav Mahler and Pierre Bulez, that seems likely t have struck at least sme Times readers as faint praise.
Fr my part, I have n idea whether Gilbert is a great cnductr r even a gd ne. T be sure, he perfrms an impressive variety f interesting cmpsitins, but it is nt necessary fr me t visit Avery Fisher Hall, r anywhere else, t hear interesting rchestral music. All I have t d is t g t my CD shelf, r bt up my cmputer and dwnlad still mre recrded music frm iTunes.
Devted cncertgers wh reply that recrdings are n substitute fr live perfrmance are missing the pint. Fr the time, attentin, and mney f the art-lving public, classical instrumentalists must cmpete nt nly with pera huses, dance trupes, theater cmpanies, and museums, but als with the recrded perfrmances f the great classical musicians f the 20thcentury. These recrdings are cheap, available everywhere, and very ften much higher in artistic quality than tday’s live perfrmances; mrever, they can be “cnsumed” at a time and place f the listener’s chsing. The widespread availability f such recrdings has thus brught abut a crisis in the institutin f the traditinal classical cncert.
One pssible respnse is fr classical perfrmers t prgram attractive new music that is nt yet available n recrd. Gilbert’s wn interest in new music has been widely nted: Alex Rss, a classical-music critic, has described him as a man wh is capable f turning the Philharmnic int “a markedly different, mre vibrant rganizatin.” But what will be the nature f that difference? Merely expanding the rchestra’s repertire will nt be enugh. If Gilbert and the Philharmnic are t succeed, they must first change the relatinship between America’s ldest rchestra and the new audience it hpes t attract.
28. Frm Paragraph 1, what can we learn frm Gilbert’s appintment?
A. It incurred criticism.B. It raised suspicin.
C. It received acclaim.D. It arused curisity.
29. The authr believes that the devted cncertgers .
A. ignre the expenses f live perfrmances. B. reject mst kinds f recrded perfrmances.
C. exaggerate the variety f live perfrmances.D. verestimate the value f live perfrmances.
30. Accrding t the text, which f the fllwing is true f recrdings?
A. They are ften inferir t live cncerts in quality.
B. They are easily accessible t the general public.
C. They help imprve the quality f music.
D. They have nly cvered masterpieces.
31. Hw des the authr feel abut Gilbert’s rle in revitalizing the Philharmnic?
A. Dubtful.B. Enthusiastic.
C. Cnfident.D. Puzzled.
D
The rugh guide t marketing success used t be that yu gt what yu paid fr. N lnger. While traditinal “paid” media—such as televisin cmmercials and print advertisements – still play a majr rle, cmpanies tday can explit many alternative frms f media. Cnsumers passinate abut a prduct may create “earned” media by willingly prmting it t friends, and a cmpany may leverage “wned” media by sending e-mail alerts abut prducts and sales t custmers registered with its Web site. The way cnsumers nw apprach the prcess f making purchase decisins means that marketing’s impact stems frm a brad range f factrs beynd cnventinal paid media.
Paid and wned media are cntrlled by marketers prmting their wn prducts. Fr earned media, such marketers act as the initiatr fr users’ respnses. But in sme cases, ne marketer’s wned media becme anther marketer’s paid media – fr instance, when an e-cmmerce retailer sells ad space n its Web site. We define such sld media as wned media whse traffic is s strng that ther rganizatins place their cntent r e-cmmerce engines within that envirnment. This trend, which we believe is still in its infancy, effectively began with retailers and travel prviders such as airlines and htels and will n dubt g further. Jhnsn & Jhnsn, fr example, has created BabyCenter, a stand-alne media prperty that prmtes cmplementary and even cmpetitive prducts. Besides generating incme, the presence f ther marketers makes the site seem bjective, gives cmpanies pprtunities t learn valuable infrmatin abut the appeal f ther cmpanies’ marketing, and may help expand user traffic fr all cmpanies cncerned.
The same dramatic technlgical changes that have prvided marketers with mre (and mre diverse) cmmunicatins chices have als increased the risk that passinate cnsumers will vice their pinins in quicker, mre visible, and much mre damaging ways. Such hijacked media are the ppsite f earned media: an asset r campaign becmes hstage t cnsumers, ther stakehlders, r activists wh make negative allegatins abut a brand r prduct. Members f scial netwrks, fr instance, are learning that they can hijack media t apply pressure n the businesses that riginally created them.
32. When can Cnsumers create “earned” media?
A. Obsessed with nline shpping at certain Web sites.
B. Inspired by prduct-prmting e-mails sent t them.
C. Eager t help their friends prmte quality prducts.
D. Enthusiastic abut recmmending their favrite prducts.
33. What can we say abut sld media feature accrding t Paragraph 2?
A. A safe business envirnment.B. Randm cmpetitin.
C. Strng user traffic.D. Flexibility in rganizatin.
34. What can we infer abut earned media in Paragraph 3?
A. Invite cnstant cnflicts with passinate cnsumers.
B. Can be used t prduce negative effects in marketing
C. May be respnsible fr fiercer cmpetitin.
D. Deserve all the negative cmments abut them.
35. Which f the fllwing is the text mainly abut?
A. Alternatives t cnventinal paid media.B. Cnflict between hijacked and earned media.
C. Dminance f hijacked media. D. Ppularity f wned media.

This is partly because universities cntinue t prduce ever mre PhDs. ____39 : English departments awarded mre bachelr’s degrees in 1970-71 than they did 20 years later. Fewer students require fewer teachers. S, at the end f a decade f thesis-writing, many humanities students leave the prfessin t d smething fr which they have nt been trained.
One reasn why it is hard t design and teach such curses is that they cut acrss the insistence by tp American universities that liberal-arts educatin and prfessinal educatin shuld be kept separate, taught in different schls. 40 . Althugh mre than half f Harvard undergraduates end up in law, medicine r business, future dctrs and lawyers must study a nn-specialist liberal-arts degree befre embarking n a prfessinal qualificatin.

After graduating frm cllege, I wrked as a salesman fr a pian cmpany. We advertised ur pians in small twn newspapers and then, when we received many replies, we wuld lad ur little trucks, drive int the area and sell the pians t thse wh had replied. Every time we advertised, we wuld receive a reply n a pstcard which said,“Please bring me a new pian fr my little granddaughter. It must be red mahgany (红木). I can pay$10 a mnth with my egg mney.” Of curse, we culd nt sell a new pian fr $10 a mnth. N finance cmpany wuld carry a cntract with payments that small, s we ignred her pstcards. One day, hwever, I happened t be in that area calling n ther replies, and ut f curisity I decided t meet the ld lady. I fund pretty much what I expected: The ld lady lived in a ne-rm cabin in the middle f a cttn field. The cabin had a dirt flr and there were chickens in the huse. Obviusly, she culd nt have qualified t purchase anything n credit—n car, n phne, n real jb, nthing but a rf ver her head. I culd see daylight thrugh the rf in several places. Her little granddaughter was abut 10, bareft and wearing a feed sack (麻布袋) dress. I explained t the ld lady that we culd nt sell a new pian fr $10 a mnth and that she shuld stp writing t us every time she saw ur advertisement. I drve away heartsick, but my advice had n effect—she still sent us the same pstcard every six weeks. Always wanting a new pian, red mahgany, she swre she wuld never miss a $10 payment.
