谁是环绕地球的第一人？1519年9月20日，麦哲伦在西班牙王室的支持下，在哥伦布探寻的新航线的基础上，率领由265名水手和5艘船组成的船队，从西班牙的塞韦尔港出发，横渡大西洋，沿巴西东海岸南下。第二年10月，他们穿过南美洲南端的海峡，继续向西航行。由于沿途风平浪静，所以麦哲伦把这片大海叫做太平海（即太平洋）。他们继续航行，历经艰辛，终于在1521年3月到达菲律宾群岛。不幸的是，麦哲伦在岛上干涉当地人之间的内讧，被当地居民杀害。伙伴们带着他的遗愿于1522年9月7日回到了西班牙。麦哲伦环球航行是世界航线史上的一大成就，不仅开辟了欧洲与亚洲的新航线，开启了大航海时代，带动了航海文明的崛起，沟通了东西方的海上贸易，传播了文明和技术，更为地圆说提供了确凿的证据。

达伽马出生于葡萄牙的一个航海世家。他从小接受系统的航海和天文知识的教育，是当时少数拥有航海知识的宫廷大臣。当时，欧洲对外贸易发展迅速。大量商人、航海家冒着生命危险远航大西洋，试图开辟到东方的新航路。葡萄牙国王也多次派遣船队，试图探索一条通向印度的航道，并到达了非洲最南端的好望角。但因风暴太强，无功而返。1492年，哥伦布发现美洲的消息传遍了欧洲。面对西班牙咄咄逼人的海上霸权，葡萄牙决心加快探索通往印度的航线。这一重大使命就交给了年富力强，富有冒险精神的贵族子弟——达伽马。1497年7月8日，达伽马率领四艘小型船共计170多名水手，踏上了探索之路。1498年1月，达伽马抵达了东非的莫桑比克海域。1499年9月9日，达伽马回到里斯本，只剩下2条船和55名水手。达伽马开拓出了一条到印度的新航线，受到葡萄牙国王的大量赏赐，并赐尊称为“印度洋上的海军上将”。之后，达伽马后续又进行了几次航行，并在劫掠的过程中因疾病死于印度。达伽马通过自身的专业知识，最终开辟了一条从西欧经好望角到亚洲的海上航线，开创了世界历史的新纪元，同时也是欧洲殖民者对东方国家进行殖民掠夺的开端。在以后几个世纪中，由于西方列强接踵而来，印度洋沿岸各国以及西太平洋各国相继沦为殖民地和半殖民地。
