In my mid-20s, I fund myself in ne f the mst terrible relatinships f my life. Lking fr a slutin, I bught my first self-help bk, which prmised I culd be healed (治愈) f anything if I gt rid f my limiting beliefs. I finished it in days, and fund even thugh I was still the same depressed, brke, single mther, I was fascinated.
Over the next 15 years, I bught hundreds f self-help bks, curses, and apps, and fllwed every self-styled persnal imprvement adviser n scial media, hping t find happiness, cnfidence, and lve. Sme advice was gentle and bvius: “Talk kindly t yurself; get enugh sleep.” Others were dangerus, encuraging me t spend mre mney than I culd affrd t shw wealth r t ignre my health prblems t feel healthy.
After my father’s death in 2022, my dependency grew strnger. I spent a large amunt f time reading abut hw t grieve (哀悼) and get thrugh the pain, but nt ding the things that wuld actually make me feel better: sitting with my feelings, allwing myself t cry, and prcessing the lss. Althugh I fllwed the guidance, nthing imprved. I culdn’t help but feel that nt achieving results was my persnal failing, rather than the industry’s brken prmises.
Gradually, I realized that instead f helping me, the advice was making me feel wrse. And a deep cnversatin with a lved ne made me recgnize that in trying t change my life, I was attempting t change aspects f myself that were ut f my cntrl. Instead f fcusing n wh I wanted t becme, I knew I had t quit self-help t learn and accept wh I really was.
Since quitting self-help, I’ve realized that fcusing all yur energy n self-imprvement can drain(消耗) the jy ut f life. It makes happiness cnditinal: nly when I have gt t a certain stage can I feel cntentment; nly when I lk that way can I be lved. It can als stp yu frm uncnditinally accepting yur imperfectly perfect self. After a lng time, I finally understand that perhaps I never needed fixing at all.

When geneticist Elizabeth Clare placed 70 small filters (过滤器) arund England’s Hamertn Z Park last year, she intended fr the traps t cllect DNA frm the sky. What she didn’t knw, hwever, was that led by Kristine Bhmann, anther team was cnducting a similar experiment in the Cpenhagen Z.
Wild animals are usually studied indirectly thrugh clues that they leave behind, like fur, feathers r waste. That means certain animals — especially the small, fast and shy nes — are ften missed in traditinal wildlife surveys. Because all living rganisms shed DNA int the air f the envirnment they live in, the tw research grups hped they culd use thse genetic traces, called eDNA, t find ut what animals frequent an area.
One f the biggest challenges f wrking with airbrne eDNA is aviding cntaminatin (污染) frm ther surces, which culd muddle(弄乱)results.“The z becmes this perfect envirnment where we knw everything that we’re detecting has nly ne pssible surce,” says Clare. “My lab desn’t handle tiger DNA ever, s if we’re detecting a tiger, there is n ther surce.”
T see if eDNA culd be detected in the air, bth teams placed filters in different z enclsures, including bth indr and utdr exhibits. Bhmann’s grup cllected 40 air samples in three lcatins arund the Cpenhagen Z. They als tested three different air sampling devices. Clare’s grup tk a similar apprach but instead used just ne type f air pump.
Thugh bth grups were ptimistic that their idea culd wrk, they were still shcked at their results. In the 40 samples that Bhmann’s grup cllected, they successfully fund 49 species including mammals, birds, reptiles and fish. “We had n idea that this wuld actually wrk s well,” says Bhmann. Clare’s team als identified DNA frm mre than tw dzen different species f animals frm their samples, including tigers, lemurs and dinges.
“It’s really exciting lking at hw bth f these papers have prduced the same results,” says Mark Jhnsn, wh studies eDNA at Texas Tech University. While hpeful abut the future f airbrne eDNA, Jhnsn ntes huge leaps need t be made befre the techniques used in the z can be applied in the field. Cllecting eDNA in the wild adds a hst f new variables. “The next step is t take it frm the z int the natural envirnment and see what we find there,” says Jhnsn.
28. What did the tw teams f scientists try t d?
A. T study z animals’ DNA in detail.
B. T detect animals frm DNA in the air.
C. T imprve z envirnments fr animals.
D. T cmpare DNAs f different z animals.
29. Why did the scientists chse the z fr their study?
A. Because the air there was much cleaner.
B. Because there were many useful resurces in it.
C. Because they expected t find a tiger DNA there.
D. Because it culd ensure the accuracy f the results.
30. What can we learn abut the tw grups’ findings?
A. They needed t be further prved.
B. They depended greatly n the devices.
C. They were far beynd the scientists’ expectatins.
D. They failed t supprt the scientists’ idea abut eDNA.
31. What’s Mark Jhnsn’s attitude twards the future f eDNA?
A. Cautiusly ptimistic. B. Mildly dubtful.
C. Smewhat ppsed. D. Cmpletely supprtive.

There’s an intrinsic (固有的) desire amngst mst peple t explre ur planet. There’s this sense in mdern sciety that smehw we will find a better existence r we’ll find happiness by ging n hliday. I think we’ve almst been cnditined t becme turists, t the extent that a lt f peple engage in turism withut actually cnsidering why they’re ding s.
There are plenty f peple wh will g t the same place every year, because they’re cmfrtable and familiar with it. Peple are experiencing less and less the places they are at. They might be there in bdy, but nt necessarily in mind, because a lt f peple are cnstantly thinking: “Hw am I ging t present myself t my scial media grup back hme thrugh my psts n Facebk r Instagram?”
But this is just ne side f the prblem. On the ther side, ur travel has taken a tll n the envirnment. It is reprted that the carbn emissins frm air travel accunted fr 2.5% f glbal emissins in 2019, and this figure may triple (增至三倍) by 2050.
I admit that there has been a cnsiderable increase in peple’s awareness abut the envirnment. And sme peple say that this can eventually lead t a shift in ur behavir as turists. Hwever, I can’t share their ptimism. A lt f research has been dne int the extent t which turists are willing t adapt their behavir. And even thse peple wh regularly cnsume r behave in an envirnmentally friendly fashin actually temprarily frget their envirnmental cmmitments, and behave like nrmal turists. They d suffer sme kind f ec-guilt, but nevertheless they cntinue t travel, and they cntinue t fly.
I’m ld enugh t remember when turism was just the summer hliday, and yu wuld lk frward t thse tw weeks a year when yu wuld g n hliday. It was special and meaningful, but nwadays it is s easy t travel. Travel is nw seen as a right, nt as a privilege. Hwever, t sme extent, I hpe there will be a significant rise in the cst f travel, r at least in air travel. In my pinin, nly in this way can peple realize the value f travel experience and really enjy it. Als, nly in this way can many prblems arising with the develpment f turism be prperly slved.
32. What is the prblem with mst turists accrding t the authr?
A. They dn’t care abut ur planet at all.
B. They pst t many phts n scial media.
C. They can hardly find the right place t explre.
D. They fail t have a meaningful traveling experience.
33. What des the underlined part “taken a tll n” in Paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Imprved. B. Damaged. C. Saved. D. Shaped.
34. What can we learn frm Paragraph 4?
A. Turists can hardly be affected by envirnmental awareness.
B. Turists are unaware f the effect f their behavir.
C. Turists’ envirnmental awareness has been increased.
D. Turists find it hard t travel withut harming the envirnment.
35. Why des the authr hpe airline tickets will be mre expensive?
A. T limit the develpment f turism.
B. T create a sense f equality in sciety.
C. T help peple value their traveling experience.
D. T make peple less excited abut travelling.
