This challenging perid marked the beginning f Gall’s artistic jurney, when he was already 83 years ld.
Gall initially studied mechanical engineering in Barcelna and later wrked fr a cmpany in Zaragza. In 1966, he pursued management studies at IESE Business Schl in Barcelna, and by 1968, he had becme an assciate prfessr there.
With his academic backgrund, Gall was determined t study at a respected institutin. Hwever, when he applied t study art in Barcelna, he was encuraged t pursue art histry instead. He graduated at the age f 90.
Gall admires Francisc de Zurbarán fr his masterful use f white, and Jaquín Srlla fr his skillful use f light. Reflecting n his artistic jurney, he nted, “Studying art has strengthened my belief that the truly great things in life are gdness, truth, and beauty. I dn’t mind making mney, but increasingly, thse ther things matter mst t me.”
Sme f Gall’s wrks were featured in an exhibitin in Graus, a small village in the Pyrenees, where they were displayed fr six mnths. Gall humbly acknwledged, “After cmpleting my degree, wuld I call myself an artist? I dn’t knw, but at least nw I have a piece f paper that says I am.”

Making fabric frm waste ptat plants culd ffer a mre sustainable alternative t pure cttn, as pressure grws n the fashin industry t reduce its envirnmental impact.
Ptates pse a headache fr farmers. The tubers (块茎) are harvested and eaten, but the abve-grund plant cntains slanine, which is pisnus, s it can’t be used fr animal feed. Farmers usually remve this matter befre ptates are harvested.
Nw, a UK startup cmpany, Fibe, wants t avid this waste by extracting (提取) fibres frm ptat stems (茎) t make a sustainable fabric. In April, it intrduced the wrld’s first ptat thread (线), a mixture f 75 per cent cttn and 25 per cent ptat fibres.
The apprach began as a prject by a grup f design engineering students, including Gal-Shhet, at Imperial Cllege Lndn. Tasked with designing a sustainable business cncept, the grup investigated using waste plants t create a mre sustainable alternative t cttn. The students chse ptat plants because they are mass-prduced all ver the wrld, are rich in fibres and their leaves have n ther practical use. They turned their idea int a business after graduating in 2022.
Fibe primarily uses nn-bilgical prcess t extract the fibres. “Once raw fibres are extracted, they are cleaned and graded t prduce sft balls. The ptat fibres are similar in quality t cttn,” says Gal-Shhet. Hwever, because the land is already being used t grw ptates, ptat fibres require 99.7 per cent less water and prduce 82 per cent fewer carbn emissins (排放), as well as needing n additinal land, accrding t Fibe’s internal analysis.
Muhammad Tausif at the University f Leeds, UK, wh has wrked with Fibe, says industry demand fr sustainable fibres is grwing, but the cmpany will need t prve its ptat fibres have the“length, fineness and strength” t cmpete with cttn. “Fr a fibre t be successful and t be made int a prduct, these are the key factrs,” he says.
8.What d the underlined wrds“this matter” in paragraph 2 refer t?
A.Pure cttn.B.The pisnus tuber.
C.Animal feed.D.The abve-grund plant.
9.What des the authr intend t d in paragraph 4?
A.Summarize the previus paragraphs.B.Add sme backgrund infrmatin.
C.Prvide sme advice fr the students.D.Intrduce a new tpic fr discussin.
10.What des Fibe’s internal analysis highlight abut using ptat fibres?
A.Its standard requirements.B.Its envirnmental advantages.
C.Its technical barriers.D.Its wide applicatins.
11.What des Tausif expect f Fibe?
A.It shuld demnstrate its fibres’cmpetitive qualities.
B.It shuld secure business partners as sn as pssible.
C.It shuld make a big difference t the fibre industry.
D.It shuld launch appealing prducts int the market.
Pmpeii’s plaster cast (石膏模型) human figures aren’t wh they were assumed t be, genetic tests have revealed, highlighting the way idealised stries can be prjected nt archaelgical (考古的) evidence. The analysis als reveals that the demgraphy (人口学) f Pmpeii was far mre cmplicated and diverse than previusly thught.
When Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, many f Pmpeii’s residents were cvered and died, and as their bdies were destryed gradually by natural prcesses, cavities (窟窿) frmed that perfectly preserved their psitins in their final mments. In the 19th century, archaelgists develped a methd f puring plaster int the cavities t make life-like casts. Since then, mre than 100 f these casts have been made, preserving the victims’ shapes alng with any remaining bnes. Hwever, it has lng been knwn that many f the plaster casts were arranged int different pses and smetimes placed tgether t add t the drama f the Pmpeii stry, says Valeria Amretti at the Archaelgical Park f Pmpeii in Naples, Italy.
T learn mre abut wh these peple were, Amretti and her teammates examined 14 f the plaster casts and extracted DNA frm bnes in five f them.
What they fund has cmpletely changed the established interpretatins f wh they were. An adult wearing a glden bracelet (手镯) with a child n the lap was lng believed t be the child’s mther. The DNA analysis shws the adult is actually a male wh is bilgically unrelated t the child. A nearby figure, frmerly interpreted as being the father, was als unrelated t the suppsed mther and child.
Alissa Mittnik at Harvard University says the study highlights the imprtance f applying science befre interpreting archaelgy at face value. “Ultimately, it reminds us that the mst bvius, dramatic r sensatinal explanatins d nt always hld true, encuraging us t stay aware f and questin ur assumptins, ” she says.
12.What is stressed abut the analysis in paragraph 1?
A.It has slved a cmplicated scial issue.
B.It is based n well-dcumented stries.
C.It challenges a lng-held assumptin.
D.It needs further supprting evidence.
13.What can be learned abut the plaster casts accrding t Amretti?
A.They have fallen victim t the wear f time.
B.They were repsitined t enhance dramatic effects.
C.They had mstly been made befre the 19th century.
D.They represented advanced wrkmanship at the time.
14.What des paragraph 4 mainly tell us abut the DNA analysis?
A.Its findings.B.Its methds.C.Its samples.D.Its mtivatins.
15.Hw des Mittnik find the study?
A.Cnventinal.B.Inspiratinal.C.Cmplicated.D.Prejudiced.

I pressed further: “I literally studied this during my master’s degree.” The prfessr went ver the answers with the cnfirming I had been But n ne acknwledged it r aplgized. I brught the experience up with my mentr (导师). She said: “Smetimes peple struggle t believe smething said with an unfamiliar accent.”
Her hit me hard. Was I meant t be unheard r nt taken seriusly because I different?
The rest f the year didn’t prceed any better. Any time I had smething t in a grup setting and I thught abut speaking up, the memry f that experience in class me. By the end f my first year, my cnfidence had hit rck bttm. I felt by my wn vice.
Yet, I reslved I wuld vercme the prblem by my speech. I wrked n my enunciatin (清楚的表达) and slwing dwn when I In grup meetings and presentatins, I t pace my speech. Gradually, these helped lwer sme f the barriers. I became less likely t be , and I was able t my classmates and ensure my cntributins were recgnized.
