Tday, abut 25% f the wrld is the wilderness, which has been largely unchanged fr thusands f years. Hwever, the last wildernesses are becming smaller as humanity’s impact n the wrld cntinues t spread. Defrestatin is pening up ever greater parts f the Amazn, with an estimated 8 millin hectares f rainfrest lst annually. Since 1990, arund 3.3 millin square kilmeters f the wilderness, an area the size f India, has been lst. One f the key drivers f the surprising lss has been agriculture.
A new study reveals that at least 40% f the land which culd becme suitable fr grwing crps by the 2060s is the untuched wilderness, especially the Arctic tundra (苔原) f Alaska, Canada and Russia. Hwever, if these areas became farmland, it wuld destry their bidiversity (生物多样性) and weaken effrts t limit climate change. The study calls fr mre research int upgrading agriculture withut the need fr mre land, emphasizing the imprtance f increasing farming efficiency.
While there’s n certainty that the wilderness will be changed int farmland, it may becme increasingly difficult t avid ding s. Large areas f current farmland are predicted t becme t ht in the future, with at least 70% expected t supprt fewer crp varieties by the 2060s. If this leads t the transfrmatin (转变) f the wilderness, humans will lse sme f the mst riginal envirnments remaining n Earth.
Balancing the prtectin f the wilderness with demands fr fd is nt easy, but is pssible. Prfessr Ilya Maclean, a c-authr f the research, says, “What we’ve seen ver the last 50 years is a shift tward large fields and single-crp planting, as it’s much cheaper fr a farmer t prduce crps that way. But if yu grw a single crp n yur farm, yu’re mre easily affected by the uncertainties f climate change. We need t welcme farmers t the decisin-making prcess s they can feed int agricultural plicies and strategies.”
The cperatin culd lead t plicies that encurage farms t reduce the risk f crp failures. If the measures are successful, the wrld can ensure that everyne has enugh fd t eat, while keeping ur wilderness wild.

31. What shuld farmers take int cnsideratin based n Maclean’s wrds?

A newly-develped Andrid phne app is able t remtely estimate pressure in a persn’s arteries (动脉) as there heart squeezes, prviding ptentially life-saving details n individual health withut the need fr specialized equipment.
Rather than having t take a trip t the dctr r use a dedicated device, individuals might ne day be able t make use f the phne in their pcket, making the innvatin particularly imprtant in underserved ppulatins where access t medical care is limited.
Develped by researchers frm the University f Pittsburgh, the app wrks by taking a variety f readings frm the accelermeter, camera, and tuch sensrs built int mdern smartphnes. What makes the app smart is the way it gets users t change the psitin f their hands t change bld flw, and apply a number f instructed tuches t the phne screen t get the right pulse pressure readings. “Because f gravity, there’s a pressure change in yur thumb when yu raise yur hands up abve yur heart, and using the phne’s accelermeter, yu’re able t cnvert that int the relative change in pressure,” says bimedical engineer Vishaal Dhamtharan frm the University f Pittsburgh.
In tests n 24 peple and crss-referencing with a larger database, the app methd detected pulse pressure t a reasnably accurate level, within arund 8 mm HG. As develpment cntinues, the app accuracy level will mst likely imprve n that even further.
The researchers admit they’ll need t wrk n “changing the mindset” arund using pulse pressure as a bld pressure indicatr — but it’s the best slutin we’ve seen yet fr taking this crucial reading using a nrmal smartphne. “Develpment f a prtable bld pressure measurement device that des nt require any external calibratin (外部校准) is unrealistic—such a device currently des nt exist,” says bimedical engineer Sanjeev Shrff, frm the University f Pittsburgh. “The research wrk reprted in this publicatin is an imprtant step in the right directin.”
32. Why is the newly-develped phne app particularly imprtant?
A. It’s mney-saving.B. It’s much easier t access.
C. It’s mre accurate.D. It’s a specialized facility.
33. What des paragraph 3 mainly talk abut the app?
A. The special functin f it.B. The wrking principle f it.
C. The purpse f develping it.D. The inspiratin fr develping it.
34. What can we infer abut the future f the app in smartphnes?
A. It will have a bright prspect.
B. It will cme int the market sn.
C. It will be built in every smartphne.
D. It will replace the traditinal equipment.
35. What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
A. T test an app.B. T imprve an app.
C. T advertise an app.D. T intrduce an app.
