    Passage 1
    Sir Edmund Hillary was the first man t climb Qmlangma. On May 29, 1953 he climbed the highest muntain then knwn t man—29,000 feet straight up. He was spken highly f fr his spirit when he came back. Hwever, until we read his bk, High Adventure, we dn't understand that Hillary had t grw int this success.
    Yu see, in 1952 he tried t climb Qmlangma, but failed. A few weeks later a grup in England asked him t give a speech t its members. Hillary was given a warm welcme when walking n stage. Peple there thught him as a her, but Edmund Hillary saw himself as a failure. He mved away frm the micrphne and walked t the side f the stage.
    He raised ne hand and pinted at a picture f the muntain. He said in a lud vice, “Qmlangma, yu beat me the first time, but I’ll beat yu the next time because yu’ve grwn all yu are ging t grw, but I'm still grwing!”

    Junk was brn in 1939 and grew up in a small twn in Japan. During her childhd, she was thin and weak. At age 10, Junk went n a schl trip. The students climbed tw muntains, and Junk lved it. She culd climb in her wn time and ability.
    After Junk graduated frm university in 1962, she jined several climbing clubs. But they had mstly men members. Sme even refused t climb with a wman. They thught wmen shuld stay at hme nly. In 1965, Junk married a well-knwn Japanese climber. Over the years, they climbed all the highest muntains f Japan.
    At the same time Junk started a wman's climbing club. By 1972, she was chsen t lead a team f wmen t climb Qmlangma. It tk three years fr the 15 wmen t train and raise mney fr their climb. Finally in 1975, the team went t climb the muntain. They fund nine guides t help them climb up the muntain. Everything went well until the mrning f May 4. Suddenly a huge amunt f snw and ice fell n them. Junk and sme thers were buried(被埋) in the snw. One guide saved Junk. She rushed t help thers. Everyne was alive but they all hurt badly, including Junk. Hwever, the team decided t cntinue their climb. Abut tw weeks later, n May 16, Junk reached the tp f Qmlangma. She was the first wman t stand n tp f the highest muntain in the wrld.
    Junk's will and her pwer helped her achieve her gals. Junk still climbs muntains. She wants peple t remember her as "the free spirit f the muntains." Once she said, "Skills and ability alne d nt get yu t the tp, it is the willpwer that is the mst imprtant. This willpwer yu cannt buy with mney r given by thers, it rises frm yur heart."
