Fishermen frm Zhushan risked their lives t save 384 POWs. Fang was shcked. “Hw had we in China never heard f the Lisbn Maru? We knw f the Titanic, but n ne here ever mentined the Lisbn Maru.” This mystery arused Fang's curisity, leading him t begin the search fr the ship in 2016. During the jurney, Fang learned f 94-year-ld Lin Agen, the sle surviving fisherman t have participated in the rescue, and f a 98-year-ld British sldier, Dennis Mrley, wh survived the rdeal. “It felt like a race against time. We had t dcument their stries befre it was t late,” Fang says.
Fang launched a search fr mre survivrs and their families. He placed ads in British newspapers like The Sunday Times and The Guardian. “Peple thught I was crazy — “Wh even reads newspapers anymre? they said. But I knew that the elderly, like myself, still d,” Fang says. The campaign was a success, leading t BBC Radi 4 inviting him n a shw, which in turn cnnected him with 380 POW families.
On Aug 23, The Sinking f the Lisbn Maru premiered n Dngji Island, where the tragedy ccurred. Fang wrte n his WeChat mments:“We finally shwed the dcumentary n Dngji Island, the very place where ur ancestrs perfrmed their heric acts 82 years ag. Scientists have made an amazing discvery deep undergrund in Suth Africa. They fund tiny living creatures called micrbes in a rck estimating t be 2 billin years ld! This rck was fund almst 50 feet belw the surface in a special place called the Bushveld Igneus Cmplex. This finding is very exciting because it shws the ldest knwn living micrbes fund in such extreme cnditins, much lder than any ther micrbes fund befre.
The leader f the research team, Yhey Suzuki, said, “We didn't knw if 2-billin-year-ld rcks were habitable. Until nw, the ldest gelgical layer in which living micrrganisms had been fund was a 100-millin-year-ld depsit beneath the cean flr, s this is a very exciting discvery.”
The rck sample was abut 1 ft lng and came frm an area knwn fr having a lt f valuable minerals. This area was frmed when ht magma (岩浆) cled dwn slwly undergrund. Because the rcks have stayed mstly the same fr billins f years, they created safe little spaces, r cracks, where micrbes culd live and thrive.
T make sure that the micrbes they fund were really frm the ld rck and nt just smething that gt mixed in later, the scientists used sme special tls t study them. They used three different methds called electrn micrscpy, flurescent micrscpy, and infrared spectrscpy t lk clsely at the micrbes’ DNA and prteins, and were able t shw that the micrbes were alive and that they had lived in that rck fr a very lng time.
Finding these ancient micrbes helps scientists understand hw life can exist even in extreme cnditins. The researchers hpe that by studying these ancient micrbes, they can learn mre abut hw life began n Earth and hw it evlved ver time. They are als curius t see if this can help them find signs f life n ther planets, like Mars.
28.Why was the discvery f micrbes thrilling?
A.Because it prves the 2-billin-year-ld rcks were inhabitable.
B.Because it discvers the ldest knwn living micrbes in the wrld.
C.Because it reveals the wrld deep under the Bushveld Igneus Cmplex.
D.Because it uncvers a 100-millin-year-ld depsit beneath the cean flr.
29.What made it pssible fr micrbes t survive?
    A.The extreme weather.B.The melting magma.
    C.The stable cnditins.D.The diverse minerals.
    30.What des paragraph 4 mainly fcus n?
A.The micrbes they discvered.B.The discveries they made.
C.The research methds they applied.D.The rganisms they mixed.
31.What may these ancient micrbes help researchers t learn in the future?
A.The inhabitability f the Mars.B.The signs f life in severe cnditins.
C.The DNA and prteins f ther species.D.The emergence and evlutin f life.
Aspects f yur persnality can be revealed in a heartbeat, literally, a new study frm Germany suggests. The study identified heartbeat “signatures”— wave patterns in the heart's electrical activity —that were linked with persnality traits.
Peple with certain heartbeat signatures scred higher n tests f neurticism (神经过敏) — meaning these individuals tend t experience mre negative emtins, such as anxiety and a depressed md, and fewer psitive emtins, including happiness and cheerfulness.
The study invlved 425 university students ages 18 t 33. The students cmpleted persnality tests, and had their heart electrical activity measured using electrcardigraphy (心电图). “With this methd, we have fund smething that is perhaps mre accurate, and mre relatable, than many ther measures f persnality,” said study researcher Stefan Kelsch, a prfessr f bilgical psychlgy at the Freie University Berlin.
The results suggest such heartbeat signatures may prvide a mre bjective way t measure persnality than current methds, the researchers say. Persnality is cmmnly assessed using questinnaires, but these may suffer frm bias — peple may chse respnses that they think are mre acceptable fr their gender, r they may misunderstand their wn traits.
Researchers may als be able t identify heartbeat signatures that are characteristic f certain emtinal disrders, such as depressin, r f cardivascular diseases, Kelsch said. Such signatures culd ne day help diagnse these disrders, r identify peple at risk fr them, he said.
Previusly, Kelsch and clleagues fund a link between certain heart electrical activity patterns and peple with “cld” persnalities, wh tend nt t shw emtin. In the new study, similar patterns were seen amng thse with high scres in neurticism and lw scres in psitive emtin, like cmpassin and empathy.
Althugh Kelsch suspects that this type f electrical pattern is nt particularly healthy, future research is needed t cnfirm this. Eventually, Kelsch hpes t be able t see whether certain interventins, such as listening t music r watching films, change emtinal states and the heart's electrical activity, he said.
32.What des “signatures” refer t in Paragraph 1?
    A.The scres f neurticism tests.B.Peple’s persnality traits.
C.The researchers’ written names.D.The wave patterns f yur heart.
33.What d researchers think abut the cmmn assessment f persnality?
A.It is mre bjective and much healthier.
B.It is likely t be prejudiced and misunderstd.
C.It is based n heart electrical activity measures.
D.It is mre accurate and mre relatable t peple.
34.Accrding t the study, what can be learned abut “cld” peple?
A.They tend t scre lwer in neurticism tests.
B.They tend t suffer frm cardivascular disease.
C.They tend t be less cmpassinate and empathetic.
D.They tend t gain higher degrees in psitive emtins.
35.What is the main idea f the passage?
    A.Heartbeats hint yur persnality traits.
    B.Heartbeat signatures heal depressin.
    C.Heartbeats change yur emtinal states.
    D.Heartbeats indicates the electrical activity.
    Hw t Imprve Math Skills
There’s n dubt that math is tugh. By building up yur skills and practicing every day, yu can make math a little less frustrating and have a higher chance f success. Use these tips and tricks during schl, while yu’re studying.

Yu can find tns f example prblems nline. If yu’re ging ver a cncept, lk it up and try 2 t 3 prblems n yur wn. Check the answers t figure ut if yu gt them right, and study the cncept again if yu didn’t. Yur teacher might als be able t give yu sme extra example prblems if yu ask fr them. 39 This will give yu an verall sense f what yu’ll need t d t find the slutins.
Teach math prblems r cncepts t smene else.
Learning by teaching smene is a great way t slidify cncepts. Invite a friend r family member ver and explain t them what yu’re ding and hw yu’re ding it. If yu get stuck, review yur ntes r textbk again until yu can explain it clearly and cncisely. Have yur friend r family member ask yu questins, t. 40
