Electric vehicles: Can ‘lightweighting’ cmbat range anxiety?
It seems like a simple enugh chice. The widespread use f electric vehicles (EVs) culd cntribute t the effrts t stp glbal warming. But many mtrists are still chsing 1 (nt switch) t this lw-carbn technlgy. While EV uptake has been rapid, it’s been slwer than sme carmakers expected.
There are many reasns why peple are nt mving t EVs as quickly as expected. This includes price, charging infrastructure (基础设施) and cncerns abut 2 _____they can travel — s-called “range anxiety.” Drivers want t be able t charge and g in the same time 3 takes t fill a tank with petrl, and they want the same mileage per charge f the battery. But with tday’s lithium-in batteries (锂离子电池), EVs can nly g s far.
Nw, there are signs that sme aut cmpanies are lking fr innvative ways t vercme these bstacles t adptin. Their slutin? Make cars lighter.
“Every gram f that weight reductin imprves range,” says Andrew Pliak, U.S chief technlgy fficer f Panasnic Autmtive. The cmpany says it has develped cmpnents that weigh between 30 t 60 percent less 4 affecting perfrmance. These, including the speakers and audi system used in cars, can draw 60 percent less pwer frm the car.
In 2023, Panasnic released five-centimeter-thick speakers, 5 ability t prduce sund is typically matched by speakers in the dr that are three times as thick, and that fit int a car’s dashbard. The technlgy remved significant weight in the drs. Nw, Pliak says, Panasnic is nubling dwn n that cncept t further lighten the weight inside vehicles.
Anther majr carmaker, Hnda, is lking at a different key cmpnent in EVs-the battery itself-as part f its effrt t reduce weight. It 6 (make) a large number f investments in develping slid-state batteries. The batteries are smaller and lighter than the cnventinal lithium-in batteries currently used in mst EVs n the rad. The battery technlgy als has the ability t charge faster and is 7 (likely) t be damaged by verheating resulting frm fast-charging.
This brings added benefits, says Hnda spkespersn Chris Martin. Nt having t wrry abut the battery verheating means it 8 nt need the same safety features arund it. This wuld serve t further lighten the car.
Lighter-weight cmpnents culd help t bring the cst f EVs dwn, t. “I think it’s certain that 9 the technlgy advances, the csts fr an EV will g dwn,” says Pliak. The questin that remains, hwever, is 10 peple will think much lighter electric cars really can g the distance.

Dupes are wearing ut Lululemn Athletica
Dupes are the prducts that cst less than the premium (高端的) versins but are f similar style and quality. Less expensive versins f premium prducts have becme a(n) 11 alternative, particularly fr yunger shppers.
That is becming a prblem fr Lululemn Athletica, the cmpany that 12 high- end sprtswear and made $100 leggings the nrm.
“The brand lg desn’t hld as much appeal as it used t,” said Mikayla Kitspuls, a 22- year- ld cllege student. “Finding 13 is the new status symbl.” When Kitspuls was in high schl, she wre Lululemn leggings, which cst abut $100. Nw, she buys her leggings n Amazn fr abut $30. She said the quality and fit is almst 14 , s why pay mre?
The heightened cmpetitin cmes as Lululemn has made a series f 15 that have turned ff even sme f its mst devted fans. Nt lng ag, it remved a new type f leggings frm its stres and website after custmers cmplained abut the fit. Other mistakes have included a clr palette that was t 16 and nt having enugh f sme prducts such as smaller size leggings. The misfires have pushed peple such as Natalie Assink t 17 seek ut different brands. The20- year- ld cllege student said she switched frm Lululemn t Gymshark and AYBL nt just because their leggings cst less, but als because they have mre clr varieties.
Buying cheaper versins f premium prducts isn’t new. Basting abut it is. Ellyn Briggs, Mring Cnsult’s brands analyst, 18 the grwing ppularity f dupes t inflatin but als t the rise f scial media. The N. I reasn peple said they bught dupes was t save mney, accrding t Mrning Cnsult’s survey. They als wanted t test ut whether the cheaper versins were as gd as the premium 19 and then pst abut them n TikTk r ther platfrms. “It’s mre than just a transactin,” Briggs said. “They want t share the fact that they have 20 a success.”

Technlgical change is everywhere and affects every aspect f life, mstly fr the better. Hwever, scial changes brught abut by new technlgy are ften mistaken fr a change in 21 .
An example at hand is the 22 f parents in the lives f their children wh are attending cllege. Surveys n this tpic suggest that parents tday cntinue t be “very” r “smewhat” verly-prtective even after their children mve int cllege 23 . The same surveys als indicate that the rate f parental invlvement is 24 tday than it was a generatin ag. This is usually interpreted as a sign that tday’s parents are trying t manage their children’s lives past the pint where this behavir is 25 .
26 , greater parental invlvement des nt indicate that parents are failing t let g f their “adult” children.
In the cntext f this discussin, it seems valuable t first find ut the cause f change in the case f parents’ invlvement with their 27 children. If parents f earlier generatins had wanted t be 28 their cllege-age children frequently, wuld this have been pssible? Prbably nt. On the ther hand, des the pssibility f frequent cmmunicatin tday mean that the urge t d s was nt 29 a generatin ag? Many studies shw that lder parents — tday’s grandparents — wuld have called their children mre ften if the means and cst f ding s had nt been a 30 .
Furthermre, studies shw that finances are the mst frequent 31 f cmmunicatin between parents and their cllege children. The fact that cllege students are financially dependent n their parents is nthing new; nr are 32 fr mre mney t be sent frm hme. This 33 is neither gd nr bad; it is a fact f cllege life, tday and in the past.
34 the advanced technlgy, we live in an age f bettered cmmunicatin. This has many implicatins well beynd the rle that parents seem t play in the lives f their children wh have left fr cllege. But it is useful t bear in mind that all such changes 35 the technlgy and nt sme imagined desire by parents t keep their children under their wings.

The Mystery f the Haunted Huse
In a small, secluded twn, there std an ld, abandned huse. Legends said it was haunted, but Detective Alex didn’t believe in such superstitins. One day, he received a call frm a lcal histrian wh claimed 1 (see) strange lights and sunds cming frm the huse at night.
Detective Alex decided t investigate. Appraching the huse, he felt a chill in the air. The dr was slightly ajar, creaking eerily in the wind. He nticed sme faint ftprints f different sizes in the dust arund the entrance, indicating that there might be mre than ne persn 2 (invlve). Inside, the huse was filled with dust and cbwebs.
He first explred the living rm, n 3 flr he fund sme brken glass shards. Using a special light, he detected sme smudged fingerprints n the remaining pieces f glass. He cautiusly cllected these pieces as ptential evidence. Then in the attic, he fund a series f strange markings, which seemed t frm a pattern, but he 4 make n sense f it at first. As he 5 (examine) the markings, he heard a faint man cming frm dwnstairs.
He quickly made his way dwn and saw 6 appeared t be a shadwy figure disappearing arund the crner. He chased after it, but when he reached the spt, there was n ne there. Hwever, he nticed a small piece f fabric caught n a nail. It was a mdern fabric. nt 7 that wuld belng in an ld, abandned huse.
Back at the plice statin, he analyzed the fabric and fund that it was frm a cmmn brand f clthing. The fingerprints frm the glass were run thrugh the database, but n matches were fund immediately. He studied the markings frm the attic and was at a lss. 8 he realized they were crdinates.
Fllwing the crdinates, he arrived at an abandned warehuse n the utskirts f twn where he fund a grup f thieves wh were using the haunted huse as a decy t hide their stlen gds. Fr many f us, summertime means rad trips t the beach r muntains, r at the very least sme additinal dust and bird pp n the exterir f ur vehicles. The extra grime (污垢) leads us t d ne f tw things: Wash ur car in the driveway r head t the car wash. But which chice is better fr the envirnment?
The main 11 with either chice are the amunt f fresh water being used and the types f chemicals used t scrub the dirt. Bth f these cncerns can be clsely 12 when washing the car at hme, says Katy Gresh, spkeswman fr the Suthwest Regin f the Pennsylvania Department f Envirnmental Prtectin. She advises car wners t put aside a set 13 f water fr the entire wash.” It’s just like brushing yur teeth, “she says, “Yu dn’t want t leave the water running r use mre than yu need fr the jb.” But even fllwing this advice cmes with an envirnmental risk: Washing yur car in the driveway r street flushes the dirty water int strm 14
Jhn Schmbert, executive directr f 3 Rivers Wet Weather, says it’s never a gd idea t wash a car n asphalt. His rganizatin wrks t educate the public abut strm sewers and water runff, keeping this untreated water frm entering the Allegheny regin’s waterways. “We ask peple t cnsider washing their cars n lawns r ther permeable surfaces where the water gets 15 ,” Schmbert says.
“Sil can break dwn and help 16 thse things,” Schmbert says. “Strm sewers are nt made fr waste dispsal” Even when car wners use natural saps t wash their cars, which Schmbert says are 17 ineffective at breaking dwn grease anyway, they are still rinsing debris frm the rads and salt and tar int the strm sewers.
The cmmercial car wash dwn the street knws full well the rules 18 wastewater in strm sewers. Accrding t the Internatinal Carwash Assciatin (ICA), a prfessinal rganizatin fr the car washing and detailing industry, prfessinal car washes must use water renewable 19 . These mandated prcesses nt nly keep the dirty water ut f strm sewers and regular water treatment systems, but they als wrk t reduce water usage at 20 facilities.

T Much f Our Seafd Has a Dark Secret
Nt that lng ag, if yu saw a piece f fish n yur plate, yu wuldn’t have thught t ask where it came frm r whether it was sustainable.
That began t change in the 1990s as 21 grups fught t prtect all kinds f life in the cean frm verfishing. After persuading Cngress t create and enfrce strict plans t 22 species, they set in mtin a virtuus cycle that made seafd, frm the mighty swrdfish t the humble sea scallp, 23 again. New rules fr ther species have had similarly 24 effects. Sea turtles that nce drwned in shrimp nets can nw escape. Fewer diving seabirds are getting caught n fishing lines. And limits n fishing smaller species such as menhaden mean that whales ff ur casts have mre t eat and tday can be seen cavrting (欢腾)within sight f the Statue f Liberty. 25 , American cmmercial and recreatinal fisheries generated 35 percent mre sales in 2022 than in 2018.
But walk int yur lcal supermarket, and yu may still be buying snapper blasted frm their reefs by Indnesian fishermen using dynamite r 26 caught yellwfin tuna and squid. U.S. fisheries may be much imprved, but up t 80 percent f the fish and shellfish n American plates is imprted. Much f it cmes via bscure internatinal seafd cnglmerates (企业集团) that purchase fish frm cmpanies that have been 27 fishing against the law and prfiting frm frced labr, as the nnprfit Outlaw Ocean Prject has dcumented.
We in wealthy natins unwittingly supprt these abuses by using the wrld’s supply f fish 28 it is a limitless line f credit. But this credit is running ut. The glbal catch f fish and ther wildlife in the cean peaked in the 1990s and has since 29 steadily dwnward. Sn, nt even frced labr may be able t 30 prfit ut f the remaining wild fish.
Expanding fish farming, r aquaculture(水产业), was nce thught t be a ptential 31 t this prblem, but it has als nt, as hped, given wild fish the break they need. Salmn and shrimp, Americans’ favrite farmed seafds, are still fed t wild fish caught in prly regulated freign waters. Highly nutritius fish, such as anchvies and sardines, that make up 20 percent t 30 percent f the glbal catch are fed t salmn and shrimp - a striking 32 f prtein.
Clearly, bth wild and farmed seafd have a lng way t g befre they are actually 33 . S what d we need t put truly safe, resilient and ethically prcured fish and shellfish n everybdy’s 34 ? Cnsumers can make better chices, but t mve past depletin and abuse, gvernments need t institute new fishery management laws, 35 by rigrus enfrcement.
