Mby-Dick was, fr me, ne f thse bks classified f “things yu shuld have read a lng time ag”. And as I am a mathematician, despite my interest in literature, my intellectual pririties did nt include a 400-page nvel abut whales. That all changed ne day when I verheard a mathematician friend mentin that Mby-Dick cntains a reference t cyclids.
Cyclids are amng the mst beautiful mathematical curves in existence — the French mathematician Blaise Pascal fund them s distractingly fascinating that he claimed merely thinking abut them culd relieve the pain f a bad tthache — but applicatins t whaling are nt usually listed n their resume.
Curius, I finally read Mby-Dick, and was delighted t find that it is full f mathematical metaphrs. I realized further it’s nt just Herman Melville; Le Tlsty writes abut calculus (微积分), James Jyce abut gemetry.
Regretfully, the cnnectins between mathematics and literature have nt received the attentin they deserve. In fact, they are ften cnsidered t be against each ther. I recall that at the end f my very last English class at schl, in 1991, the teacher gave me a lvely handwritten nte with a lng list f bks she thught I might like, saying, “Srry t lse yu t the lab.”
The idea that ne wuld have t chse between mathematics and literature is, I think, smething f a tragedy — nt nly because the tw fields are fundamentally linked, but als because understanding these links can enhance yur enjyment f bth.
The perceived bundary between math and literature is actually a very recent idea. Fr mst f recrded histry, mathematics was part f every educated persn’s cultural awareness.
The 11th-century Persian schlar Omar Khayyam, t whm the petry cllectin knwn as the Rubaiyat is credited, was als a mathematician, and created beautiful gemetric slutins t mathematical prblems. In the 14th century, Chaucer wrte bth The Canterbury Tales and a paper n the astrlabe (星盘,用于测量天体的距离). There are innumerable such examples, nt least that f Lewis Carrll, wh, f curse, was a mathematician first and an authr secnd.
There is a deeper reasn we find mathematics at the heart f literature. The universe is full f underlying structure, pattern and regularity, and mathematics is the best tl we have fr understanding it. That’s why mathematics is ften called the language f the universe, and why it is s vital t science. Since we humans are part f the universe, it is nly natural that ur frms f creative expressin, literature amng them, will als reveal a tendency fr pattern and structure.

4.Which f the fllwing statements is the authr mst likely t agree with?
A.Taking n maths and giving up literature was nt a wise chice fr him.
B.Bth maths and literature are part f the pursuit t understand the universe.
C.There is enugh research n the cnnectins between maths and literature.
D.Mathematicians may find it hard t understand ideas embedded in literature.

P-Shen Lh, a prfessr at Carnegie Melln University and Team USA’s cach fr the Internatinal Mathematical Olympiad (国际数学奥林匹克竞赛), delivered a talk called “Hw t Survive the ChatGPT Invasin.” And his simple practical advice applied t everyne in the hall, “Think abut what makes humans human,” Lh said.
He says the key t survival is knwing hw t slve prblems - and knwing which prblems t slve. He urges math enthusiasts t fcus n creativity, emtin and the stuff that distinguishes man frm machine and wn’t g bslete. As artificial intelligence gets smarter, the imprtance n ingenuity will becme greater. This is what he wants t drill int their impressinable (易受影响的) yung minds: Being human will nly be mre imprtant as AI becmes mre pwerful.
But the peple wh will inherit the ecnmy reshaped by the AI bm are students tday. The tech they’re already using t cheat n their hmewrk will lk primitive by the time they’re in cllege. They belng t the first generatin that will have grwn up with AI, just as Gen Z came f age with the iPhne and millennials barely remember a time befre they were nline. These children and teens f the ChatGPT era will have a better intuitive understanding f this disruptive frce than adults because they will have never really experienced life withut it.
After his talk, I asked hw his message t a rm full f fifth-graders applies t smene in an ffice, and he replied faster than ChatGPT. “The future f jbs is figuring ut hw t find pain pints,” he said. “And a pain pint is a human pain.” It’s his therem (定理) f success. “Yu need t be able t create value,” he said. “Peple wh make value will always have pprtunities.”
“This machine is the wrld’s mst pwerful tl at repeating things that have dne many times befre,” he tells students. “But nw I want t shw smething it cannt d.”
Lh then fed ChatGPT a questin that it almst certainly hasn’t seen befre and it messed up the answer. This might sund familiar t anyne wh has spent enugh time with a chat-bt that has a nasty habit f being cnfidently wrng: It made up a bunch f nnsense and aplgized fr its errrs.
Besides, Lh is a big fan f nn-bvius things. At a university knwn fr cmputer science, he teaches with a piece f chalk. T imprve his public speaking, he spent a year taking imprve cmedy classes. He fund a pain pint, fllwed his wn advice and tk his innate advantage ver AI: He’s a human.
“Is there ging t be a great human-versus-rbts war? The answer is, unfrtunately, yes,” Lh said. “My gal is t make sure the humans win.”
8.Which f the fllwing wrds is in clsest meaning t the underlined wrd “bslete” (para. 2)?
A.extinctB.ut-f-dateC.unnticedD.dwnhill
9.What d students tday have in cmmn with Gen Z and millennials?

B.They all use pwerful AI tls like ChatGPT t chat n their hmewrk.
C.They all grw up with a majr and specific technlgy breakthrugh.
D.They understand the disruptive frce f AI as nne f them experienced life withut it.
10.Which f the fllwing statements is TRUE accrding t the passage?
A.What makes humans human is ur innate advantage against the ever-pwerful, ever-smarter AI.
B.Feeding ChatGPT a tricky questin that appeared in the IMO is ne f the s-called “nn-bvius things”.

D.IMO cntestants are thse wh have pprtunities in the future as they knw hw t create value.

Unlike s-called basic emtins such as sadness, fear, and anger, guilt emerges a little later, in cnjunctin with a child’s grwing grasp f scial and mral nrms. Children aren’t brn knwing hw t say “I’m srry”, rather, they learn ver time that such statements appease (安抚) parents and friends and their wn cnsciences. This is why researchers generally regard s-called mral guilt, in the right amunt, t be a gd thing.
12 It evkes Freud’s ideas and religius hang-ups. Mre imprtant, guilt is deeply uncmfrtable — it’s the emtinal equivalent f wearing a jacket weighted with stnes. Wh wuld inflict it upn a child? Yet this understanding is utdated. “There has been a kind f revival r a rethinking abut what guilt is and what rle guilt can serve,” Vaish says, adding that this revival is part f a larger recgnitin that emtins aren’t binary feelings that may be advantageus in ne cntext and may be harmful in anther.
And guilt, by prmpting us t think mre deeply abut ur gdness, can encurage humans t crrect errrs and fix relatinships. 13 It is a kind f scial glue.
Viewed in this light, guilt is an pprtunity. Wrk by Tina Malti, a psychlgy prfessr at the University f Trnt, suggests that guilt may cmpensate fr an emtinal deficiency. In a number f studies, Malti and thers have shwn that guilt and sympathy (and its clse cusin empathy) may represent different pathways t cperatin and sharing. Sme kids wh are lw in sympathy may make up fr that shrtfall by experiencing mre guilt, which can cntrl their impulses. 14
In a 2014 study, fr example, Malti and a clleague lked at 244 children, aged 4, 8, and 12. Using caregiver assessments and the children’s self-bservatins, they rated each child’s verall sympathy level and his r her tendency t feel negative emtins (like guilt and sadness) after mral transgressins (违背) . Then the kids were handed stickers and chclate cins, and given a chance t share them with an annymus child. 15 The guilt-prne nes shared mre. Hwever, they may nt magically have becme mre sympathetic t the ther child’s deprivatin.
“That’s gd news.” Malti says, “We can be pr-scial because f the empathetic prclivity (倾向) , r because we caused harm and we feel regret.”
A.And vice versa: High sympathy can substitute fr lw guilt.
B.The main reasn why guilt wrks cmes dwn t simple psychlgy and cnditining we receive as children.
C.Fr the lw-sympathy kids, hw much they shared appeared t turn n hw likely they were t feel guilty.
D.Guilt is an incredibly pwerful emtin which has slip by unnticed fr lng.
E.In the ppular imaginatin, f curse, guilt still gets a bad reputatin.
F.Guilt, in ther wrds, can help hld a cperative species tgether.

When I was 16, my father, in a burst f entrepreneurial spirit, bught an ld guesthuse in ur village and decided t turn it int a luxury htel. At the early stages, he experimented with everything. Arund 1 in 4 adults in the UK will experience a mental health illness in their lifetime, and it is likely climate change will cntribute. Climate change expses cmmunities t extreme weather events, including severe flding and heatwaves, which can leave individuals vulnerable t mental health illnesses.
Several studies have fund a relatinship between increased temperatures and fatal car accidents, with ht weather making drivers fatigued. As heatwaves are expected t increase in frequency and severity in the UK, car crashes may, unfrtunately, becme mre frequent.
