After his death, Xu left behind his famus bk, Xu Xiake’s Travels, which prvides meaningful materials t the Chinese gelgical research. It included a recrd f what he saw, heard and thught abut during his travels and was a persnal diary that was nt published during his lifetime. It was said that Xu was a filial (孝顺的) sn and the beginning purpse f his travel diary was t allw his mther t travel the wrld thrugh his eyes at hme. He fllwed the ancient teaching that says, “When ne’s parents are alive, ne must nt travel t far places.” Fr this reasn, when his mther was still alive, he mainly travelled the sutheast half f the cuntry and wuld nt leave hme fr t lng.
The mst imprtant part f his travels was his ten-thusand-mile jurney t the suthwest. He travelled frm Zhejiang t Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangxi, then Guizhu, and Yunnan. This jurney tk him fur years and he wrte abut ten times mre than he did in the past. In the mrning, he wuld be climbing the muntains and crssing rivers. At night, he wuld lay ut a piece f paper and recrd his daily experiences beside an il lamp.
