The ninth grader at the Gwinnett Schl f Mathematics, Science, and Technlgy in Snellville has received the title “America’s Tp Yung Scientist”, accrding t a press release frm the 3M Cmpany.
Nw in its 17th year, the challenge supprts middle schl students t think creatively and apply STEM principles t discver real-wrld slutins. When the finalists were chsen, they were paired with a 3M scientist wh guided them ver the summer t help transfrm their ideas frm just cncepts int mdels. Sirish spent fur mnths cmpeting against nine ther finalists and secured his win at the final challenge events at 3M’s glbal headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesta.
Sirish’s jurney t winning the award came frm watching his mther wash vegetables and fruits every day and cautin him t always d s. He wndered whether washing actually made a difference.
Since 70 percent f prduce in the US has pestiide residues that are linked t illnesses like cancer and Alzheimer’s, it’s very imprtant t knw if the fruits and vegetables are safe t eat. That’s what PestiSCAND is designed t d. The device wrks by shining light n the surface f the prduce and measuring the wavelengths that bunce back. Sirish has tested the device n mre than 12,000 fd samples including strawberries, apples, and tmates.

The ReefGen Grasshpper can plant dzens f seagrass seeds per minute. Nt nly is this faster than a human diver, but much safer as well.
