My name is Matthew. I'm not someone who has many secretsbecause I'm a terrible liar. But there is one huge secret that I kept for years- -I failed my driving test. I had never failed a test before, and had never even come close. Driving made me anxious , but my parents told me I had to. They signed me up for driving lessons. I had gotten a perfect score for my written permit exam , but getting behind the wheel was a different story.

But when October 30th rolled around ,my pride set in. I wanted to be like everyone else at my school , showing off the brand new license they'd gotten. Looking back on that special day,I can't remember if I was nervous. What I do remember is starting the test , pausing at a stop sign after a few seconds , and being asked by the instructor to pull over. I had received an auto-fail since my pause was indeed a pause and not a real stop. I wasn't upset that I was leaving without a license, but I was scared everyone would know that I had failed. So when I got to class, I told everyone I didn't want to take the test on my birthday.

One Friday a month later, I went to the test spot again and passed. Later that night I drove for the first time by myself, which brought to me an amazing feeling I've never experienced——but sill, I couldn't imagine ever telling anyone the truth. So I didn't. It wasn't until midway through college that I came clean. It turned out plenty of my college friends had failed too! And I gathered enough courage to speak the fact out. Yes ,I had also failed.

Now I realize failure and imperfection are two things everyone has to experience , without which one couldn't make a true man.

24What can we learn about Matthew?

AHe was a slow learner of driving. BHe relied heavily on his parents.

CHe was afraid of taking exams. DHe was bored with telling lies.

25Why did the instructor ask Matthew to pull over?

ATo put an end to his lest. BTo check his parking skills.

CTo give him a second chance, DTo show him a better way of driving.

26W hat made Matthew feel extremely worried after his first attempt?

AFailing to get a driving license. BMissing his birthday celebration.

CMaking his parents disappointed. DLosing face before his classmates.

27W hat did Matthew learn from his own experience?

AHonesty is the best policy. BFailure is a way to grow up.

CTruth stands the test of time. DImperfection is another form of perfection.

    C

People generally see themselves through achievements. In doing that, they end up caring more about their image than the reality of who they actually are. Rather than their work doing the talking, they end up defining themselves by external markers that they hope will earn them respect.

The problem with this is that it encourages both themselves and other people to judge their worth based on some relatively unimportant measure. For example, one day, their educational diploma may overshadow what they actually learned. Therefore, a better way to know a person, I think, is to ask a different set of questions: What motivates them? What makes them ache? What do they long for?

It’s in this spirit that I want to publicly share my values. They are the compass(罗盘) that guides my life. The kindest and most sincere thing I can do is to see, recognize, and understand another person before I make judgments. From there, I can learn to treat others appropriately, depending on the context, learning from my mistakes with time and experience. It’s just a reminder that life is hard for all of us, while at the same time accepting that it’s important we are all also held accountable for our actions.

I have learned that we are all deeply self-interested. I hope to be self-aware enough to check out of the power and status games. That means I’m not competing with anyone for a shiny object; I’d rather compete with myself. It’s about becoming so uniquely different that it would be an insult for me to measure myself against someone else. I believe if I do the work to be internally free from the pull of the power and status games, then I can add value to others bused on my unique knowledge and experience.

If this resonates with(与...共鸣) you, I invite you to join me on this journey in understanding and relating to this complex world. It’s a wonderful mystery, and I think together we can better define it -- not just personally, but also collectively.

28According to the article, which of the following is TRUE?

AThe external markers are better ways to know a person.

BPeople generally judge others’ worth by what they have achieved.

CThe author is someone who is keen on power games.

ALife is hard, so we shouldn’t criticize others when they are not responsible.

BOne should overcome self-interest in order to judge others objectively.

CEveryone is unique, so showing off uniqueness is an insult to others.

DOne should see and understand another person using a real compass.

31Why does the author write the article?

    ATo promote harmonious living.

BTo ask people not to judge others.

CTo call on readers to learn his values.

DTo share his values of understanding the world.

Scientists at the University of Oxford have developed new artificial intelligence (AI) software to recognize and follow up the faces of individual chimpanzees (黑猩猩) in the wild. The new software will allow researcher and wildlife conservationists to greatly cut back on time spent analyzing videos, according to the new paper published today in Science Advances.

“For species like chimpanzees, which have complex social lives and live for many years, getting photos of their behavior from short-term field research can only tell us so much.” says Dan Sehofield, researcher and DPhil student at Oxford University’s Primate Models Lab, School of Anthropology. “By taking advantage of the power of machine learning to unlock large video files, it makes it possible to measure behavior over the long term.”

The computers model was trained using over 10 million images (影像) from Kyoto University’s Primate Research Institute (PRI) video files of wild chimpanzees in Guinea, West Africa. The new software is the first to continuously track and recognize individuals in a wide range of posed, performing with high accuracy in difficult conditions such as low lighting and poor image quality.

“Access to this large video file has allowed us to use the newest deep neural networks to train models at a scale that was previously not possible,” says Arsha Nagrani, co-author of the study and DPhil student at the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford. “Additionally, our new software differs from previous primate face recognition software in that it can be applied to raw videos with limited manual intervention (人工干预) or pre-processing, saving hours of time.”

The technology has potential for many uses, such as monitoring species for conservation. Although the present application focused on chimpanzees, the software provided could be applied to other species, and help drive the adoption of AI systems to solve a range of problems in the wildlife sciences.

32What’s the purpose of developing the new software?

ATo save wildlife researchers’ time spent in the wild.

BTo keep track of wildlife conservationists’ behavior.

CTo protect chimpanzees and help them to live longer.

DTo recognize and track the faces of wild chimpanzees.

33What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?

    AGetting photos. BAnalyzing videos.

CThe new AI software. DA powerful machine.

34What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

AThe unique advantages of the new software.

BSome limitations of using the new software.

CThe working principles of the new software.

DControversial attitudes to the new software.

35What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

AThe new software has a quite bright future.

BThe application of the technology can be tough.

CTechnology is the final goal of scientific research.

DAI systems are widely used in the wildlife sciences.

So, where can you start? The key is to be like Lily: look for an opportunity to make a    51    to those in need, and then take action to make it happen. Being    52    and involved in service is    53    like any other goal you want to achieve. You have to    54    it.

After two seasons of hosting Random Acts, the joy of    55    burdens and brightening lives doesn’t fade. I sometimes    56    Random Acts might lose its feature eventually, but that couldn’t be further from the    57   when I finally meet the people.
