I was at the funeral of my mother. She finally had lost her long battle with cancer. I heard a door open and shut at the back of the church. Quick footsteps hurried along the floor. A young man looked around briefly and then sat next to me. He folded his hands and placed them on his lap. His eyes were filled with tears. He began to sniffle.
“I’m late,” he explained, though no explanation was necessary.
After several eulogies (悼词), he asked, “Why do they keep calling Mary by the name of Margaret?”
“Because, that was her name, Margaret. Never Mary, no one called her Mary.” I whispered.
I wondered why this person couldn’t have sat on the other side of the church. Who was this stranger anyway?
    “Isn’t this the Lutheran Church?”
“No, the Lutheran Church is across the street.”
    “Oh.”
“I believe you’re at the wrong funeral, Sir.”
The seriousness of the occasion mixed with the realization of the man’s mistake burst inside me and came out as laughter. I cupped my hands over my face, hoping it would not be noticed. Sharp looks from others only made the situation seem funnier. He was laughing too, as he glanced around, deciding it was too late to leave.
“I do believe we’ll be the talk of the town,” he smiled.
His name was Rick and, since he had missed his aunt’s funeral, he asked me out for a cup of coffee. That afternoon began a lifelong journey for me with this man who attended the wrong funeral, but was in the right place. A year after our
meeting, we were married at a country church. This time we both arrived at the same church, right on time.

My PhD supervisor used to jokingly tell me that he had passed his prime(鼎盛时期) and that it was up to me to make the Nobel Prize winning discovery for our group. After all, Albert Einstein was just 26 years old when he wrote his paper on Special Relativity. But are we really at our smartest in our 20s? When does our intelligence peak?
It’s an unavoidable fact that our cognitive(认知) abilities are destined to decline at some point. We will have a harder time remembering where we placed our keys or recalling the details of our favorite family story. However, our intelligence is multi-faceted. We have fluid intelligence—that’s our ability to think creatively, solve new problems, and identify patterns, independent of any knowledge from the past. We also have what psychologists call crystallized intelligence, which reflects our learned knowledge and ability to relate to our surroundings. This improves somewhat with age, as experiences tend to expand one’s knowledge. These two forms of intelligence are thought to peak at different times in our lives.
Recently, researchers at Harvard and MIT carried out a study. The results of the study showed that we don’t have to put ourselves out to pasture just yet. For example, 50,000 test participants showed that our ability to process information quickly peaks at around age 18 or 19. Our short-term memory tops out around the age of 25. Likewise, our skill at recognizing faces is greatest when we are in our early 30s. The peak age for creativity in physics appears to be around 48 years old on average. Our overall knowledge, including vocabulary, don’t stop out until we are around 50 years old on average.
32.What do we learn about the writer?
    A. He used to be a PhD supervisor B. He probably got a doctor degree.
    C. He has made great breakthroughs. D. He has a good knowledge of physics.
33.Fluid intelligence includes the following EXCEPT_______.
    A. creative thinking. B. pattern recognition.
    C. problem-solving. D. knowledge accumulation.
34.Crytallized intelligence probably peaks when a person is ______.
    A. weaker B. younger C. stronger D. older
35.What’s the right order of the behavior of our intelligence peak according to the study ?
    A. recognize faces→ process information→short-term memory→
    creativity in physics→overall knowledge.
    B. recognize faces→ process information→ creativity in physics→
    short-term memory→overall knowledge.
    C.process information→short-term memory→recognize faces→
    creativity in physics→overall knowledge.
    D. process information →short-term memory →creativity in physics→
    recognize faces →overall knowledge .

M: Thank you, Mary. We have been looking forward to trying out this restaurant.
W: Before your main course, would you like to order an appetizer?
M: Sure, that sounds great. Where are your appetizers listed?
W: There is a special appetizer menu right here in the center of the table.
M: The chicken looks good. Is that pretty good?
W: You know, that is one of my favorites!
M: Ok, I’ll take one order of that.
W: You could choose another appetizer for half price to share,
M: Perfect! Please add on an order of onion rings.
    Text 8
M: Maria. Can you tell us about your plans for the future?
W: Well, I’ve been considering taking a year out after I graduate. You know, maybe travel around the world and visit some different countries,
M: What do you hope to gain from traveling?
W: I’ve always been interested in seeing different places, and experiencing different cultures, so it will give me a chance to experience these things at first hand rather than read about them in a book. But I also think that the experience I gain will help me find a good job when I come back,
M: Why do you think so?
W: Well, the way I see it, a modern business environment is changing. Therefore, to be successful in one’s life, it is important to be able to accept changes.
    M: What do you mean?
W: I mean that you should be willing to change your attitudes, and even working habits to suit the ever-- changing environment. And if you’ve spent some time traveling, it means that you have to get used to different ideas and ways of doing things,
    M: Er... It sounds reasonable.
W: I also believe that traveling will teach me to be independent, as well as to value other people.
M: Why do you believe traveling will help you to value other people?
W:As you know, when you’re traveling you can’t get help from your family, so you have to depend on your friends, or even turn to unknown people.
    M: Oh, I see. You’re right, Maria.
    Text 9
M: Before the end of this semester, you’re supposed to hand in your research report. I will writhe the deadlines on the blackboard. First of all, you have to do some discussions, and that’s due by January 31st, which is two weeks away,
W: Do we have to have our outline by then?
M: No, your outline is due to on February 7th, which is a week later,
W: When do we have to be doing the research?
M: That should be done over a month, basically from February to March.
W: And what about the writing?
M:Well, you can’t really get going on your writing until you’ve finished the research, so that’s really from March to May, with the due date on the 21st. Any more questions?
    Text 10
In ancient times, the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as a part of the process of testing candidate for the doctor’s degree.
Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not know until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by manages, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act as machines.
