For years, going home for holidays had been bittersweet. My mom worked hard to make me feel loved. But it was painful for me because her house was filled with stuff. There were clothes bought but never worn, handicraft (手工艺品) that she started with good intentions but never finished, boxes packed years ago but never open, and plenty of new items in their original packaging carelessly purchased but never used. Seeing the stuff reminded my mom of a time when shopping was her behavior for coping with loneliness after losing loved ones.
I didn't fully understand the extent to which my mom was suffering until this week, when I saw piles of clothes on her bed. There was so much stuff that she had little space to sleep every night. I couldn't understand the way in which my mom lived until she told me she was punishing herself by sleeping with them. I felt ashamed at that moment. If I had lived with her, she might have recovered from the painful experience. I couldn't describe the feeling I had. I gently explained to her that punishing herself was only to make things worse, and that everybody deserves a place to sleep in peace, no matter what mistakes they've made. I suggested that she move all the piles of stuff in her bedroom to another room in order to leave her room comfortable to sleep in.
With patience I helped her go through some of the piles and move them upstairs. But for the rest of the week I was there, she was in a better mood and was so excited about going through the rest of the house to finally deal with her stuff. The items brought painful memories as we inspected and moved them, but I kept reminding her that getting rid of them would allow her to move on.
24. What made the author very upset?
A. Her mom’s messy house.
B. Her mom’s losing loved ones.
C. Her mom’s working hard for her.
D. Her mom’s never wearing new clothes.
25. What can best describe the author’s feeling when hearing her mom’s words in Paragraph 2?
A. Guilty. B. Excited. C. Shocked D. Confused.
26. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The mom has a very low income.
B. The mom lived alone for many years.
C. The author refused to understand her mom.
D. The author didn’t get on well with her mom.
27. Which of the following may the author agree with?
A. Whatever choice you make makes you.
B. Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.
C. Put past behind you before you move on.
D. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
C
Touch is perhaps our closest friend among the senses. When you hold or brush against an object, specialized skin cells give a wealth of information, such as shape, size, and weight. Yet when you stop touching that object, much of that information seems to disappear rather quickly. After a few days, you may only be able to bring an unclear impression to the mind. It would seem then that the sense of touch is largely useful in the moment, and not much after that.
Over the decades, there has been surprisingly little research to test that. Yet a common viewpoint is that the sense of touch is, by far, of limited use over the long term, and especially when compared to the visual system. However, a new study provides the strongest challenge yet to that viewpoint. The finding is that the sense of touch creates memories that are far more complex and long-lasting than previously thought.
The finding that touch creates memories of how an unseen object should look—an almost magical ability —remains to be fully explained. However, studies have found that touch not only activates the somatosensory cortex(体感皮层), but can also activate regions that are involved in processing visual signals. Thus, it could be that when you touch an unseen object, your brain forms an image of its probable appearance. This may be especially likely when that object is similar to a familiar item that you have come into contact with before. When you do see that object for the first time, you can recognize it.
Typically, the sense of touch is so common, and its effects are seemingly temporary. That is why it is often taken for granted. We now know that its effects exist in the brain long after the sensory experience ends, and often without our being directly aware of it.Surprisingly, large amounts of information are preserved as well. A single touch has a far greater influence on the mind than one might have ever imagined --which makes the act of doing so all the more powerful, so people should explore and take advantage of it.
28.What do most people probably think of the sense of touch?
A. It can create complex memories.
B. It is useful for a short period of time.
C. It will leave a long-lasting impression.
D. It is more useful than the visual system.
29.How is the second paragraph organized?
A. By listing data. B. By giving examples.
C. By giving definitions. D. By making a comparison.
30.What will happen when you touch an unseen object?
A. You will describe it clearly.
B. You will know an object similar to it.
C. You will tell what it is immediately.
D. You will get an idea of its possible appearance.
31.What does the text suggest people do about the sense of touch?
A. Keep it in memory. B. Take it for granted.
C. Make good use of it. D. Pay no attention to it.
D
In today's rapidly changing workplace and emerging gig economy(零工经济), each year a growing number of top employers --from Google to IBM--are desperately trying to employ graduates to fill open positions.Though colleges contribute millions of smart graduates to the market each year, employers still find it hard to employ the persons meeting their requirements. According to a recent Brookings' study, we're facing an estimated 55 million job openings by 2020 without the workforce to fill them.
There is clearly a disconnect between what schools are offering and what employers need, and the skills gap continues to grow as a result. To fix this, schools need to deliver more career pathways to more students with the aid of network technology, at an earlier age.
All students --whether they plan to continue their education after high school graduation or not --should begin exploring pathways and developing the skills needed for in-demand careers during middle and high school.
Along with the expansion of career education to more students,we need to reconsider how to deliver it most effectively. It is not economically viable, or necessary, to build large training centers focused on specific career pathways in each school district. Instead, we can develop a national infrastructure(基础设施)at a lower price that enables every high school student to have access to career training through online learning and local or regional training opportunities. Thanks to new technologies, students are able to learn technical skills online, from anywhere. For example, we can provide students with exposure to industry experts through live teaching sessions, and use virtual reality to offer 3D anatomy(解剖) and physiology tools to aid in health care education.
As the workforce continues to develop, it's up to educators to prepare students for it. By applying education technology to a national infrastructure, more students will have a head start to succeed in a rewarding career. And more employers will find employees with the skills they need. For the sake of students and the national economy, it's time for career education to catch up with the demands of today's workforce.
32.What phenomenon is described in the first paragraph?
A. A variety of jobs have disappeared in the business world.
B. Gig economy has become a new trend in today's business.
C. Graduates are desperately eager to work for big companies.
D. Schools fail to keep pace with workforce demands.
33.What are the schools advised to do according to the text?
A. To encourage more students to go to college.
B. To improve students' academic performance.
C. To raise students' awareness of job security.
D. To expand career education at secondary education stage.
34.What does the underlined word“viable”in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Reliable. B. Practicable. C. Profitable. D. Comparable.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.National Infrastructure Vital to Economic Growth
B.Online Learning Academically Beneficial to Students
C.Education Technology Key to Career Readiness
D.College Education Fundamental to Success
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It may not be easy. But we all have to accept change and move on. The following are some good reasons.
Everything changes, whether you accept it or not. 36 And don’t forget that however good or bad a situation is now, it will change. So accept it, and realize that change happens for a reason. It won't always be easy at first, but in the end it will be worth it.
There's plenty of life left to be lived. Honestly, it' s never too late to live a day that makes you proud. 37 You can simply start, and stop wherever you want. You can change or stay the same. You can make the best or the worst of today. It's up to you, so make the best of it.
The past never changes. You can spend hours, days, weeks, months, or even years sitting alone in a dark room, over-thinking a situation from the past, trying to put the pieces together and thinking what could have or should have happened. 38 So you just leave the pieces in the dark and walk out of the front door into the sunlight to get some today's fresh air.
Moving on creates positive changes. You may blame everyone else and think, “Poor me! Why do all these bad things keep happening to me?” 39 And this is good news, because it means only you can have the power to change things, or change the way you think about things.
40 Nobody gets through life without challenges, just as nobody gets through life without losing someone they love, or something they need. But it is these experiences that make us stronger and finally move us toward future chances. Accept these chances and be ready to experience something or meet someone that just might change your life forever.
A. There' s no perfect time.
B. But yesterday is history.
C. Feel things you've never felt before.
D. You become your own worst enemy.
E. New chances are out there waiting for you.
F. But what those bad things have in common is YOU.
G. If nothing ever changed, there would be no sunrise the next morning.
