I hadn’t been aware of the refugee难民disaster until I actually got to Greece

I took over as manager of the Oinofyta camp. This work is like being a mother. I’ve learned that love is a choice. And I realized that I had met my goal—which was to take care of them and show them that they were loved. That they’re cared about, not forgotten. I know that all of the Greek islands are overcrowded. I have a camp that within three or four days could serve 500 people.

I’ve been able to introduce many of the Greek people here to the refugees. Most of us want to provide for ourselves. When your life is spent getting handouts救济品from everyone all day, you lose your dignity尊严. I had this wild idea that it would be great to start a business, sewing bags from leftover tent material. I tell you, those workers were the happiest people in camp because they had a purpose. We have companies and purchasers in America who want to buy these bags now.

My father was an officer and my husband was in the US Coast Guard, so every two years, our family moved. Part of my life has been learning to say goodbye, which has been one of the harder things here at the camp: the constant cycle of volunteers and residents. I was so happy for them when they got their family reunion, and so sad because I knew that there is little possibility of me being able to ever see them again.

My own kids are all asking the same question now: “Mom, when are you coming home?” I don’t know. I hope that my legacy here is that the people that I have touched, the refugees or the Greek people, will always remember that I cared about them, that they were special and important and that they were worthy of that care.

    24. What did the author think of her job when she came to Greece?

    A. Difficult.   B. Forgettable.   C. Meaningful.    D. Tiring.

    25. Why did the author set up a business?

    A. The bags made from tent material are in great need.

    B. Most of workers in her camp didn’t have any purposes.

    C. Much leftover tent material was thrown away and wasted.

    D. She wants workers to have dignity and live by themselves.

    26. Why was the author unhappy when she saw residents get family reunion?

    A. It’s hard for her to see them again.   B. There were fewer residents.

    C. Her camp changed too quickly.    D. There were fewer volunteers.

    27. Which of the following best explains “legacy” underlined in the last paragraph?

    A. The thing she will throw.     B. The thing she will borrow.

    C. The thing she will lend.      D. The thing she will leave.

    C

Plays are an important part of British culture. The West End theatre district in London is the best place to watch a professional play, but acting also takes place in every school and village hall across the country.

There are over 2,500 non- professional drama groups in the UK today and they are an active part of community life. people from all walks of life take on acting roles in addition to their regular jobs. They do it for fun, for the love of acting and as a way to meet new people.

Not everyone in a drama club is a skilled actor, but enthusiasm is considered to be more important than talent. Friends, family members and neighbours enjoy getting together to watch the final performance and telling the people they know to "break a leg(走运)". It's a great way of bringing communities together. Also, in many rural parts of Britain, non-professional theatre is the only chance people have to see plays for miles around.

Most people get a taste for acting at school. Every school puts on a play at least once per year, usually at Christmas, and parents love coming to watch their children perform. Ask any British person and they're sure to have happy memories of being in their school's Christmas play, whether they played the role of Mary or Joseph or perhaps even a sheep or a donkey.

Another Christmas theatre tradition is the pantomime(舞剧). Pantomimes are a type of musical comedy for families .the audience is encouraged to participate in the performancesinging along with the music and shouting to the actors. Pantomimes are really fun to watch, especially for children.

British people love going to the theatre, professional or not, and many of them also enjoy performing. If you have the chance, go and see a play in the UK.

    28. What matters most for an actor in a drama club, according to the article?

    A. Talent.  B. Professional training.   C. Enthusiasm   D. Support from family

    29. According to the article, what is special about pantomimes?

    A. The audience is encouraged to join in the performance.

    B. The audience is allowed to play some small roles in them.

    C. All the performers are professional child actors.

    D. The musical comedy is always about family life.

    30. What do we know about most Britain people?

    A. They learn how to be a professional actor in school.

    B. They often participated in performance when in school.

    C. They consider acting to be their regular jobs.

    D. They watch plays in the West End theatre district in London.

    31. What is the best title for the text?

    A. The reasons why British people love plays  B.The rules for drama lovers to follow in the UK

    D

Howie Choset thinks snakes are great — not snakes, really, but their ways of moving. Howie Choset, 37 years old, is a professor at Carnegie Mellow University, where he has been years in developing robots that imitate snake-like movements. Why? He sees a future for these snake-like robots in the work of saving lives.

These robots are built from very light materials and can carry cameras and other electronic sensors. Small electric motors, such as those used in model airplanes, help them move smoothly. Their size is similar to or smaller than a human arm.

Choset’s hope is for these robots to be used in search and rescue operations after natural disasters or other emergencies. They must be controlled by a human operator using a joystick, like with a video game. The robots have the ability to know which direction is upwards, but much of their usefulness would depend on humans controlling them. Even then, these robots would be better than the current methods and equipment, most of which are just cameras on long poles.

Sam Stover is the manager of a search team with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He holds the opinion that robots like these have been needed for a long time. Dogs are used effectively in search and rescue, but they are limited to places that humans can go. These robots would allow search teams to do something they’ve not been able to do before. “We needed them yesterday,” said Stover.

    32. What inspired Howie Choset to design the robot?

    A. Snakes’ senses.       B. Snakes’ eyes.

    C. Snakes’ movements.      D. Snakes’ appearance.

    33. What can we infer about the robots from paragraph 2 and 3?

    A. The robots can work independently.   B. The robots can move in a smooth way.

    C. The robots can climb long poles.    D. The robots can move injured people.

    34. What are the robots designed to do?

    A. Save people trapped after earthquake.   B. Search for specific animals.

    C. Carry cameras and electronic sensors.   D. Play video games with humans.

    35. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

    A. Entertainment.   B. Health.  C. Science.   D. Education.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

The struggle begins in high school, sometimes earlier. Deadlines, and lots of them, start to pile up. At college, the pressure sometimes leads to last-minute rush and unsatisfactory work. At work, failing to meet deadlines can easily get you fired.    36   Here are a few best practices.

    Assign deadlines to what matters.

If the task isn't of high importance, don't set a specific deadline. In this way, you are able to keep it on your radar for a while without feeling pressured.   37   This will provide just enough pressure to ensure you get it done.

      38

Set a personal deadline for yourself a day or two before the actual deadline.   39   If you're working with a group of people, add in even more time to account for potential follow-ups and the need for approvals.

    Keep communicating

40   This means letting others know when something is taking longer than expected, when a delivery didn't come in, when a client is not providing the necessary information, etc. Although it may feel embarrassing to admit that something is not on schedule, being honest is much better for relieving your stress

    A. Finish your project as early as possible.

    B. Plan for flexible hours in advance.

    C. In this way, you'll never have to stay up late and feel stressed.

    D. But if an activity is quite important, set a deadline immediately.

    E. Whenever you feel difficult to finish work on time, communicate.

    F. So if anything takes longer than expected, you can still hand it in on time.

    G. But handled properly, deadlines can actually improve productivity.

    Dear Peter,

I would like to know if I could ask for one day’s leave on February 8th, this Wednesday.

This morning I received a telephone call from my dentist, urging me to go to him for immediate treatment of my teeth. My toothache is so serious that I can’t sleep well during the past week. The situation could worsen.

As for the classes I will miss, I think I can make up for them in the evening at home. If possible, could you please send me the learning materials used in class? I apologize for the inconvenience that my absence may cause.

Thank you for your consideration and I’m grateful for your generous care and help.

    Yours,
