Brandon Olsen and Tylor Fritz of Hometown Sanitation (公共卫生) left gifts for three sisters who waved to them each Thursday after learning that one of them, 3-year-old Rose, had been fighting cancer.

The men also gave their parents free garbage service for one year.

“When they did that, it was a few weeks before the diagnosis (诊断) when every day just felt so impossible,” said Rose's mother, Angie Evenson, of Blue Earth, Minnesota. “Nothing in reality changes Rose’s diagnosis. But what they did makes us feel we are truly not alone in this fight.”

With binoculars (双筒望远镜) in hand, Rose and her two sisters, Grace, 5 and Sophia, 2 sat by the window and waved at their garbage men, Olsen and Fritz, as they drove by on their weekly route.

Olsen, 29, and Fritz, 24, told ABC News that the girl’s smiling faces are what they look forward to while working. They even left Halloween candy for the girls this year to show their appreciation. They hope that more and more people can understand and support their work.

But weeks later, Evenson wrote Olsen and Fritz a note explaining that little Rose wouldn’t be able to wave to them for a while since she'd be undergoing chemotherapy (化疗). Rose had been diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney cancer in September.

“As a father of three, it changed my outlook on things,” Olsen said. “It opened my eyes…you don’t know what someone else is going through.”

Fritz said he cried when he read the note. “I got to the chemo part and there were tears running down my face,” he recalled. “I don’t have any children of my own, but I can imagine if someone very close to me is diagnosed as cancer, I’ll be heartbroken.”

“Rose is being treated at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She will miss a few more Thursdays, when she can wave to her garbage men, but her chemo sessions will be switched to Mondays soon and she’ll be back by the window early next year. I have confidence in Rose’s recovery.” her mother said.

4How did the garbage men help Rose’s family?

AThey collected the garbage for free.        BThey took the sick girl to hospital regularly.

CThey looked after Rose in turn.            DThey offered money to help cure Rose.

5What can we learn about the garbage men?

AThey made the family famous.             BThey gave Angie Evenson a good lesson.

CThey encouraged the family.             DThey doubted about the doctor’s diagnosis.

6What do the garbage men wish for in terms of the girls’ smiling faces?

APeople’s appreciation for their work.     BThe girls’ family’s caring more for their children.

CGood friendship with the young girls.   DMaking more efforts to do their work well.

7What can we infer from the passage?

AOlsen has three sons.             BEvenson is optimistic about Rose’s condition.

CFritz has not got married.          DFritz is faced with a serious disease.

People like to post their selfies(自拍照) on social media. To know more about it, scientists at Syracuse University in New York recently did a research and came up with some surprising findings.

People who post selfies and use editing software to make themselves look better show behavior connected to narcissism(自恋), the researchers said. Makana Chock, a professor from Syracuse University, said because social media is mostly used by people to share unimportant information about their lives, it is a good place for people to “work towards satisfying their own vanity.” Those “likes” under their Facebook selfies make them feel good.

Besides, people who post group selfies show a need for popularity and a need to belong to a group, the research found. Some people feel “peer(同伴) pressure” to post selfies and some follow the popular belief that if there is no picture of an event or experience, it did not really happen. “Anyway, it shouldn’t be seen as negative. People get sense of satisfaction especially when they get likes. And it does no harm,” Chock said.

Other findings from the study include: There are no major differences on how often men and women post selfies and how often they use editing software. But men who post selfies showed more of a need to be seen as popular than women who posted selfies.

Chock said posting selfies on social media is not all that different from what people have done for many years. On trips and special events, our parents and grandparents used cameras instead of phones to take photos. They would bring back photos to show friends and family. You had no choice but to look at them. You probably commented about how nice everyone in the photos looked, especially children and the person showing the photos. They were happy to hear your comments. That was the old way of “clicking like”. On social media, however, people can decide not to look at photos --- even if they click “like”.

    28. What is the research mainly about?

    A. The ways of making people look better in selfies.

    B. The reasons for people posting selfies on social media.

    C. The differences between men and women in posting selfies.

    D. The connections between posting selfies and mental health.

    29. What does the word “vanity” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A. A deep desire to know about something. B. Too much pride in one’s own appearance.

C.A special need to be more popular.     D. Strong determination to improve oneself.

    30. What is Chock’s attitude towards selfie posting?

    A. Ambiguous.    B. Cautious.     C.Supportive.     D. Disapproving.

    31. From the last paragraph, we know that the older generations showed their photos to friends and family ______.

    A. to share good moments               B. to show off their cameras

    C. to improve relationships             D. to win praise from viewers

    D

It used to be mostly the army that used small, unpiloted aircraft, called “drones”. The little planes were very costly. But as they have dropped in price more people have begun to use them.

The fast rate of development of computer technology, image sensing equipment, satellite navigation and smart phones has led to lower-priced drones. Researchers and developers have learned how to build smaller and less costly drones. Nowadays, moviemakers are using drones to film from the sky. Historians use them when they explore ancient buildings. Rescue workers use them to look for people. And now farmers are also using them to watch over their crops.

Romain Faroux is a French businessman, whose father was a farmer. He believed drones could help farmers. He has helped create a company which has developed a small drone that could be controlled by people on the ground. It’s called “Agridrone”. It uses a special sensor to examine crops. The technology used on the drone is similar to that used on a smartphone -- except it has wings. A computer program directs the drone to fly over the crops. The sensor on the drone records four different-colored “bands” of sunlight that are reflected off the crops.

Jean-Baptiste Bruggeman is another farmer in France who is using a drone. He says the drone flies over his crops at different times of the season and provides a lot of information about his crops. The pictures taken by the drone show him the exact amount of fertilizer the crops need. It also shows exactly where the fertilizer is needed.

Romain Faroux says farmers use information provided by the Agridrone to place fertilizer only in areas where it is needed. This saves money and reduces pollution. Before they used the drones, farmers would put the same amount of fertilizer everywhere. Drones also save time because farmers can examine up to three hectares (英亩) in about a minute.

    32. Why do rescue workers and farmers begin to use drones?

A.Because the technology has been developed.    B. Because they are affordable now.

    C. Because they can save people a lot of time.     D. Because their sizes have become smaller.

    33. What is the sensor on the drone mainly used for?

    A. Helping the sunlight shine on the crops.

    B. Directing the wings to fly over the crops.

    C. Examining the different colors of the crops.

    D. Recording the sunlight “bands” reflected off the crops.

    34. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 probably refer to?

    A. A smartphone.      B. A drone.      C. A sensor.          D. A band.

    35. What is the main idea of the text?

    A. Crops will be harvested by drones soon.

    B. Drones will be widely used in different fields.

    C. Farmers develop special drones for their crops.

    D. French farmers use drones to examine their crops.

    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

“The calm before the storm” is a very familiar expression. It is usually used to describe a peaceful period just before a very stressful situation or a tense argument.    36     They noted that before certain storms the seas would seem to become calm and the winds would drop.

But why is it often so calm before a storm?    37     According to US website HowStuffWorks, a calm period occurs because many storms, tornadoes and hurricanes draw in all the warm and damp air from the surrounding area. As this air rises into the storm clouds, it cools and acts as “ fuel for the storm ,like petrol in a car. “

Once the storm has taken all the energy it can from the air, it is pushed out from the top of the storm clouds and falls back down to ground level.    38     So once it covers an area, it causes a calm period before the storm.

39     First count how many seconds there are between a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder, roughly three seconds equal one kilometer. A good judgement is that if your count is below 30 seconds, you should seek shelter straight away.

However, due to the complexity of storm system ,calm doesn't always go first. So, your best bet is to keep yourself updated with weather reports for any predictions regarding a coming storm in your area.     40

    A. Science has given us the answer.

    B. There is no definite answer to the question.

    C. Weather reports sometimes cannot be trusted.

    D. British sailors coined the phrase in the late l600s.

    E. As the air declines, it becomes warm and dry, which is stable.

    F. The Weather Network has a tip for working out how far away a storm is.

    G. That's the most reliable way to predict the next display of nature's temper.
