It was 1968, and my husband and I had just moved to California from Texas. We’d sold our furniture to make the move and needed to replace everything – and quickly.
I came up with the idea of being a game show contestant. I watched every program and at last settled on ABC’s Temptation.
I said to my husband, “I’m going to be on a game show and win some prizes, maybe even a color TV!”
He laughed and said, “While you’re at it, why not win a vacation?”
At the Palace, which was packed, my hopes began to fade when I learned that potential contestants had to set up an interview months in advance. I slid down in my seat to watch the taping, determined to leave as soon as I could.
Between tapings, an announcer told jokes to keep the audience lively. After one part, he must have run out of jokes because he peered into the crowd and asked, “How is everybody? Anyone have any problems?”
Seeing my chance, I jumped up and said, “Yes, I have a problem!”
Everyone turned to stare at me. The house lights came up. I said, “I came all the way from Texas to be on this show, and I’m just not seeing how it’s gonna happen.”
A man with a headset who turned out to be the director waved his hand at me. “Come on up here,” he said. Taking me aside, he said I was the kind of contestant the show wanted, and he invited me back for the next taping.
I was nervous, but I was the big winner after five rounds and was rushed to change for another taping. That time I won a total of almost $16,000 worth of goods—a large sum in 1968.
We furnished our new house with my winnings, which did include a color TV and a vacation.

Daniel came to school every day in torn shoes that were too small for him. He had cut holes where his big toes could spill out and not hurt so much. He was embarrassed.
Before Daniel was measured for new shoes, he was withdrawn and quiet. Kids like Daniel have very low expectations. They learn not to ask even for their most basic needs to be met because they don’t want to be disappointed.
Shoes That Fit provides new shoes to children in need, like Daniel, so they can attend school in comfort and with dignity, better prepared to learn and play. And this is what sets Shoes That Fit apart from similar organizations. Each child is measured to ensure the best fit possible. Then that child receives a brand new pair of shoes. And these are athletic shoes, so not only are they the proud receivers of new shoes, but they can participate in gym and after-school sports.
School staff report that children who receive new shoes through the Shoes That Fit program attend school more often with fewer behavioral problems. They participate more in physical activities and interact more with their peers.
Sandy, the headmaster of Daniel’s school, has seen that a happy child can concentrate on school. They are calmer, more relaxed, not as stressed out. Her school has high expectations for the success of all of their students and the staff there believe that this solid foundation must be built in elementary school. But it’s hard to learn when all you feel is shame.
For Daniel, those shoes made all the difference. He was comfortable and he didn’t have to worry – he felt normal. Now he was happy and interacting with the other kids. Because now he was just like them.

In the 1950s, governments in Europe tried to ban and discourage women from wearing a new controversial swimsuit: the Bikini. Now, it’s happening again, but with burkinis(比基尼)– the latest front in a long Western war over what women may wear in public spaces shared with men, especially those by the water that lend themselves to states of undress.
Modern swimwear began in the mid-19th century, when American women’s rights advocate Amelia Bloomer began promoting a style of clothing then known as “Turkish Dress,” which can let women move more easily.
Though its pioneers were Bloomer’s friends, the dress quickly became known, jokingly, as a bloomer. And it was considered anything but stylish as the women promoting it were identified with reform, not fashion. Considered as both ugly and dangerous, the bloomer costume was ridiculed into extinction in just a few years.
Yet no sooner had the name retired than it reappeared, as bathing clothes, which afforded women more freedom. By the 1870s, the long sleeves of the bathing dress had been cut down to short, capped ones and the bathing dresses had become much shorter.
By the end of that decade, fashionable dress for women was heavily influenced by men’s styles. On the beach itself, a one – piece bathing garment, often sleeveless had become a fashionable item for beachwear by the 1920s. And we eventually began to use the terms “swimsuit” and “bathing suit”
By the late 1940s fashion stepped ahead of function when the bikini was introduced. No longer serving the function of swimming, the bikini was purely fashion.
Now it is the burkini, intended to let Muslim women who follow religious dress codes enjoy the beach, that is intended to open the world up to these women much as the Bloomer – like bathing costume did for Western women more than a century and a half ago.
A suit that closes off the body can, over time, help open the world.
12.What does the underlined word “those” in Paragraph refer to?
    A.Spaces. B.Women. C.Governments. D.Burkinis.
13.Which is the right order according to the time they appeared in history?
A.Bathing suit – bloomer- burkini- bikini.
    B.Bikini- burkini- Turkish Dress- swimsuit.
C.Turkish Dress – bathing suit - bikini- burkini.
D.Bikini- Turkish Dress - bathing suit – burkini.
14.What can we learn about a bloomer?
A.It was laughed at by people. B.It is a product of the fashion
C.Its designer was Amelia Bloomer. D.It probably appeared in the 1950s.
15.What does the author want to tell us in the text?
    A.Swimwear stands for freedom.
    B.The brief history of swimwear.
    C.The origin of modern swimwear.
D.Swimwear is a tool to fight for equality.

    Ways to Reduce Plastic Waste
Plastic is found in almost everything these days. Your food is packaged in it. Your car, phone and computer are made from it. While most plastics are considered as recyclable, the reality is that they're “downcycled.” 16.
    Use matches.
If you need to light a candle, build a campfire or start a fire for any other reason, choose matches over plastic lighters. 17. If you can’t bear to part with your lighter, pick up a refillable metal one to help cut down on waste.
    Just say no to straws.
One of the easiest ways to keep plastic out of the landfill is to refuse plastic straws. 18. Can’t fathom giving up the convenience of straws? Purchase a reusable stainless steel or glass drinking straw. Restaurants are less likely to bring you a plastic one if they see that you’ve brought your own.
    19.
About 1 million plastic bags are used every minute, and a single plastic bag can take 1,000 years to break down. If you’re already bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, you’re on the right track. However, if you’re still using plastic produce bags, it’s time to make a change.
    Skip the frozen foods section.
    20. While giving up frozen food can be difficult, there are many benefits. You’ll be eating fewer processed foods and avoiding the chemicals in their plastic packaging.

    A.Use reusable produce bags.
B.Develop new ways to deal with plastic.
C.Then how can we recycle plastic correctly?
D.Simply inform your waiter or waitress that you don’t need one.
E.Frozen foods offer both convenience and plenty of plastic packaging.
F.These cheap plastic lighters have even been found in dead birds’ stomachs.
G.Luckily, there are simple steps to help decrease the amount of plastic waste.

    42.答案:where
定语从句中缺少状语,先行词是the Perryville Community Park,故填where。
    43.答案:was owned
    44.答案:with
    46.答案:Interestingly
    50.答案:were

One possible version:
    Dear editor,
I am Li Hua, a middle school student. I’m writing to say some bad behaviour toward the convenient shared bikes in our city.
However, bad things do happen to shared bikes every day. Some people cause damage to the bikes on purpose, and some even use their own locks. All these bring great trouble to other users.
To improve this situation, I think we should educate people to protect our public services. And bike-sharing companies also need to do something. For example, they should punish those who damage the bike. What’s more, because people use their real name to register as a user, it’s a good way to connect their personal credit with their behavior.
    Best wishes.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
