Going to college was not optional; In my family, it was just another step toward the American dream.
As soon as I graduated, I enrolled in the English Department of Colorado State University. I went on to earn two scholarships, and membership in the National Honor Society. I truly believed the hard work was worth it.
It wasn’t until a few months ago that I realized how clueless I was. I had been combing through the classifieds (分类广告) when my eyes fell upon my dream job. “National College Magazine looking for writers.”
Thrilled, I spent the weekend composing a resume. Needless to say, I was stunned when the interviewer barely took one glance before throwing it aside.
    “No experience,” he said flatly.
I felt like screaming, “What do you mean, no experience? Look at these grades.”
I was left to absorb the shock of rejection, thinking that nobody ever told me that a 4.0 student would be turned down for a job.
Didn’t all of my hard work count for anything?
I see plenty of demands for two years of experience at a print publication, but none requiring extensive knowledge of how to write academic papers. Yet 95% of my energy in school went toward the latter, leaving me little time to devote to anything else. If career preparation is supposed to be the point of college, then why isn’t it the focus?
Has a college degree just become another societal status symbol like fancy cars or designer clothes?
Given my experience, I feel that a college degree would be a lot more valuable if students were required to get some outside experience to supplement their in-class knowledge. Instead of requiring four science classes, why not three science classes and an internship?
In my college career, I took one class that taught me how to write and submit essays for publication. This ever-so-brief taste of the real world was like holding an ice cream sundae (圣代) in front of a child and only giving her a small bite.
Well, I’m a big girl. I want my college education – the education I’m paying for – to include everything.

    26. What does the underlined sentence in the second-to-last paragraph imply? (句意猜测)

They say that good literature is “timeless”. But perhaps they should also say “nameless”.
In May 2018, the Chinese literary magazine Newriting (《鲤》) started a project called “Anonymous (匿名的) Writing”, collecting short stories submitted by famous writers as well as by new writers. What’s different about the project is that the stories were published without the writers’ names, and were then presented to a judging panel (评审团) of professional writers to select the best work. The panel judged only on the basis of the writing itself.
The winning story was announced on Dec 15. It was the work of Zheng Zhi, a 31-year-old writer who had never taken part in a writing competition before. However, he managed to defeat works later known to be from the hands of famous writers such as Yan Lianke and Ma Boyong.
“People today love celebrities– the names they’re familiar with,” Zhang Yueran, the founder and chief editor of Newriting, said at the award ceremony. “This was why we decided to hide the names in this project, freeing people from whatever distraction that comes with a name and allowing them to focus only on the value of the writing.”
In fact, history is full of “nameless” literary works. The best example in Chinese literature is perhaps The Book of Poetry (《诗经》), which consists of ancient folk tales by no specific authors, but is considered to be a classic. In Western literature, the famous 1847 novel Jane Eyre by UK writer Charlotte Bronte was actually first published under the pen name “Currer Bell”. No one knew who “he” or “she” was, but that didn’t stop the novel from becoming an international sensation (轰动).
Perhaps all literature should be “nameless”. Such a rule would allow writers to compete in the fairest way. It might also free famous writers from imprisonment (禁锢) by a style that they have established and allow them to find a new one. And we readers could enjoy writing in a pure way, with everything unnecessary like names and titles – publicity maneuvers (宣传策略) – stripped (剥离) away to leave only literature itself.
    28. What was special about the project started by Newriting? (细节理解)
    A. It was only open to new writers.
    B. It selected the best short stories.
    C. It judged works without knowledge of the writers.
    D. The members of its judging panel were all ordinary readers.
    29. Why did the founder start the project? (细节理解)
    A. He wanted new writers to become better known.
    B. He wanted to create a fair writing competition.
    C. He wanted people to care about the writing itself.
    D. He aimed to compare new writers with famous ones.
    30. What is the purpose of Paragraph 5? (段落大意)
    A. To show that there are many good “nameless” works in history.
    B. To show the similarities between literary works in the East and West.
    C. To show that “nameless” works can enjoy popularity for a long time.
    D. To explain how to make “nameless” works well known.
    31. What does the writer think of the “nameless” rule? (推测题)
    A. It will create greater competition among writers.
    B. Famous writers may become free to write in different styles.
    C. It will be difficult for readers to choose the best works.
    D. New writers will become discouraged because they will never become known.

New traffic lights fitted with artificial intelligence (AI) could create safer roads and bring an end to rush hour jams.
“Smart” traffic lights will monitor speed and traffic jam, prioritize cyclists, buses and ambulances with green lights and use heat maps to analyse how passers-by and motorists are using the roads. Milton Keynes is set to be the first city to trial the £3 million project from September.
At present, traffic lights are not reactive to the vehicles around them and traffic monitoring is still done by police. However, with AI, traffic monitors can recognize different vehicles and individual road users and will be able to regulate traffic in no time. Cameras will also allow traffic lights to prioritize cyclists, buses or ambulances with green lights. The technology could also enable traffic lights to communicate with driverless cars around the corner and inform them if passers-by are crossing the road.
Vivacity Labs, which created the technology, said “The Milton Keynes project is the first step in
creating an intelligent traffic management system. That improves safety by influencing traffic movement as it happens, based on the type of traffic and monitoring the areas where it becomes congested (拥堵).”
Yang Lu, Chief Technology Officer at Vivacity Labs said, “There is very limited intelligence to the current management of urban roads. By introducing AI into the camera itself, Vivacity Labs has created a system that accurately identifies and reports road usage, reducing the potential for human error.”
“It also improves traffic today as it can be linked with existing management systems to keep road users, such as cyclists, safe by giving priority at lights, or change signs to direct traffic away from traffic jams. The project will help show the value of the data our device creates, giving us the basis to offer our system to cities across the world, ” Yang Lu added.
    32. Why is the intelligent traffic management system used? (细节理解)
    A. To create a greener environment.
    B. To let passers-by cross the street quickly.
    C. To improve safety and avoid congestion.
    D. To have police direct the traffic easily.
    33. What can we know about new traffic lights? (细节理解推断)
    A. They’re real-time. B. They’re complex.
    C. They limit the road usage. D. They accurately identify the cars' number.
    34. What is Yang Lu’s attitude to AI technology? (态度题)
    A. Doubtful.  B. Supportive. C. Uncaring. D. Negative.
    35. What is the best title for the passage? (主旨大意)
    A. No Traffic Jams at the Crossroads
    B. The Smart City of the Future
    C. The Driverless Car into the City
    D. Traffic Lights with Artificial Intelligence
